I Tried Speedrunning Duolingo Portuguese but it FRIED My Brain 

Hi! I've seen some comments here on the "mulherSH" sound, but I think each one is getting only one aspect of the issue. So I came in. The Portugual Portuguese is more stable concerning its ending R sound, so it is mostly a vibrating R. However, indeed, in other Portuguese speaking countries, this sound can hugely vary. It goes from a gutural sound, through a light tongue vibration, to also a weak aspiration (such as H in House). Duolingo does have some recording issues, and for some languages the audio quality may be lower than for others. But it is worth mentioning that in the European Portugues some sort of friction or aspiration may actually appear at the end of the words/sentences. It is very similar to what some French dialects do. I knew a lot of native French speakers who do a bit of this SH sound at the end of their sentences, and it might be a side effect of how closemouthed their pronunciation is. So, instead of closing only the lips, it is as if they narrow the entire space between the tongue and the palate, creating this German CH-like friction as air goes through it. Anyway, the point is: the SH in mulherSH might be a recording issue or a dialectal thing. But you don't need to do it. You may choose your varation here, and even do a very American R (like that in puRple or in beaR), and it is still gonna be perfect pronunciation. Hope to have helped. ;)

As a native Brazilian, I can assure you that Duolingo's pronunciation of mulher with the SH at the end is completely messed up and just don't exist! That's why I gave up learning languages in Duolingo and moved to math instead.

The problem with Duolingo is that they're using more and more AI to voice the characters in different languages, which makes some pretty weird sounds that doesn't exist in such languages, such as the "moolyersh", when in Portuguese the R would never make the SH sound. At least that's what I've come up with, as someone who passed through different language courses in Duolingo.

As a Brazilian I can say, the problem is the accent of the actor, it looks like a guy from Rio trying to hide his accent. When the R is on the end of a word or before a consonant you can use the same US English R like in "fasteR" = mulheR

Portuguese as a whole has 6 sounds for the letter R.

The good news is that "mulher" pronunciation is totally wrong with that "sh" sound at the end. The bad news is that actually that "r" sound at the end of words would sound 5 different ways at least depending the accent of the person you speak to.

Fun fact: Portuguese and Spanish sounds almost the same because Portugal and Spain was basically "Best friends" so they made sounds simillar. (Portuguese of Portugal and Portuguese of Brazil. Its basically if you compare British english with USA english).

The way we Brazilian pronounce words with an r in the end may vary a lot due to regional accents. You can hear this r with a h sound, or twisting the tongue (like an american R). But in none of then we add this sh sound. It's just the tongue twisting more. 😊

So, when you soften a tapped R, some air goes through between your tongue and palate, giving the impression of an "sh" sound, especially in Duolingo (some weird sounds get mixed up idk). To summarize, it's not an "sh" sound, but a softened tapped R sound, where some air escapes during its articulation. Not everyone will say it this way, but I do know some people who may pronounce these types of R's similarly (e.g., my grandmother). I suppose it might be similar to the Ř in Czech or the slender R in Irish Gaelic, though probably not identical. Hope I cleared things up!

the S sound that theyre saying on the end of 'mulher' sounds european/carioca (from Rio de janiero) but idk why its even pronouncing an S because thats only for plural and the example you had was in singular. Duolingo is just wrong lmao

The meaning of sometimes the same words being pronounced differently is the accent. In Brazil, each state has a different way of speaking (mainly R and S), in Rio de Janeiro for example, R is softer and S is stronger (like SH)

The 'sh' sound is a result of different accents within Brazil itself. If you hear someone from the northern region speaking, it will sound completely different from a southern accent. For example, I'm from a city located in the countryside of São Paulo state, and we don't say 'mulher' in either of those ways. So don't stress over it. You did great!

As a native speaker, Brazilian Portuguese is fun in that it has lots of elements not just from latin, spanish and french, but also from different african and indigenous cultures (and some other european countries as well). This also means different regions have different accents, as well as different words for the same thing, which also leads to some conflict among regions over how to pronounce things. A prime example is mandioca, aipim and macaxeira, all of which refer to the plant Manihot esculenta, the first one being mainly used in Minas Gerais, São Paulo, in the north of Paraná, as well as the North and Center-west regions; aipim being mainly used in the Southeast region; and macaxeira being used in the Northeast. It adds a lot of variety to our language, but kind of makes us less unified, I guess?

it's nice that u speak spanish cause it actually helps a lot! in fact portuguese speaking people can understand quite well spanish speakers and vice versa ;) just be careful about false friends hahah and i recommend you look for other sources to learn the language cause duolingo is kinda tricky and definitely not the most didactic method

About "mulher", I've noticed some people in São Paulo city devoice their final Rs. Like Turkish sometimes. So that's why it ends up sounding like a SH. It's not common, though, it's a rare pronunciation.

About the "mulher" thing, it kinda seems to be an accent to me. If i remember correctly, there's an accent that makes the "R" at the end of the word sound more like an "H". Though I don't think that there's an accent that makes the letter sound like "sh", that's too extreme.

trying to explain it quickly about the "mulhersh" e "mulher" is that brazilian portuguese and portuguese from portugal are different, here in brazil we say "mulher" but in portugal they say "mulherSH".

I completed the portuguese course a few weeks ago and I was also confused by that pronounciation of "mulher" (I was hearing "mulhej"), I assumed it was just a specific accent and when I had to pronounce it I was just pronouncing "mulher". I tried turkish a bit and also saw "r" sometimes being pronounced as "sh" (e.g. the last letter in "teşekkürler"). After portuguese I started the spanish course and I have the same confusion with "b" and "v", sometimes I don't understand if a sound is "b", "v" or something in between.

The sound in "mulher" isn't the 'sh' sound; it's the 'R' sound, produced with the tip of the tongue almost touching the roof of the mouth, very close to the teeth, and with the bottom and top teeth slightly close together. This articulation causes the air to flow through the sides of the mouth and escape through the gap between your teeth, producing this sound. The 'sh' sound is produced by passing air through the teeth in the same position but with a different tongue position, I'd say pressing the roof of the mouth with the middle or back part of the tongue. At least, that's my guess. I'm Brazilian, not Portuguese, and also not a linguist, but I'm confident in what I just said.

I've never used Duolingo for any of the languages I've learned but I'm actually thinking about it for Portuguese as well just to see..... I think you have to dial in or differentiate on Duolingo between European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese that's where you're gonna hear the big differences in pronunciation…

"Mulher" has not "sh" sound. It's a Duolingo's error. Probably it's confusing with the word "mulheres". The word "mulheres" means (women), is plural, and has the "sh" sound in some varieties of the Portuguese language such as Rio de Janeiro's Portuguese, African Portuguese and European Portuguese.

Actually is not a sh sound it's more like the french pronunciation of the R, also that is not mandatory, most people speak like that but the accent changes from state to state, so if you want to use the spanish r, that's fine but you'll sound like someone from a place in the south, and you can also use the usa r, but you'll sound like a person from the countryside. Except when the two rr are together or the r is the first letter, then you always use the /h/ sound like in "hospital" and "happy"

this accent thing in portuguese is really tricky. I'd say that if you want to REALLY learn, you should definitely practice with a native/have a native person to help you out. If you learn without real practice and you try to come to a small/medium city in Brazil in some states, you won't understand a thing they say, especially old people

7:56 Portuguese from Portugal here. yes indeed in the Portuguese Duolingo provides u with (Portuguese form Brazil) you in the sentence "i drink water" it could be translated to "Bebo água" but in portuguese of Portugal the sentence would actually be translated to "*Eu* bebo água" because one of the diferences between Portuguese from Brazil and Portugal, is that, at least from what i know, you sometimes omit the pronouns in the start if the sentence, like you said, in Portuguese, but only in the Portuguese from Brazil (sorry if i sound like a broken disk or something for repeating all over again) 9:45 this is also other exemple that it also applies here, mostly any sentnece that starts with like "i am man" or soemthing like that or "i eat bread" or i think basiclaly any sentnence that starts with "I" anything heosntly, yes in the protuguse u are leanring indeed u dont say the prounoun in most starts of sentences, but at least in my portuguese you do, so if u ever catch someone talking portuguse of portugal to not get confused, if they do say the "I"(Eu) in the start of sentences edit: oH btw the "mulhershc" thing doesn't happen ever, the pronunciation of the word "mulher" always stays the same, and that it doesn't change either if it has "uma" before or not
