Using the Digirig, and a cable I have a QSO with Matt on RF using M17.
If you haven't already done so, check out Matt's video on what he was using: • Module17 Standalone M1...

Hi Guys, Jonathan, you had to visit the Friedrichshafen HAM Fair,, M17 guys were there with the prototype boards, cases and a lot of their toys. They were so kind to show and explain it all in detail. Can't wait to get one in my hands!!! Thank you M17 for your time at the fair, great radio! Very nice video Jonathan.

Thanks for this video Jonathan. M17 is new to me and this was a great introduction. I would certainly like to learn more about it and try it in the future.

This is the first time I’ve heard of this mode. Interesting topic. Thank you M0DSK

There's a very, very important thing you skipped. M17 will also have packet mode for arbitrary data, like ax.25 or Motorola's PDP over IP. Think of new BBSs, digipeaters, etc.

Thanks for the comment. I will admit I am no expert on M17, and look forward to watching its progress. 73!

Too bad there's no free dev to fix SDRangel's M17 packet mode implementation :)

I've used FreeDV and it's fine. In fact it was possible to use it over a 70cm FM repeater (with the keeper's permission) and it works.

WIll M17 completely replace other digital voice modes? No. Will it partially replace them? For sure. M17 is already 4th most used DV mode among W0CHP's PiStar Dashboard's users, beating P25 and NXDN, even though there are no M17 handhelds on the market!

Would be nice to see a baofeng M17 native radio out there. I ordered a M17 board to convert my Kenwood tm-71a that was otherwise growing dust considering nobody around me really uses the 2m/70cm repeaters despite multiple attempts to get qso's going by throwing my call out at random different hours of the day and days of the week. At least this way I can use my hotspots to play around on M17!

FreeDV and M17 use the same codec. FreeDV seems to be primarily HF vs M17 for VHF/UHF. I'm curious what the difference between the two is, assuming they use similar bitrates.
@batoniarz
@batoniarz 9 месяцев назад
Different rate, M17 uses much faster, 3200 and 1600bps. Then - modulation is different, it's 4FSK in the case of M17.

Please could you make a recording of the M17 transmission received on a 2m NBFM receiver so we can know what it sounds like without decoding ?

I’ll see what I can do. But there isn’t going to be much entertainment value to that! 73!

Sounds like white noise, band limited to DC-2.4kHz.

The interfacing/hardware is not the problem, the problem is the barely understandable voice quality..
@M0JSX

I know what you mean, however it isn’t significantly worse than the other digital voice modes out there. 73!

@@M0JSX That’s true, but analogue is still much better. I guess DV has other uses as well.

How does it sound? Just like every other digital mode.. robotic, broken, and all-or-nothing. At least it is open source and under development

Brill Video , I wonder if the UV-5 link would work ?
@M0JSX
@M0JSX 10 месяцев назад
Does the UV-5 support 9600baud packet?
@batoniarz
@batoniarz 9 месяцев назад
UV-K5 won't work with M17 without hardware mods. Even then, the baseband signal is still a mess.

What do you think will make the M17 truly attractive to radio amateurs compared to the current modes?
@M0JSX
@M0JSX 20 дней назад
That’s a very fair question. I think its success will be dependent on adoption by a major manufacturer (like DSTAR and Icom). I think unless it is included as part of a radios offering, it will remain niche and under used.
@gaborm4767
@gaborm4767 20 дней назад
@@M0JSX My opinion is that it will not be attractive to a radio amateur because it is available on many radios, but because it is, for example, cheaper, the sound quality is better, it is easier to use, it provides services that are not available in other modes, and it does all this more reliably. So my question was what do you think would technically make this mode attractive to radio amateurs?
@M0JSX
@M0JSX 20 дней назад
@@gaborm4767 I think it should already be technically attractive to hams. But I feel most digital voice users are buying a radio because of the ease of use and that a digital mode is included. And unless M17 is included as standard in a production radio, it probably won’t get mass adoption.

Why aren’t more people sing allstar ? Really good sound quality. In 2023 nearly 24 th big radio manufacturers should have good audio quality digital modes.
@M0JSX

I also use Allstar and thinks it is superb
@o00scorpion00o
@o00scorpion00o 9 месяцев назад
@@M0JSX I haven't got on Allstar yet, I wanted to build a radio less Raspberry PI node but just couldn't get it to work and I detest Linux because you always have to spend forever trying to figure it out. Installing software and compiling is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion . It would be good if, for example, Shark RF could build Allstar into their hotspot because I love the fact that the Openspot OS is really a OS on a chip so no messing with SD Cards which can corrupt and it boots in seconds and switches off in seconds via the buttons and has built in battery.
@M0JSX
@M0JSX 9 месяцев назад
@@o00scorpion00o sounds to me like you should investigate the Shari node and a Pi. The software is download and go and you can use any cheap radio with it. I may be wrong, but I seem to remember there being some technical limitation of the digital nodes which prevent them from doing FM. Happy to be stood corrected on that though!
@o00scorpion00o
@o00scorpion00o 9 месяцев назад
@@M0JSX I looked at the Shari nodes but to be honest I use my Laptop, Android or Chromebook mostly for digi modes via Blue DV and the DV MEga DV stick 30 that I would rather use Allstar via a radio less node if possible, the sound quality vs radio is really amazing. Blue DV for Windows greatly improves DMR, S-Star and Fusion audio quality also but All star is the best. Pity it's rather complicated to set up, one reason I love Blue DV is it's simplicity, no code plugs is a real benefit.
