We used to do it too. I honestly thought my older brother made up the technique, but now I know it's been around since way before we were. We would just play in our backyard and we'd spend weeks perfecting them, but mine were never as good as his. It definitely had an impact on me though, since I am now a clay artist lol

I did the same thing too but with clay because a lot of our dirt is clay here. It made it easy to mold and was very dense and sturdy and fun to throw.

I agree, that is such a perfect place to take dirt from and make something out of it. The metaphor of the wedding too, like we wed here now we further make things in here too. Perfect like I have no other words for it, love it truly! I wish to have such a place to take things from and make this. Sadly all my life I have bad luck following me and wherever I could think of a special place it follows up with bad things that happened there more often then good ... or places where I don't feel like disturbing it at all or take things even things like dirt. Maybe one day I find a place that doesn't have a curse attached to it ... Some related story. Not so long ago, I been little bit "greedy" it seems... I been in basically middle of nowhere and all this is because my mother's house is old and needs specific roof shingles side pieces that are not being manufactured for more then 60 years and nobody is selling them for years too, we can't afford to replace the entire roof too so I only need to replace those. So there I was riding my bike on offroads and there is this small foresty type of area in the fields and this house that fell apart maybe 30 years ago or so, I remember it from way back always being abandoned and nobody lived in the area too. So I mindlessly stopped looking around and luck had it this destroyed abandoned house I ran across that magically had the exact same shingles I needed. I stopped and compulsively started digging them out of the dirt and grass etc and tying them to my bike much as I could. I also had a bag that I could fold out and use it as a cover, so basically no one even could see what I carry at the end. I go back with the same dirt road all of a sudden an man with his car almost ran me over I turned to the side in the right time otherwise he would legit wanted to hit me and started yelling at me to take those back. I was like take what back?! He knew exactly what I had on me and where I was ... in the middle of nowhere. If he would not drive a car and almost hit me I would think of him being a ghost ... We argued a little, I found it odd that a random not that even old man I never seen before starts arguing how I am stealing from "his house" that is basically in the ground for 30+ years and completely abandoned for the same time ... It was such an odd experience and I felt bad really fast like I was stealing something actually valuable ... but I even asked tho is he willing to sell me those because I explained it to him that I really needed those, he refused my offers and explanations and ordered me to simply take those back anyway. So I did and never went back there and don't plan to ... How he knew I was there etc and from where the heck did he appeared from it's still a mystery to me but at least next time I will scout places more carefully even for days ... and especially not dig inside other people's property ! XD Hope this was a lesson to some so as was for me ... Don't make your balls from cursed weird places, don't curse yourself and don't curse others ! :D Cheers , have a good one!

Hmm...this brings back the memory of my childhood neighbour showing me a way of polishing fingernails. She got a piece of ceramic from a broken jar and pounded it into fine powder with a small rock. Then she applied the powder to her fingernails and used a cloth to polish the nail to a shiny finish.

Hmm... why would glass or ceramic enhance the polish? I don't see why that would work. I'm just curious.

Btw, you should consider doing it again, even filming the process (I’d love to learn). I wonder if you can make them creature shaped - like little blobs or whatever - and scatter them around parks and woods etc. Makes me think of how during the lockdowns people would leave little painted rocks or wooden spoons in random places for others to find and feel happier. I can imagine people coming across little cob creatures on their bush adventures and be super delighted, esp kids. I think I’m gonna try do something like that for my kids. The world feels so devoid of magic sometimes, especially when things seem to keep going wrong and all that gets accumulated is trauma instead of magical memories. I’m glad I came across your story. Thanks for sharing it. It felt really nostalgic eventhough it wasn’t my story. Reminds me of the quirky, harmless, pretty adorable but socially shunned activities I used to do as an undiagnosed Autistic kid. I find a brass or stainless steel hex nut or washer works surprisingly well. It works for a spherical surface for the same reasons that a jar or bottle does.

@@itsConnorCreates The composition of the dirt you pick is essential, as well as the drying process (I'm guessing drying it in a plastic bag keeps the moisture somewhat stable and keeps it from cracking early on, but I don't know how it affects the dorodurability)

I can imagine it would be fragile if you didn't sift the dirt. But when it consists of mainly particles of the same type and size... it should hold pretty well.
