The Casado Edition is matured it for six years in 38 first-fill bourbon barrels before marrying them for a further two years in a pair of 6,000 litre Portuguese red wine vats. The SWA rules require the whisky to be aged of a minimum of 3 years in oak casks not exceeding 700 litres. No restrictions on how they are finished as long as there are no additives.
Awesome, good to know, Thanks for the clarification. I guess they were in hot water prior because the Mezcal and Calvados bottlings were full term maturation.
I'm looking forward to watching your comparison of the Machir Bay Cask Strength and the Fino Jon! I've got a soft spot for this distillery after visiting. Cheers Neighbour!
Have you tried their batch proof core range yet? It’s priced somewhere between regular Machir and 100% Islay and is such a good offering for the price (in my opinion)
Kilchoman is showing very well a couple decades in(almost). Glad you're enjoying them! And yet another stellar Bruichladdich Islay barley, some of their best stuff really. Cheers 🥃
Bugger, I bought the Kilchoman Casado when I was at the distillery last week and now I wish I bought the Machine Bay CS. I'm a sucker for distillery exclusives - not in a hurry to open it now.☹
That Machir Bay Cask Strength showed really well. But who knows, my palate isn't your palate, maybe you'll really enjoy it! And a Casado vat is certainly unique! It just got outshined for me, that's all. Certainly not a bad whisky, just stiff competition.
SWA seems to have some seriously arbitrary, or at least, flexible, rules based on “tradition,” but this still begs the interesting question about the difference between “finished”, “aged”, “matured”, and “double matured”.
Funny how the "tradition" changes quite quickly once the larger producers are ready to take part in said cask shenanigans. It would be nice for them to specifically define what would be a finish vs double maturation. Cheers 🥃
I am particularly partial to the 100% Islay 10th Edition, though I've only had 3 of them. There are some 100% Islay single casks floating around out there too. Cheers John 🥃
