I tried "Swedish death cleaning" and it worked 😱 (my organizing secret!)

Hey, guys! A couple years ago I made a video where I "Swedish death" cleaned my husband Charlie's closet...and it actually worked! I fell in love with the method--it works with all your possessions, from big to little. Even your sentimental clutter. So come clean and declutter with me. I feel like we could all use that in 2021. My last video on how to organize your home using Dollar Tree products landed on the RU-vid trending page, and so many of you asked in the comments how to declutter and simplify your life to get organized. You said you felt overwhelmed, so I made this honest video about how I Swedish death cleaned my home to declutter and live more minimally. I wouldn't say I'm a minimalist, but living lighter has freed up so much more time to spend with family. Zero regrets! Thank you for letting me be so honest here and for watching!

I remember hearing about a mom, who after being widowed, realized how much her son missed dad. So she took her husband's favorite suits and had them made into a quilt for her son to take to college with him. She told him that it would like being wrapped up in a warm hug from dad.

I had a hard time parting with my grandmother's china, but it had bounced around our family for years. I finally took it to a friend who runs a local tea room we like to eat at. We got a meal out of it, but even better is seeing it on people's table arounds the tea room and enjoying it. That would have made grandma's heart so happy!

My husband died 10 years ago and I have had the hardest time letting go of his thing. Anything, even silly paper he wrote on just because he wrote on it. I have managed to let go of most of it, but I am still working through it. You sharing the story and letter from your great grandmother hit me right in the heart because I know I need to let go. I love the bear idea. I actually have a shirt of his that would make a really cool bear. And I collect bears, so I may go that route. Thank you for sharing :)

my husband dies three years ago and i have just sold the family home that he built 50 yrs ago. So i have downsized into a more manageable space and currently surrounded by boxes of treasures, his tools, the valentine day cards, my dad's war photos. but a pandemic doesn't help when charity shops are overcrowded, and lockdowns prevent us taking stuff out. Also much of the stuff he used for his work is archaic, computers have taken over, so stuff he treasured is probably landfill, as is the mountain of books, because people don't read any more. But i will, as i open boxes, make hard decisions, as i am not going to be doing dinner parties for 12 people any more. It's just the letting go of stuff family members have treasured, and i ended up as the keeper

@@janlumley304 I am so sorry for your loss. What you wrote here about Valentine Day cards, tools, and "boxes of treasures", etc, sounds like what I'll be going through if I outlive my husband. something that could be nice, to remember his writing, might be getting a tattoo in his writing. maybe something he always said to you or his favorite joke or something. I’ve found those to be the best pieces of art because then you can always carry it with you
@mariner1952
@mariner1952 2 года назад
@@janlumley304 As someone who struggles with letting go of the memory triggers, I took digital pictures of my kids art work K-12, mothers day and birthday cards, super tacky christmas tree ornaments that don't match my tree or my house but can't throw out because "awwww my first baby made this for me 20 years ago when he was 5 with his thumb prints...." etc and put them on my computer organized and burned to a flash drive. I got one of those digital picture frames so like on mothers day it will do a slide show of the cards over the years all day, a December one of the ornaments and reindeer hand antlers all month. (Your fathers war photos would be an awesome slide show for veterans and memorial day!) For me it helped making the decision to pitch or keep because now I can do both!

This video brought tears to my eyes as it brought me back to when I decided to sell my 2200 sq foot home that was chock full top to bottom (not in a hoardin way, but 16 years of collecting and accumulating). I read the "Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning," although I was just 55, and it changed my life. It took me about 5 months to do it (my Mom died in the middle of it), but I sold my home and kept just enough to furnish a place for one person. I now live in a 2 bedroom, 1 bath house (thankfully it has a walk-up attic for storage) that I keep very tidy (except my office, LOL). DOWNSIZING was the best thing I ever did! I can clean my house in an hour, and I also have peace of mind knowing I am not leaving a big mess for my relatives to clean up if I should go tomorrow.

A question that simultaneously hurts, helps, and frees, is when I ask myself, "Is this who I am, or is this a fantasy about myself?" We spend so much time telling other people who we are, we sometimes forget to be who we really are. When I let go of the things I feel guilty about not using more, it frees me to focus on the things I do enjoy using and doing.

I have lost three really close friends and my uncle as well as 7 other friends (I have never thought I would have so much loss in one year). My sister passed several years ago, and I'm now free to declutter without guilt. Just because someone gifted you something doesn't mean you have to keep it forever, use it, love it, then pass it on so someone else can love it.

Lots of garage and estate sales, thrift stores, hand-me-downs, etc. I'm retired now, and not in good health, so I no longer truly need much of what I own. While in the process of downsizing from a 3 bedroom house to a 1 bedroom apartment, I am making slow, steady progress. I like the way a smaller place makes it easier to organize things so that they can be found later. It took me a long time to understand why my Dad had so many duplicate items. Now, I know, that it is easier to buy a new flashlight or hammer, rather than find the one that is in the house somewhere. The minimalist concept is harder than I thought it would be since my hoarding tendency is an issue, though it is a milder version compared to my late father's.

My Mom died young( 41 years old)… and she was a magnificent seamstress who designed and sewed her own beautiful and extensive wardrobe. After she died, we kept her clothes hanging in a large, dry basement closet for three years. I remember looking at them and smelling each piece. Mom’s “fragrance” was still on them! Dad said that we would know when to get rid of them. God would give us a sign! As it turned out, Dad’s secretary had a needy sister-in-law who was beginning to work outside the home. Dad gave her all Mom’s gorgeous clothes...except for the ones that we daughters chose to keep for ourselves, of course. The lady was so tickled! She told Dad that she had a fashion show, trying everything on, for her family. We were delighted!

I know you have sons, not daughters, but PLEASE Save something of GG's for each of your sons as a family heirloom. It's also a good idea if you also take a picture of your good sentimental items that you cannot keep , I heard. Thank you very much for taking the time to do this for all of us! Of course it helps! Do you ever find yourself looking for something you got rid of just the week before? I do that LOL! I'm praying that doesn't happen ,again to me, either! So I will ask myself also, would I run back into grab this if the house were on fire?" Unfortunately, I was moving, this was before plastic bins so I had everything in cardboard boxes, and everything flooded. So I had no choice or choices! The next time that I moved, everything was in the car and I was driving down the highway when the car caught on fire and I had no idea because it was underneath. The two major destroyers... Water and fire. So ask yourself also if you had enough time to grab a few things, what do you think they would be? This was helpful thank you! Blessings to you! Thank you again!!! Because paperwork is the number one problem today due to junk mail, and sorting it! We all need to start with filing cabinets A through Z... It's a life changer! Thank you so much again! I recently cleared everything out of my small bath. I gave some love with a spa zen feel and I can't believe how much space there is now.I also organized under the sink with your tips and only put in there what I'm using now! Thanks always!

Of course, the dog was thinking: “Don’t be decluttering the bone I buried in the sofa cushions. I am saving that!”

You have helped me so much. I have 2 sets of dishes I have never used. Sets of Glasses I never use. Clothes I have not touched in years. You have inspired me to donate and to declutter. Love your videos. 💜

What a great video! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and the personal moment with your great Grandma's dishes. I think we all feel like sets have to be kept together and truly, it's just stuff. Like you said, it may bless someone else. I'm going through this process now, helping my Dad finally get rid of so much clutter from my step Mom's passing. It's been a very difficult process for him and all of us. But the more we get rid of the lighter we feel. I hope anyone going through the loss of a loved one sees this video. Thanks again for sharing!

This is my first viewing of your videos and I must say it was the most pleasant and inspiring video. The calm tone of your voice and the non-judgment way you encourage your viewers to easily let go of our possessions was best felt when you shared the note you found from your grandma. It was great that you decided to keep 1 dish that could be used everyday as a keepsake in memory of her and yet still give away the rest of the set so someone else could enjoy them. And last, the teddy bear made of your brother's shirts was such a smart and endearing way to still keep him around without the burden of extra possessions that could eventually weigh on you. Thank you.

I'm a highly sensitive person too and when I declutter I ask myself if I have used the item in the last 6 months (in the last year for seasonal items) and I try not to keep "just in case" items that clutter my space. For me, gratitude really helps and knowing that the things I don't use much can bless someone else is something that makes decluttering much easier.

Thank you for being so personal! This video actually made me cry. My husband passed away last year after nearly 40 years of marriage, then a few months later, my Stepdaughter passed, and then my sister just this January. It's been a long journey and I thank God He is with me walking me through this. You are right, it is SO hard to let those items go. They are so sentimental, but the memories of them will last forever! I have been slowly purging through those items and only keeping what is truly special and unique about each one of their lives. Thank you again for being real. This video has really helped me, thank you for this awesome channel! Blessings ❤️
