Only just came across this video, sorry for late comments. Made my mouth water! When I lived in Spain Mercadona was my go-to supermarket. Absolutely love Spanish food.
Mil gracias por el video Stuart think it was in Gijon couple of weeks ago .there was a supermarket 🛒 there with a area with seats microwave and table utensils so you could eat some of the food 🍲 you bought. Also fresh food cooked to go.we left Coimbra to Porto .If you haven't been to Coimbra yet the old capital of Portugal 🇵🇹 I'm 💯 percent sure you and your good lady will love it .
Mercadona also has the best fresh gaspacho the one in plastic bottles. I used to love the old tetra pak ones but the new version is really tasty and actually hard to beat when making it on your own!
I found that veggies and fish are of great quality and good pricing. However eggs are rather poor quality... but most surprising, and a great idea .. the Mercadona supermarkets sell ready hard boiled eggs in 6, 10 packs etc..
@@harriettt9857 I live in Spain during the Finnish Winter. From my experience fresh eggs are being sold with a ''flexible'' sell by date... As for the hard boiled egg packs, it makes life easier for picnics 🤣.....
I'm finding all are created equal.😅 I have 3 Dias near me; the largest one has a kitchen where they prepare fresh and package... have to say pretty darn good.
That food is not for me - Crisp are full of trans fat, they are so un healthy, and a lot of the ready meals are full of chemicals, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, flavourings etc. If you eat a lot of this stuff it will make you sick.
Hi Stu, what a fantastic video tonight, we love the fried egg crisps from Mercadona, also love the Ham and Egg crisps from Carrefour, but we haven't tried the Migas and the garlic potatoes and will certainly be going down to Mercadona this Saturday to try them, also love the Rueda wine, cheers
I tried the ready meals in my first years here in Spain, but nowadays I'm cooking the dishes myself using the fresh ingredients available everywhere. Today I cooked a big pot of chili con carne, enough for 3 additional rations in the refrigerator, and tomorrow it's Hungarian goulash. With the recipe for Italian pizza from an Italian colleague, there is no need to buy any frozen pizza from the shelves or order one for delivery. The only thing I miss is the choice of bread and pastries from Germany, but vegetables, fruits, and meat are superior here. And with the Estrella Galicia, I found a very good replacement for German beers. Here in A Coruña, it may rain as much as in my hometown in Germany, but at least the rain is roughly 10°C warmer on average, and palm trees are growing here. All in all, Spain is a good place to live, I never regret having moved to Spain. By the way, I really liked your videos about Vigo and Pontevedra, the latter would be the best city to live here in Galicia in my opinion. Regarding the rain in Galicia, it's probably more compared to other regions in Spain, but in exchange, you have very green and lush vegetation, something you can really enjoy in the summertime. The only disadvantage I can name is the cold sea, swimming in the ocean, or just a few steps into the water at the beach is a challenge.
Tapas free with your drink depends where you are. Here in Murcia, no way. I'm not much of a fan of rice or migas as pre-prepared food but I do like Mercadona's salmorejo & gazpacho andaluz (in the bottle, not the tetra brick). Also popular here is the ensaladilla rusa - an essential component of the marinera, marinero and matrimonio.
Go out and show restaurants please, my husband and I loving your videos, we are learning a lot, may you speak more about the water issues and what are the areas to avoid? Thanks! 🎉❤ go for a real paella!
Autentico alioli..yemas de huevos. Aceite de oliva y ajos machacados add a little salt , mix it to create a creamy sauce, add the herbs when you serve the dish
On a side note....I know somebody who works in the local Mercadona and she told me that they throw away any pre-prepared food left over when the store closes. So, at least it's fresh......
About Spanish white wines, I'd add Fefiñanes and Txakoli to the Rueda and Albariño. In Catalonia, there are some very good white wines too. Will send you info later on when I manage to overcome this heat wave.
As an English native and teacher, my Spanish is very poor so i am extremely confused by the huge variety avalable in Spain.( I love this place, the people are amazing). Happy to see you are feeling better amigo.thx for the vid!
The food can be a bit confusing when you get here but it is very tasty. A good tip is if you're ever in a restaurant that has a bilingual menu study it a bit so you can see what everything is. A phrase book can help with this too. And then when the menu is just in Spanish, or there's no menu and the waiter is literally telling you what there is, you'll understand. Failing that have a look at what other people are eating and if you see something you like, ask what it is and order it!
Visiting my sister in Spain some time ago, security in Portsmuth did a search of the large load in my car. The security guard looked agog at the 48 tins of Heinz beans and 48 tins of Heinz spagetti hoops, not to mention the cheeses and various other comestibles. I had to explain that my sister often hosted her faddy grandaughter who would not eat the equivalent Spanish products. Personally, I found the Spanish products just as good while many things were better, cheaper and with more variety on offer. Now vanishing into the kitchen as you have made me hungry!
Adore boquerones, but you MUST drizzle olive oil and chopped garlic and flat leaf parsley. Never eat straight from the packet. Poor experience. Best with a nice country bread! OK. A challenge. Very popular with Madrid locals, “Minutejos”. Usually deep fried and crispy. Unfortunately very often the hairs are left on this delicacy of pigs ears! I wonder what you think?
Just watched the video, excellent, often wondered what some of the meals were so now I will try! Just to add our local Mercadona has started selling chicken and bechemal (sorry if spelt wrong) sauce pasties, excellent!
Fabulous Stu! Thx for the video..my family (w 2 picky kids) are not the type to go to bars or restaurants here in Valencia. Kebobs and pizza is how we eat out😂.but I will be going to the Mercadona down the street now and try some of the pre-made spanish dishes! 😊 thx
I found these crisps in Barcelona and expected nothing considering the 1€ price. loved them! Back in Germany I looked if I can get them here as well. I can! For 5€ per bag!
For me, the best flavour of Spanish crisps is Campesino (or as amusingly translated by a local Cádiz brand, Peasant)). Most supermarkets do it and so do Lays. Wash them down with a 30 cent can of Mercadona Clásica! Of course better beers are available but the cheap stuff isn't bad here either
Thanks Stu, the food looked delicious! I have yet to try the white gazpacho. I'm definitely be buying some from Mercadona. Also, l was not aware of those egg flavored chips so I'll try those too and the migas!
Just wonder about their own brand hacendado in Sweden we get the same thing 3 major supermarket chains branding their own products but they dont do it to nearly the same extent compared with mercadona. Its probably the secret to mercadona's price to quality value proposition but Im a little bit hesitant when it comes to their own branding cause i've read its not good for local producers. That arroz con secreto iberico is one of my favorites buy it every time😅
Fabulous Stu! Thx for the video..my family (w 2 picky kids) are not the type to go to bars or restaurants here in Valencia. Kebobs and pizza is how we eat out😂.but I will be going to the Mercadona down the street now and try some of the pre-made spanish dishes! 😊 thx
Nice vlog!! I'll have to try the gazpacho. Never seen gazpacho like that. I love boquerones with Spanish crisps. Mercadona is one of the best of the supermarkets and you can find reasonably priced stuff, especially if you are looking for food without gluten that doesn't cost the earth. However, they tend to use too much polymer plastic and insist on getting pastries with gloves instead of using tongs. A waste of single-use plastic. Own-brand stuff here is fine, especially in these times.
Thanks for the tip regarding the wine, as "newbies" to living in Spain we're still buying Sauvignon Blanc at 10 euros or so, so looking forward to trying this Verdejo.
Hum, during my year in Spain, I never tried the ready-made foods. I would, however, eat any tapas put before me. How about a cameo by your son. It's been years since I've seen him in a video...a glimpse of him in his booster seat in the back of your car.
Thanks Stu, especially now like most people we're a bit lost when changing to our Summer menu. Anchovies, and crisps maybe not, but certainly will try the rest from Mercadona at the weekend. Really appreciate it 👌
Always interesting to get some wine tips also i actually struggle with whites in spain I like ribera del duera region but would like to get more suggestions. We have a local wine shop in alicante and get whites from abroad and more grape varieties are grown in jumilla etc.
hum intentaré ayudarte con algunos de los mas conocidos: intenta un , alguno de , algun de cataluña, un , , de Rueda, tambien hay otros que se llaman y conozco uno que es que es un moscatel de Bodegas Coloma. Todos blancos
Egg and chips is one of the most popular dishes in Europe. Why we can't get hold of fried egg flavour crisps in the UK is beyond me. My family and friends go mental whenever they try them over here.
Please, don't buy Mercadona's ajo blanco. It's the worst I've ever tried. However, the sole other ajo banco brand Alvalle is the best. I keep trying to imitate the receipe. Don't buy anchovies in vinegar, there is no way to close the true stuff and those are just awefull. And so on. Verdejo wine, that's been a good advice. I don't know when people decide upon expending more money to eat worse just to save perhaps half an hour a day o little more.
When I'm in Spain, I always get Alvalle gazpacho and salmorejo when grocery shopping. Next time, will look for the ajo blanco variety. (On rare occasion, I see the Alvalle brand in the US.) Also enjoy Helios tomato sauce, Borges, Hero products in Spain.
@@carmenfernandez5234 Yes, Alvalle and Helios. Good brands. Heios gets a lot of its tomatoes from a warm climate island around the Niagara falls. Both are industrial companies which try to offer the best they can. It has to be canned anyways though, that's my point.
Stuart, there is zero % egg in these chips from Mercadona, very strange that you say that you could tast it a bit. Maybe this is the same as a placebo effect!
I’d tear into all that scran, bar the fish and the eggy crisps, eggy crisps sound like my idea of hell on earth, and I know I’m missing out, but I can’t abide fish and seafood either.
When learning Spanish, I read that for Spanish-speakers (from Spain) the word 'crisps' is impossible to pronounce correctly because the monolingual Spanish speaker doesn't have the sounds and will render it 'creeps' or 'crispas'.
I agree ! It’s almost impossible for them to pronounce ! You have to tell them to say Cris pis ! ( very fast ) they feel quite 🤣🤣embarrassed saying the latter part
It was a standing joke at an intercambio I went to. One fella would always order crisps with his beer, and he tried very hard to say it but never managed.
You have presented my summer meals which I get from Mercadona. To add, I also have Gazpacho Tradicional, Salmorejo, Vichissoise, crema de espárragos, Taboule... i don't recommend the ensaladilla rusa, but OK if you don't want to cook. They aren't excellent but they are good and you don't need to cook... something I try to avoid in heat waves like we are going through at the moment!
I buy those exact egg crisps because the guiris would come to my flat and eat all an entire bag. This flavour disgusted them so it slowed down their appetite. I quite like the taste.
