The Skittles melted to the wrapper reminded me of the old Charms candies- and if you ever ate the Charms candies- they were very gummy and the plastic stuck to the candy as it scraped down your throat when you tried to swallow them. Also- anybody remember the cherry- nut pound cake? There was another dessert- I think it was supposed to be an oatmeal bar- we called it the sawdust bar. It was great to have in the field but it was a reprehensible dessert to eat in garrison.
Man, that menu is not for the faint of heart!!! The oils in the potatoes and the shortening in the “pop tart” are probably rancid. And yes, they are double packed now with the actual pop tart bag in the MRE packaging.
This brings back so many memories. I haven't had an MRE since maybe 2004. P.s. I just watched you spit out the pop tart. I'm not sure I want to see the rest lol.
I experienced c-rats and the first generation mre's when i was in the military and i tried a few different types around 2004. I must admit i still liked c-rats for the most part. Just difficult trying to heat them up. We would secure them on the top of truck engines and it would liquefy the fats to make it edible. The first generation mre's didn't have heaters. When i tried the mre's in 2004 i needed a block of instruction on how to use the heater from my friend :)
I hate to get all 'back in my day' but we used to have the dreaded Pork Patty.. Been so long that I don't really remember, but I think it was dehydrated. But yeah it was pretty horrific... Then came the 'five fingers of death'

Everyone hypes this up so much. It only tastes /really/ bad when it's been stored in a hot room for years. if it's before the inspection date and you actually heated it up, it wont be that bad. I've had worse, nobody would actually want this, but it's not meant to be eaten at room temp. With MREs and canned food, it actually does make a big difference to serve it hot. Imagine your moms casserole when it's fresh vs it's been in the fridge for a day and then you leave it on the table to be 70f, then eat it.
This took me back to when i was in high school, I had an old MRE I'd saved and packed for my lunch one day. I dont even remember what menu it was (seem to recall pork chop/stew though which should've told me alm I needed to know) just that it tasted weird, but being raised not to waste food and having saved it for a special meal I downed the whole thing. Yeah by the time I got home I had stuff coming out both ends...definitely got bad food poisoning. As for the Pop Tarts, I remember MRE them being just stuck in the MRE packaging too. I never saw a Pop Tart in the commercial foil packaging stuck inside the MRE packaging until I had some humanitarian MREs. If you havent had some of those yet I recommend it, just maybe wait till you aren't having issued ones cause the humanitarian ones on average make issued stuff sad.
