The thing is though, because they didn't put the power plug in, they might have not soldered on components needed to get the power to the GPU, so even with it soldered on, it might _still_ not get the power it needs.

For what purpose? Even with more power, I don't think that card could possibly run any faster. The power connector may not even be wired up on such a low spec card. It may only be there if it's a shared board design with a more powerful GPU that needs the connector.
@Ray-dx2pf
@Ray-dx2pf 5 лет назад
You don't have to solder on a power connector. Nvidia made a quadro variant of this card called the quadro 2000 that had the same chip just no 6 pin. I had one and discovered I could flash a gts 450 bios onto it and use the gerforce drivers instead of the quadro drivers. So I flashed a bios that worked but had the same issue as you, all my games would crash if they maxed out the gpu. The solution was just undervolting and underclocking the card with Msi afterburner till it didn't crash anymore. Afterwords for a more permanent solution I used a Nvidia bios editing software to adjust the stock clockspeeds and voltage permanently, after that I had no more issues and the card worked fine. If your issue is actually related to power delivery this solution will work for you aswell.

dude, newbie enthusiast here in the same boat, bought a graphics card claiming to be gtx 1050 ti for like $67 + shipping+taxes here in canada. I also like you noticed the missing 6 pin pcie power socket. i haven't taken the card apart but it defo doesn't accept any available drivers from Nvidia. Furthermore my PC crashes just with the card installed with blue screen "thread stuck" error. I wasn't sent any drivers or a disc, just a printed sheet of paper with screenshots of the driver install processs. On those screenshots it clearly shows that the Nvidia installer has recognized the card as a GT730! I'd love to see this next video you're planning on doing. This has got my tinkering bone itching...

If the problem is the power connector you should ensure that the circuit that take the power from that connector to the power section of the board is fully populated with the relative components, such as resistors, fuses and capacitors. Find an high resolution picture of the board that matches the bios you used, and compare the area between the power connector and the circuit near it
@mumind2726
@mumind2726 5 лет назад
Just don't waste ur money/time and at first just try underclock/undervolt ur card just to match the 75W, that PCI-E motheboard slot is able to deliver, if games, keeps crashing on the lower power consumption, that means - the power is not a problem, just try it out it will take like 10 minutes :D

The cards without the connector usually have their cpu and memory clock speed lowered so they don't draw as much wattage. The easy fix is to run msi afterburner and set lower clocks speeds in software and give it a shot. If all goes well then either find a bios from a Eco card or do a bios edit and lower the speeds to what didn't crash in afterburner.

I think its bad idea. Think first GTX 1050 have 4GB VRAM and GTS 450 have 1GB or 512MB. You need to edit the bios from 4GB to 1GB or 512MB therefore artifacts appear on the screen.

going to need to de-solder the existing holes, first, suggest a bulb-type desoldering iron, A cheap 25 watt soldering iron should be the best for the new part, want it mounted firm and flush, wait until the iron is nice and warm, touch the joint, then apply the solder. For those joints, probably use the thicker type rosin core lead-tin solder. The silver solder is not as good and requires a bit more heat. Don't spend more than about a second and a half on each pad. Finally, use a pair of nippers to trim off any excess length from the pins on the back side of the board. Also check for other components that might have been omitted.

Your video is pretty good overall, but there are a few things you have overlooked. One of the main things that I was thinking of is that there exists are DDR3 variant of the GTS 450 that doesn't have the 6 pin power connector. The other thing I was thinking of is that there exists a Quadro workstation card that utilizes the same GPU as the GTS 450 and that uses GDDR5 but doesn't require the 6 pin PCI-E power connector, called the Quadro 2000. So, if you do attempt to solder the PCIE power connector on, I would first make sure that your card actually utilizes GDDR5 and if it doesn't, attempt to flash the BIOS from a DDR3 variant. If it *does* utilize GDDR5, you can either solder on a new power connector or attempt to flash the Quadro 2000 BIOS. Nice video.
@MatWilson2612
@MatWilson2612 5 лет назад
It won't fix it (most likely). Chances are the PCB does not have the traces connected, other issues are going to be the quality of the PCB/VRM's on the card if this was never designed for the 6x pin. That being said it would be an entertaining video, I'd probably suggest to have a fire extinguisher near when trying it though 😂

just grab an old Molex connector and solder the wires on in the right order. It will transfer enough power between it and the socket, and work just as well as a 6 pin. However the crashing probably comes from a RAM amount that is not correct to the bios which would require a modified bios. I run HL2 on a newer but cut down version of that card ( GT 730 128 bit, 1gb ddr3 ) in my older retro box and it will run 60 frames on ultra at 1080p. I wonder if trying one of those bios would do better.

No, it's not jack. You would need to edit the vbios, find the memory address, so that it reads as 1GB vram. After that, you will need to solder some resistors in their correct positions. I fixed some, which work perfectly now. There is no cake recipe here, each board uses some random pcb, no datasheet, just trial and error.

I have a genuine GTS 450 and it is a perfect budget ( extremely budget ) GPU and everything works just fine but there is a one issue... You must to find a very old GPU Driver because the newest ones causes self-underclocking problem and fixing this problem with tweaks in Nvidia Control centre doesn't do much more. So if you are decided to bring this card a second life you must to do a 2 things ( one you already did ( bios ) ). you must to solder 6pin con , and install older gpu driver. Mine is overclocked from around 740MHz to 870MHz and i can play some older titles like GTA V , BF 3 , Skyrim , ROTTR at 50fps Even the newest titles but on low settings. Keep going and fix it!

It may lead to extended system damage if you do that since it may have the components needed on the PCB to handle extra power. You may also not have a GTS 450 those were beefy cards and power hungry you may have a GT545 or something which is a lot slower and still uses a GF116 GPU variant.

Soldering should probably fix it, although it's weird that it works without 6 pin power. AFAIK cards don't without without needed power connectors.

Or older cards would straight out die without the extra power.

It might be problem, but I dont think so. You shouldnt pull more than 75W out of your PCIE, but in case it is needed it will pull more. Der8auer made a video about it, powering Radeon VII ONLY using PCIE slots. The cables got pretty hot thought.

Have faith. Soldering on the 6 pin connector would be cool to watch even if you messed it up, cheers.

Yes, you should solder the missing connector in. It is a piece of cake, but watch the connector orientation!

Yes! Please do it! Just take your time and check everything three times before cutting, powering or soldering anything! You can do it!

8:07 I think we all know what happened to that paper-towel sheet in 2020 during the TP shortages. It was probably worth more than the 450 by then.

DO IT! would be interesting to see if you can fix the card fully.

You could try adding on the 6 pin connector but who knows if it's actually connected to anything, there could be other components that are missing for the supplemental power. I'd try to work that out before bothering with the connector.

Were there any identification numbers silkscreened onto the board? There is usually something that can be searched online to find out at least who makes the card and that will narrow the possible number of BIOS options to try. It would be very suspect to me if there were none because reputable board manufacturers usually have one or more numbers that you can search for on the board itself or they would at least silkscreen the name of their company onto it. If this board were blank, or looked like it had been scrubbed of any identifiers or painted to cover them up, that would be a red flag that it's a fake.

If available I would just cut apart an old PCIe cable from a modular PSU and just solder the wires directly to the PCB. Another option would be to do the same with a Molex to PCIe cable. I know one of those sockets probably doesn't cost much but I figure at the very least that would save you some time by not having to order one. (assuming that you haven't by now already)

Easy fix, do it. Though I'm inclined to think it's a VRAM issue. As in the bios you have is correct but it thinks it has more VRAM than it actually does, which is why on medium settings it works but on high it doesn't. When the driver attempts to allocate the VRAM to load textures sad faces ensue when attempting to send data to a memory address that doesn't physically exist. High uses more VRAM for textures. Have you checked the physical chips capacity and the total number on the board?

There exist no reality where you should not solder that power connector onto that PCB.It has to be done, to see if things work! Thanks for the interesting video!

If by now you didn't try adding the 6 pin connector, try it when you get a chance. That may be all it needs.

I just bought one on EBAY. I wasn't paying attention to the connections until the next day. Without even receiving the item, I filed for a refund which I was given in full and told I could keep the card. I have no use for the card, but if I can fix the bios to show what it really is, I'm thinking I can resell it.

Also, check if your flashed bios is for the right amount of graphics memory. These fake cards sometimes have less RAM than regular cards.
