Tofu! I love tofu with an undying passion but many people are afraid of it or think it is gross 😢. But it is a beautiful healthy cheap food ❤ and I want everyone to love it
My mom has indonesian roots so I grew up eating tempeh dishes and I've always loved it! I always took it so personally when my Dutch classmates told me how disgusting (and smelly?) they found tempeh :') My favourite "traditional" tempeh dish is tempeh ketjap - super easy and delicious!
I ate tempeh for the first time last year and I'm 47. It's not at all smelly. It has a pleasant texture too. The taste is specifically tempeh. It's a new flavour if you didn't eat it before, but it's fairly mild. It's a lot worse the first time you're served sauerkraut.
Well I expect the dutch who had intermingled with us since almost forever should have a pallet strong enough by now to breez through our unique and strong flavor preferences. But maybe, just maybe, they are europeans being europeans
Tempeh doesn't smell much at all, at most like a brie cheese maybe? They can stomach raw caviar blue cheese and sauerkraut but they cross the line at beans?
I love it crumbled up and marinated in Asian sauces and air-fried. I make an Asian salad with brown rice noodles and veggies with some romaine lettuce chopped in and shredded cabbage.
I found that soaking/boiling the Tempeh in a veggie broth/stock for 10-15mins will get rid of the bitterness, before frying/grilling/roasting the Tempeh, but clearly the seasoning used here, of Tamari or Soy & lime juice, coupled with the sweet pickled challots & peppers/chillies also works very well to disguise the bitterness. Great plant based taco recipe for sure👍🏾
I do prefer to stay as clean, and frugal, as possible so I generally make crema, avocado or plain, using soaked cashews. Just another glitch from me: I'm super peanut allergic and the crumbled tempeh looks like peanuts. I kept reminding myself: it's really tempeh, it's really tempeh. And of course recipe 3 won't work for me. I love the pickled topping idea. Question (as a single person) could one make the tempeh crumble through the spicing step and freeze some for later reheating? Another question: are all your testers vegan? I love the tester panel concept!!
Hmm, wondering if you could use plain cooked soybeans for 1 and 2? I have a 7 lb bag of dried in my pantry and been searching for a way to use them up. 😆
Thank you Nisha for this incredible experience :) everyone at the Arizpe sanctuary had so much fun making the video and tasting your recipe. So happy our rescues got their 15 seconds of fame 💚 Keep up with your amazing videos!
I must be the odd one out because I LOVE the flavor of tempeh on its own. I just fry it up and eat it plain lol. BUT THESE RECIPES LOOK AMAZING. I'm going to try every single one. I'm pretty sure you're like, the best vegan cook on youtube honestly.
Yes, I just love Tempeh and never thought of it as bitter either! But these recipes are gorgeous and I’ll be trying them soon. I once made my own Tempeh with chickpeas instead of soya beans (I ordered the starter culture online) and it was so damn delicious that I’ve tried several ways of sourcing a store made chickpea Tempeh, because it was a bit time consuming when you live alone. Even phoned some suppliers 😂 Not available in my country, but hoping it will be soon! Thanks for a wonderful, fun and exciting video - always look forward to them, except I’d like them to be slightly slowed down a bit! ❤
Thanks for inviting me to this cooking challenge. It was fun to make and came out so tasty. You encouraged me to use tempeh more often. And definitely made a believer out of me!😆☺️💗
LOL we eat mashed potatoes pretty frequently in my house. No kids. Just love em 😂 Soooo excited to try these!! I've had a hard time with tempeh but I know it's great for protein. Looking forward to trying it next grocery trip!
I made a bomb tempeh wrap today by slicing the tempeh into thin strips and sauteeing them in oil with some sliced mushrooms. Then after they were all golden brown on both sides, I poured in a sauce I made from a tablespoon of ssamjang, soy sauce, and a splash of rice vinegar and sesame oil. When they were nicely coated with the sauce, I loaded up a tortilla with the tempeh and mushrooms, along with some crispy lettuce and ranch dressing (trust me, it goes really well together.) Try it, you will love it! Zero bitterness detected.
I’m not vegan, but love trying new things and finding meat alternatives to incorporate into our normal diet. Also never had tempeh before. I made the tacos and, honest opinion, really really good! The tempeh has a mild nutty flavor and the other toppings are so flavorful. Will be making this again ❤
The BBQ tempeh is SOO GOOD! I have made it multiple times. Honestly the best BBQ sauce i have every made. Perfectly balanced and super easy. Highly recommend.
Compliments to the editor! This was ensembled in a very entertaining way. Also I love to see and hear so many fans of the channel from all over the world!
@@RainbowPlantLife I heard you say that! I’ll definitely skip it for these recipes to save some time 👏 thank you so much for all these delicious, cruelty free recipes.
@@keeganitreal Indonesian here. Fresh and good tempeh shouldn't taste bitter. It just have nutty flavor. Bitter tempeh means it is old or over fermented. Even most indonesian don't like to eat that. Here in indonesia, we only sell fresh tempeh just for one day. The seller won't sell them again in the next day, so everyday is always new batch of freshly made tempeh. I'm sad that store bought tempeh which taste terrible in western countries makes people hates tempeh. ☹️ Sorry for my english
I absolutely love this format it's pretty creative, not to mention looking at the reaction of the taste testers made it even more entertaining. Hope to see more videos like this in a future
This was a very fun video to watch! And I definitely will be trying these recipes. Tempeh for me was definitely an acquired taste but after 27 years I am definitely a fan. In fact, I just found some unexpired tempeh in that back of my fridge and got excited!
These look amazing and I hope you make this a series of fans making your dishes. So cool. Also, never stop giggle at ketchup farts because then, we will all have to admit we are growing up and that not needed. LOL.
I had a cold this weekend and binge watched most of your videos, they are amazing! I am not vegan (yet) but I was diagnosed with alpha gal, a tick related illness that creates an allergy to mammal products, so I am learning about vegan cooking to round out my nutrition. After watching your videos, I am seriously considering going mostly vegan (I raise chickens and feel good eating their eggs). Thanks for the inspiration!!
This was such a fun video ! I am not a huge fan of temphe either and have been wanting to give it another try and this definitely inspired me! What a fun idea to have taste testers! I thought it was really fun to see home ooks make you recipes and testing for themselves to have their reaction in the video ! Can't wait to see more videos like these ! ♥️
I don’t know what is wrong with people. Tempeh is not bitter. I love the taste even raw out of the pack. it has a beautiful, earthy, natural flavor. People are too used to artificial flavors that they think anything natural is “bitter” or gross
Let me just say that it’s very, very relaxing to watch your videos. Well done. I love to try new recipes and your channel is awesome in providing that + a comfort feeling. Similar to when you spend years without going to your hometown and then you go visit it* and everything hits you with nostalgia.
Nishaaaa! Thank you for cooking tempeh! I’m Indonesian and I never understand why non-Indonesians never liked tempeh coz it’s like a staple here I eat it every week. There is sooooo much more traditional tempeh recipes, and I hope you can try them! We have garlic, brined then fried tempeh (idk what these are called but they’re so good), tempe bacem, tempe mendoan, and what you have cooked, we called it tempe orek. Personally, I add tamarind and shaved brown sugar, and only add fried peanuts (and fried little anchovies for non vegans). They last a looong time in a jar in the tropics so they’re perfect for a quick breakfast or as a side. Love you videos!
Well these recipes look divine! I love tempeh. I make a wonderful bacon crumbled tempeh that I love and put on everything! ☺️🙏♥️ Thank you. I can't wait to try these recipes!
Thank you for sharing I am not a fan of Tempeh, but after seeing this video I think I’ll start with the tacos. Today is grocery day so I’ll grab the ingredients. BTW I think mashed potatoes are good with practically anything any time of the year lol 😆
Girrrrrrl , you have taken your channel up to a WHOLE "Nuther" Level ! Wow , so fun to watch . Also, by showing other ppl make your recipes and comment on how good they are encourages others, like myself, to want to try them . Yay ! So Happy for You ! 💕👍👍👍👍👍👍💕
Love this format! I have used lime leaves and lemongrass in recipes, but never eaten them…they usually just perfume the dish but are removed (or pushed aside). I’ve never made anything with tempeh but you’ve persuaded me to try.
This was so much fun to watch and you gave me a reason to try tempeh again because, you know it’s a little weird but you just taught me that I need to fry it 😁😁
Such a fun video but I don't understand how anyone could not like Tempeh it's delicious. I love the nutty flavor that it gives off I'll just cook it up In a frying Pan season salt, pepper, a little bit of garlic powder. I wish more restaurants would use it.
I absolutely LOVED this format and the recipes I've tried so far were simple and DELICIOUS. I've made the tempeh taco's twice now and they're a huge hit with my non-vegan dad as well- I think he might even like them more than me! I had some leftover canned corn the first time I made them, so I charred it a bit in a frying pan and added that to the tacos as well- what a match made in heaven! The avocado crema also makes an incredible base for avocado toast or sandwiches. I've used the method for cutting tempeh in the kecap for other stir fries as well. I can't wait to try the bbq sandwhich!
this came in handy because i have two packs of tempeh in my fridge!! now I know what to do with them!! You should keep this as a series! it was so much fun to watch!
I love this idea! Did anyone not like the recipes? I’d love to hear from them too, it helps me know what to expect from a dish, and how to counteract any problems (like how you recommended adding less sugar!)
I will definitely try making your tempeh kicap with lesser sugar & add some lemon juice in it. I would also finely chop & stir in some baby spinach, arugula, green onions, cilantro or parsley before serving it. Trust me - this is one dish that blesses you with a huge myriad of flavours & it can never be wrong!
So maybe it's weird that i love it's natural taste, even plain? It's got such a straightforward, mellow umami. Almost every time I've cooked with it, the final dish had been low on tempeh cuz how I'll be snacking while I cook.
Never had tempeh since going vegan, but I'm definitely giving it a shot with some of these recipes. The kecap recipe in particular looks great for meal prep. Thank you for putting this all together!
LOL, Nisha!!! Mashed potatoes are a year-round food. And barbecue sauce is AMAZING on mashed potatoes. That's one of the ways we like to eat them, anyway! These recipes look AMAZING. I can't wait to try your barbecue sauce recipe!
I am an Indonesian. the country where tempeh comes from. I feel confused. Tempeh in Indonesia is food that is served almost every day, at least at my house. for me tempeh always tastes delicious, and there is absolutely no BITTER taste. Properly made, good and high-quality TEMPEH has no BITTER taste at all. And one more thing, tempeh along with tofu is a common food here no matter you're vegan or not
Thanks for this! I’m a really picky eater, but since going vegan I’ve learned that it’s not that I didn’t like these foods, it’s just that both my parents and I didn’t know how to cook certain plant foods to make them taste good. Thinking back OF COURSE I hated vegetables, they were cooked plain. Since going vegan it’s been the same with things like tofu, jackfruit, tvp, beans in general, mushrooms, and now I’m excited to retry tempeh again. Looks delicious! 😋
Nisha, this format is brilliant, I've never seen a cooking video with real reactions like this, you must do more of these! I've never eaten tempeh but now I want to make all 3 recipes, thank you
Tbh this is the first time I've heard tempeh being hard to prep? What do people even do to it to get a "bitter aftertaste"? Because for me, tempeh is actually one of my go-to quick meals. I just dice it, fry it, then stir-fry it in ready-made teriyaki sauce with a bit of minced garlic and voila! Eat it with some rice and that was lunch
"tempeh is a fermented food and sometimes it just looks like that" - true and a good way of not scaring the horses by saying something like "don't worry, that's just the fruiting bodies of the mould sprouting from the mycelium and in this mould they are nontoxic and have a a pleasant, nutty flavour" lmao
I might make the tacos form my family. I’ve been wanting to try tempeh as I struggle with eating enough protein so this video was perfect. Thank you so much, I absolutely love your energy.
I made the tempeh tacos and I was pleasantly surprised! I want to make these for my vegan friends who are actually the ones that made me see the light… and I have been vegan for 3-1/2 years now!! ❤
Cant wait to make all soon for me i never had tempeh tacos / bbq tempeh and indonesian tempeh kecap before will buy tempeh for this recipes in Singapore and i missed your videos perfect for my after office meals
Love your videos, your recipes and this one was one of the best ever! I do wish I could get the flavors without all of the oil though so if you ever figure that out... 😊
I am intrigued, I was born and grew in indonesia, and never had any of the bitter aftertaste that many on western hemisphere often complain about, if you ask my brethrens, Im sure they would never have problems like that of you guys, were there differences to the tempe made in your respective countries compared to those made in their origin? Indonesia?
Love it, you ARE the All American Girl for sure ❤🎉😊!!! Great video. I just found tempeh at a grocery store and bought some yesterday! Never tasted it, but read it is high in protein. So as the Buddha said, "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear." Can't wait to try all these recipes! Thank you!
I tried the BBQ tempeh last night, and it is absolutely going in my regular rotation. I made some vinegar based slaw, and it made amazing BBQ sandwiches. I can't wait to try the tacos now!
I love all of this! Everything about it! I'm so happy they joined the tempeh train :) I have never had an instance where I didn't like it, but I can see how it could be offputting from the texture. Such great recipe ideas as well! --Can confirm tempeh in the air fryer is SO good and SO fast! Edited to add: How do we get to be taste testers?! I'm very picky, but vegan, so if you need someone to try anything that's slightly "strange" - hit me up! lol
Great idea and well executed! You made it look effortless even though I’m sure a mountain or work went into this video! Loved seeing all the reactions and I’m convinced enough to give tempeh another try 😊
This is one of my most favorite videos you've made -- the tester reactions were the BEST!!!!! BTW: I do mine in the air fryer and loved hearing from a tester for the BBQ that they did it in the air fryer. It's a game changer!!
I love the idea behind this video! I never used to enjoy tempeh but have slowly begun to love it. I'm not vegan but lacto veg and your recipes have really made me excited to try new things for lunch (and for my kids). I do boil or steam the tempeh once before cooking it, because I don't always use bold flavours with it - sometimes we just leave it for salads or to snack on!
Hey Nisha, I am so glad that you included a recipe for barbecue sauce. I was looking for one the other day because I wanted to make a barbecue tempeh sub. I did find one that was sugarless and it was okay but I will try your recipe to use with the seasoned tempeh I found, soon. I enjoy making your recipes because they have so much flavor. I have to admit that I don't like the recipes that have a lot of ingredients because I can't find some of the ingredients locally. I try to do the ones that I have ingredients in my pantry.
I can see you in a culinary castle/restaurant/bed & breakfast resort, with beautiful gardens with rescued cows and farm animals roaming about. Your food is so great and I know people would travel to try your creations!!!
I just tried the tacos last night and they were amazing! I’m just transitioning to vegan and this was the first meal I made. Thank you for the wonderful recipe and I can’t wait to try more from you!❤
Begone the days of boiling/steaming slices of tempeh before vaguely crisping it up in a pan and slathering it in BBQ sauce! Dunno why I was always scared to skip the boiling/steaming, but the slices look so much more crispy and nice with your method. Can't wait to try these out, so happy to see new recipes using ingredients that deserve more love.
i just discovered your channel tonight after searching for vegan recipes, and i’m obsessed with your cooking style and personality! subscribed & binging on your videos!! ❤
Jfyi, I’m an Aussie and I’m almost certain that was not an Australian accent (from that couple you called “Aussie”). I first thought they were from New Zealand, but then I wasn’t sure…
I love the viewers/taste testers feedback. This is a great format to incorporate into your videos. Loved it. I too don’t care for tempeh, but I will definitely try one or two of the recipes and see if I too can be converted. Thanks for putting this one together.
As someone who loves tempeh it's so interesting to hear that people don't like the bitterness of tempeh. I always eat it uncooked when I'm preparing it before marinating because it's sooo good. Recipes look great tho :)
Update: I can now confirm that these tacos are delicious! The day after I made them, I went back to the store for more tempeh so I could have them two days in a row. They’re that good! And pickled shallots and jalapeños are my new favorite thing. Thank you for this recipe and video! I would not have tried this were it not for the others who didn’t like tempeh. Yum!
