• She Tried Mountain Bik...
I was requested to make a video talking about bike commuting by mountain bike, so here it is! I'll be talking about some of the pros and cons of commuting by mtb, as well as the differences between mountain bike commuting and road bike commuting during my daily commute to work.
Let me know what you guys think as well in the comments! Is commuting by MTB better than a road bike or CX bike?

I guess it depends where you live and the terrain. I have friends who will travel 30 miles each way but it's all roads and streets. Also very hilly, so just can't beat a road bike for the speed. With the same effort used, a road bike will just be faster on the road I guess, letting you sleep in just a bit more :)

@glibsonoran

@@calebdavenport1231 You can always buy semi-slick tires for your mountain bike. They have a road-type tread in the center and knobs on the outside which only engage when you're turning. They'll last about as long as a road tire when used on pavement, but they're wider than road tires so they run at a lower pressure and can float on loose and sandy soil and grip better on turns in the dirt.

After commuting for years, I found MTB commuting was not only more enjoyable but way safer.I can't tell you how many times I had to make a quick bunny hop onto a curb, or pull off onto the shoulder to save my A** due to poor drivers, or terrible street conditions. The only thing that is missing on modern bikes with flat bars is the bar ends. Sure the flatbars now are super wide, almost to wide for riding in the city and there for give a more precise and fast steering when paired with short stem, but when you want to push all you have holding onto something vertically like bar ends is somehow giving you the feel that you can push harder than holding onto the flat bar itself. Am I the only one that feels like that?

I still use bar ends on my XC mtb with 680mm bars, Although I only use them to rest my hands on non-technical sections. I don't really feel I need them for leverage on modern handlebar widths.
@JimKJeffries
@JimKJeffries 4 года назад
I use them on a Cannondale m900, hardtail, gives extra leverage...only caution is be certain the bar is tight. I miss judged a shadow line at night, thought I was dropping about 1 foot, dropped more like 3. Landed hard on the front, the handle bar rotated, and my hands came right of as I ate it. If I was holding the bar, perhaps I wouldn't of endo.

I use an MTB for my urban commute here in the Philippines. I prefer this coz of the poor conditions of our main and secondary roads. Heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the city made me choose my mtb over a road bike due to the more upright positioning . With a road bike I might have difficulty maintaining forward eye contact to avoid vehicles and pedestrians. Majority who commute within the city to and from work prefer the MTB due to its more upright position and easy maneuvering in and out of traffic.

@Alien On a Bike On average commuting speed, perhaps they're comparable because the gear ranges are there, but the road bike is still going to be faster on pure tarmac. You're fortunate on your commute you can dodge a lot of traffic. I have to contend with a lot of cars & trucks on my commute. Other advantages of using mountain bike / hybrid bike that you did not touch on, is that being more upright tends to lead to improved visibility. Far easier to look and scan ahead, also turning your head is easier and less restrictive when looking over your shoulder for traffic when changing lanes or turning. Thanks for another great video.

Nice decent video! I own a 2018 Scott Aspect 940 Hardtail since April 2018. It's so much fun to ride. Decently fast MTB! One thing I discovered was when I switched the tires from the original KENDA I immediately felt the difference! The bike feels way lighter and faster. The original Kenda were very heavy (have more resistance). I switched to a diffrent set of KENDA tires with bigger square tread blocks. Generally a very realiable and trustworthy MTB! Thank you for sharing..

Late comment, but I want to add that MTB are great for commuting. It will become at par speed-wise if you use thick slick tyres - with that, you gain speed without giving away the control, stability and comfort of flat bar, suspension and wide tyres. And of course, overall you will have a bike that is more durable and give you more confidence while riding.

have you also considered converting to a rigid carbon fork to drop serious weight? It would still be more comfortable than a road bike

When you took off-road course to cut traffic, damn I think a lot of road cyclist going to envy. To increase MTB performance for commuting I suggest using large crankset gear (I use XT triple speed 48T). Change standard freehub with a very good one to increase efficiency. For smoother ride I always unlocked suspension except when steep climbing or sprinting off saddle.

@@TwoWheelCruise Just some news from home. Whitmer has extended the state of emergency for COVID-19 until next month...the GOP people in Lansing are taking her to court. Michigan politics as usual. I was in a BLM protest in Detroit several weeks ago...Trump sending federal cops to the 'D', as well as other cities nation-wide. I lived in Madison Heights before moving to SW Michigan. I used to ride out to Inkster. The Q Line runs down Woodward thru mid-town and downtown, which makes it a challenge for those of us who like urban street riding. The casinos are partially open, and Corktown is crazy busy as always! Detroit teachers are considering going on strike over the COVID-19 issue. Life and money is slowly coming back to the Cass Corridor. They have a dedicated bike lane, which is awesome for us, especially if you are a student at Wayne State University. Election coming up in November, and Trump is engaging in his usual foolery. Anyway, just some tidbits to share. When are you coming home to visit? Take care, you guys. Be safe, okay? Peace.

As someone in the DMV area I would say that DC can be more bikeable than the suburbs, and with the right bike you could definitely beat traffic. Little late to post this but it’s just my 2 cents lol

Another MTB advantage is fewer flats. Negative is fewer handlebar positions for hands. Love watching your commute. I took my bike to Tokyo but decided against riding back in '89. I did ride it in Chang Mai, up Doi Suthep to the King's Palace. Had planned to do Do Inthanon, highest paved road in Thailand, but it was more than I could handle from Chang Mai. Riding on the left was hard getting used to.

I suppose that depends on where you're driving. For example, for my daily ride to work (70K round trip) I switched to a CycloCross bike where I first rode an MTB. For a number of reasons. It's easier to pass heavy traffic in a city (and I have to drive through Brussels, Belgium) with a drop bar bike than with a wide flat bar handlebars. I do notice a considerable difference of 1 to 1.5 km/h between the two bikes. My MTB isn't the most modern either, maybe that has something to do with it. Your tires on an MTB wear out much faster, but you can of course fit adapted tires as well. I would personally recommend that you take what makes you feel good. For absolute beginners, nothing beats an MTB because of the comfort and security when steering. Once you ride a bit more, I would mainly look at the use and the route to choose with which I leave.
@Scottx125Productions
@Scottx125Productions 5 лет назад
True. However the real appeal of Cyclocross bikes/Gravel/Adventure is that it's as close as you can get to an all-round bike. And the reason I say that is due to the fact that Hybrid bikes whilst they give you slightly more control and can come with suspension, the afore mentioned bikes have a drop bar giving 3 grips, are slightly faster (and lighter) and some even come with suspension.

Feels more comfortable that's for sure. Gets tiring dragging that weight up hills though. Flat bars turn your elbows out, tenses your upper body and tend to lock your arms and transmit road shock to your body. You can put road tires on your mountain frame, I do that, but also went with a rigid fork after the first year commuting, I have a lot of hills to deal with.

I commute more often now in Los Angeles. Mountain bikes are a no go in traffic. Bars are too wide. I would have to add more time as they are slower as well. I do ride my mtb on the road to my nearest trail 8 miles away. I do use a wider tire on the commuter, a 28c, with lower pressure at 90psi. It's a change from my normal 25c tires at 100psi

I recently got a road bike to start commuting to work, having ridden MTB before, and it’s kinda nice that it’s light-ish and narrow (good on the train and in traffic) but I find the position sooo uncomfortable and the rim brakes suck which has resulted in me having a crash, and I don’t find I’m going much faster than anybody else. Switching the tyres did help a lot, it was horrible to begin with when the cheap tyres were on. Wish I had bought a hard tail tbh

Watching an old video. As a kid I was a BMX rider (for fun) then bought a Trek 4300 in 2004. Finally bought a new Motobecane hardtail mtb last year. Some day I'll probably buy a hybrid with solid forks and smoother tires. Living in rural Missouri you can go anywhere on a gravel road so for me a road bike makes zero since. I even took a guy that works for me on a 20 mile back road adventure, me on my mountain bike him on his gravel, and he had a blast. Can't wait to you see your latest mtb build.

I just upgraded my MTB with 26"x2.0 Marathon Plus Tour tires, I immediately noticed a difference in steering and balance which I will soon get used too. They may be heavier but the low rolling resistance has already proved to be faster as shown by my Strava results. Oh and I mostly use my MTB on tarmac and road so this was 1 of the reasons for my choice. Puncture resistance was the other (as you will know by 1 of your past videos).

Hell, I should return to my mountain bike commuter mentality. I was going for a road bike, but I don’t really care much for speed or efficiency. I’d rather get the upright riding position and versatility of a mountain bike. Besides, I can take a mountain bike on either road or trails and it’ll do adequately on roads, whereas a road bike will suck on singletrack
