Hi, Hello. Whew is this a long video lol.
This is all about my experience trying ADHD medication (in this case Vyvanse) for the first time ever and how it affected me. I made this video in case there is anyone looking for more personal stories, especially for those with high blood pressure/hypertension. I had almost 90 mins of footage to edit down (because tangents lol) so I hope those who watch it get what they need/are looking for out of what I kept in the video.
As always, thank you so much for watching and tuning in to my little world. Until the next vid!!

I am 66 years old. I wasn’t diagnosed until 2007. I have been on Ritalin… AWFUL Concerta… Did nothing Adderall… Ups, Downs and crashes… Daytrana… like taking speed in my high school days. I am now on Vyvanase… I feel NORMAL for the first time in my life. Good Luck to you!

Vyvanse saved my life ❤ I could suddenly actually clean my house regularly and go to the gym regularly and I even felt confident enough to go back to school. College feels really doable. It’s difficult sure but on a normal level. I can study and pay attention in lecture and still balance home life with a 2 and 4 yr old. It really was a game changer.

@@dearjuan I’ve been on it for about 6 months now. My only issue is pretty extreme irritability. That could be from the vyvanse or just because its a stimulant in general. I’m considering trying something else because i have two young kids and they don’t deserve this irritability from me.

Hi @withmightandmane, I can totally relate to you regarding not needing coffee to feel awake! It's so reassuring that you also used the word "confused". It really is this feeling of blurry confusion. Like my eyes would not know what to focus on unmedicated. I would feel lethargic and fatigued all day, probably because of the exhausting mental effort required of me to focus. I thought everyone had bits and pieces of songs on repeat in their heads all day. Everyone thought I was depressed or anxious. I definitely did have those symptoms because I could not understand why, for the life of me, I could not remember things or execute like my classmates could. I knew of ADHD and a few friends with it. However, I actually did not suspect I had ADHD at all until now - at 26 years old. The medication for anxiety and depression just did not work for me, so I tried Strattera and experienced what you did - feeling alert and attentive! It's crazy. It's like my vision actually improved though my vision was 20/20... and I can go without coffee! Thank you for sharing!

You guys that deal with Hypertension should add guanfacine. It's a non stimulant ADHD medication that goes well with stimulate medication. The two work differently and together the result is great. And guanfacine is also a blood pressure medication so it helps both things.

Depending on the person, it can also have some rather interesting and alarming side-effects, too. I’m one of those, due to my particularly wild neurodivergent combination that it, along with Adderall, didn’t go as planned, to put it mildly. Curiously, I could go cold turkey off of (I think it was a total of) 80 mg/day of Adderall without a problem, but going cold turkey off of guanfacine is an absurdly bad idea above the smallest dosage, of which I was up to 4 mg/day of guanfacine. Sadly, I can’t afford the side-effects of guanfacine, and I also have treated high blood pressure to start with, that complicates using (apparently) all ADHD drugs except guanfacine, because they all impact blood pressure.

Dude that is terrifying and I am so sorry. Your experience is like me when they told me to go on Prozac. I'm like prozac??, I'm adhd, not depressed. 10 days of hell - anxiety to the point that I called the paramedics for an EKG. The paramedics told me once doctors hear adult ADHD they throw Prozac at it. My heart rate dropped to that of a runner (58) when normally 70! I'm no way in heck a runner. So something clearly effected my body - IT WAS NOT ALL MENTAL AND DONT LET THEM LET YOU BELIEVE IT WAS MENTAL! Instead, I'm going to therapy and going to work on skills/strategies.

Oh my gosh! I consider this a miracle that this video came up. I totally get what you’re talking about. I’m in my late 60s and just diagnosed! When you were talking about realizing that you were getting distracted and choosing not to be distracted, oh my God I so understand that. As for doing tasks, what helps me is to have a list on my calendar and check them off as I do them. That checking off gives me a shot of dopamine. You’ve given me a lot of inspiration to really get that blood pressure under control. And control my salt intake. Out that goes!

Thank you for such a forthright and honest video. Before I had even considered that I might have ADHD (and I'm 49!!) I experienced the "quiet brain" for the first time, probably in my life, after trying a THC gummy several months ago. I went from the usual "redline screaming 6K RPM brain" to just... quiet. No static. I was like, um, wait... is this what normal people's brains are like? It was a couple months later when something came across my feed that started me thinking that I might have ADHD. Getting assessed at the end of this month. Have some concerns about meds as I also take thyroid medication that can raise your heart rate/blood pressure (although I've been ok so far). I wish you luck - I hope they can get your cardio stuff figured out. We deserve to be able to function without so much struggle.

I started with Yvanse XR 30 mg (in Germany you can’t have the Non XR Meds as an adult) two month ago and I can only say that it is a miracle indeed, as you described it. Now I know how other people are able to live their lifes without being exhausted all the time and they even have kids! I got into problems with it when we started to increase the dosage (usually it’s 60-70 mg a day). I got into rage again very easily, not only at home, and it was dangerous (driving!). Now I‘m back at 30 mg and really feel good. Before I was a bit low with blood pressure and I didn‘t have palpitations, so maybe this is one of the important differences between us and something to look more deeply into for you (as you do). And if this is under control there surely will be a medication for you too. Wishing you all the best!! 🤗

I thought exactly the same as Ann San, that your side effects probably were a result of your high blood pressure, because for me, it also worked perfectly. I had and still have some side effects like less appetite and not feeling hungry and thirsty when I should, weight loss as a result of that. I just have to plan my meals and drinking better (and follow the plan) which isn’t bad to do in general, and way better possible with medication than without! Then I felt that anxiety at some point after starting, but it was gone after increasing the dosage from 25mg to 50mg (after about 10 days), what probably isn’t the best thing to do if you have high blood pressure already. So for you, it was probably the right thing to stop and not to increase the dosage. Also, I experience a decrease of the effect, which I noticed happens periodically, and I’m currently trying to find out if it has to do with the hormones and my menstrual cycle. I heard this happens for some women, and it helps them to increase the medication for those days during their cycle… Btw. I’m taking Elvanse (which I think is the same!? I’m in Portugal…) for almost a year now and the only thing I did change with the dosage is taking half in the morning and half after lunch for a longer effect in the evening. Before I felt very tired in the early evening and not able to do anything at home with my daughter or in the household after work. It was great for work but not for my private life, so when I change that about 6 months ago it helped a lot. Also, I may feel anxiety in the afternoon when I forgot to take the second half of the medication, which is not too bad because it’s kind of a reminder that I forgot and depending on how late it is I can still take it then and the effect is very immediate and the anxiety vanishes. If it’s too late, I wouldn’t be able to go to sleep early. Well I would be able to sleep (I’m like you with sleep, I rarely ever had or get insomnia, and I can sleep long and basically anytime or anywhere 😄) but I just wouldn’t go to bed because I felt so motivated to get things done… The stupid thing then is that I felt very exhausted and tired then that I wouldn’t do those things and just end up binge-watching Netflix or hyper focussing on some maybe not so important researches, at least not at 2am or 3 am… if you need to get up at 7 or 8am again. 🫤 But that usually only happens if I take the medication too late. It is incredible actually to see what medication can do to us, and especially if you're so aware of it/yourself to notice it that much! My goal is to get a good and healthy routine to be able to live without the medication at some point in my life again. 😌

I started on the 30mg for 3 weeks then moved up to 40mg for 2 months then went to 50mg for 3 weeks. 50 was too strong and I could feel my heart rate increase when I would get triggered. I started losing my temper at everyone, snapping at my wife and clients. I had no filter and would have outburst with no warning signs so I went back to 30mg this week and I'm feeling my normal self. The Meds do help me stay motivated and keep up to date with my work schedule. I hope everyone finds the right dosage for them. Check your blood pressure often as you may feel your heart rate spikes from time to time if you get triggered and hopefully you have an understanding Dr. to guide you through this new chapter of your life. I have found that adding guanfacine really helped as well. They work good together. Guanfacine in a non stimulant that works differently its also a blood pressure medication. So when added together with something like adderal your blood pressure isn't high and the memory and focus is even better. For many they are even able to have lower doses and this helps with side affects.

Caffeine, including thinks like coffee and mate and things like ephedrine usually will increase unwanted the side effects of ADHD drugs like methylphenidate and amphetamines, like increased, pulse, blood pressure, etc., while not helping much in terms of augmenting the main desired effect of ADHD drugs. So basically switch to decaf or get the single shot espresso or the tall instead of the double shot espresso or the venti, and drink it very slowly.

You might ask your health care providers about using a beta blocker - I had "mystery" heart issues and my doctor looked back to see that my resting heart rate was chronically high. I rarely have chest pains or heavy chest anymore. (now that my anxiety is being managed, my ADHD is really having a party...) If you haven't already please read "The Body Keeps the Score." It is about the how trauma effects our bodies, understanding how this works has helped me immensely, plus it has lots of other resources. Another thing to look at is "The Leaky Gut" diet - it's pretty extreme, but it is the only thing that has offered me much relief for my symptoms. Sugar, fillers and preservatives make me VERY sick. It took me about 15 years of chronic illness to figure it out...Good luck to anyone reading this, keep advocating for yourself

@@saracas93 I've never tried this drug so I can't say if it's related. It very well could be the weird feeling you get from the medication. I’ll talk mainly about amphetamines (L or D or formulations and precursors like compounds Vyvanse or Adderal) for simplicity but this might be applicable in large part for methylphenidate. I think that people fail to realize that amphetamines force extra dopamine (D) and norepinephrine (NE) and also prevent repuptake of D and NE, but don’t necessarily get to the core cause of the problem. For example, you may not have enough D and/or NE, but that may be because of the reasons amphetamines counter. It is possible you are not effective at synthesizing D and NE or the things that ate precursors to D and NE. So it is often advisable to take L-Tyrosine or N-acetyl-Tyrosine as well, or even when you are off stimulants. Tyrosine is not a drug but a legitimate basic nutrient so drug interactions are not an issue. But you can even supplement 39+ g of protein instead of that is not something you want to take. The other thing is there is a sweet spot in terms of dosing amphetamines that tends to drift upward over time while you are using amphetamines and that is easy to miss, so you might consider adjusting dosage or not taking the medication more than 5 days per week or even 3 days per week if you only work 3 or only study days per week and really need the support only on those days. The key is to be relatively consistent though to that you can tailor your dose to your observations of effectiveness given a certain amount resistance based on a fairly regular weekly schedule. You might even say take a 20mg L/D-amphetamine equivalent dose on Monday and a 30 mg L/D-amphetamine equivalent dose Tuesday-Friday and then nothing on Saturday and Sunday. You might be taking too much if you have trouble eating dinner at around 6-9 or falling asleep is harder than before after taking amphetamine with or before breakfast at around 6-9. You might not be taking enough of it used to work but now you don’t feel it or your extended release or Vyvanse is wearing off within 4 hours. Extended release formulations are great for many people, but some do better if they have a lot immediately just before work with breakfast and then again around lunchtime. Some do well with a XR in the morning and an IR at noon. You also might be very sensitive to either amphetamines or methylphenidate and might have started on too high a dose. Some people just need like 5 or 10 mg amphetamine or methylphenidate equivalent. Those people might also try Strattera or Wellbutrin or another Long acting D and NE upper like Guanfacine, Clonidine, Effexor XR (venlafaxine), Savella (Milnacipran), Cymbalta (Duluxotine), or Quelbree (Viloxazine XR). Or you might be very insensitive and require an amphetamine equivalent of around 100mg per day, or even a methamphetamine oral (which is a bit closer to a pure D upper compared to L/D amphetamine, so unwanted side effects are slightly lower). Finally, it might not even be a D or NE deficiency problem. You might do really well on something like an non-D/NE specific antidepressant (like an SSRI or or on something like Provigil (Modafinil), or even Monjarno or Ozempic or just taking 5-HTP, taurine, L-theanine, and acetyl-L-carnitine along with L-tyrosine or N-acytl tyrosine.

Vyvanse is kind of known for it’s cardiovascular impacts - even if it’s not necessarily more risky, people seem to experience more side effects. It honestly wouldn’t hurt to try a different medication and therapeutic class for a week or two just to see if you don’t experience the side effects. It’s very common for people to have to try different medications and levels. On a different note, I completely relate to the distracted focused thing. It’s awful. Maybe worse than just regular ADHD distraction.

I did a lot of ecstacy at raves in the 90s an felt like the clouds were lifted (prolly was cut with meth or some other amphetamine lol) so I'm sure its legit but not sure I want that experience at this point in my life.

I also drink SO much coffee 🥲...or at least I did before taking Vyvanse (almost back to my regular caffeine consumption now though lol.) Apparently it's pretty common for folx with ADHD to self-medicate with those things (even if they don't realize that's why) so I'm not surprised it helped when you did. I can't say I know what that's like as I'm pretty square 🤓 lol, but my understanding is it is Vyvanse and Concerts are far far less intense than the recreational stuff-- I guess kind of like micro-dosing if you think about it 🤔. Hi! Im a psychiatry nurse and I am diagnosed with ADHD. Saying that, let me tell you that stimulants can worsen anxiaty, but most times it will go away after a while. 20mg is a very low dose and the average dose always vary but eventually you dö get to a point where you feel stable. Medication is only a part of the treatment as you know. Knowing what are your strenghts and struggles with tour ADHD is something you can work with health care provider. The meditation helps you to be able to work on the strategies and work on them a loooong time until they become habbits. Its so hard and it takes time. I think that you where overwhelmed and perhaps on the edge to burnout, based on the things you described before starting meditation, and those things must be addressed as well. I hope you are feeling better and that perhaps you give medication a try again, since it sounds like you would benefit from it. Thank you for sharing your experience. 😊😊

@@withmightandmane You could try Tyrosine supplements or follow a high protein diet (which inreases tyrosine), and basically what that does is increase Norepinephrine which is what the caffeine in coffee does essentially creating the alert feeling you described. There are also other alternatives including methylphenidate-based stimulants like Ritalin, and Concerta, or if stimulants aren't your fancy, you could try an antidepressant called Strattera which specifically, and only raises norepinephrine. Hi sweetheart! First of all: thank you for sharing! Second of all: i cannot shorten any explanaition for the life of me, so this is a really long comment 😂 I just had my very first appointment with my psychiatrist in late November. She handed me 2 tests, one for anxiety and one for ADHD. Before going, i had had a pretty heated argument with my mom (whome i still live with) about whether or not i should go on medication for whatever was “wrong” with me (she wanted me to completely refuse medication). I said that i wouldn’t take meds for anxiety, but i *would* take meds if the diagnosis was something you * needed * meds for. Back to the 2 tests. I scored relatively low on anxiety, but i scored pretty high on ADHD, so the doc handed me a 20 page long test (the diva-test) for further investigation of my symptoms. I related to 80% of the statements in that test, so i actually felt really relieved because it seemed like i could finally get a conclusion on as to why i felt the way i did (and still do atm). I still dont truly feel like i can claim ADHD within myself but i also feel very much connected to the discription of what its like for most people. I might need a conclusion before i can really say that i’m part of the “community”. I have my second appointment with the psychiatrist on Febuary 3rd, to which i will bring back the 20 page test. I assume this is also where she’ll look at the test and maybe give me something like a final verdict/a diagnosis and hopefully prescription medication. I am so excited about trying something that might help me, because i’ve been living like this since i can remember, but my symptoms never included hyperactivity, so no one ever suspected ADHD to be the root of anything in me. I could go into major detail, but i’ve always felt like i was in my own very odd bubble of being easily drained, overwhelmed, distracted, i cry often, really talkative and loud and i often zone out if im not fully invested in whats going on. I’ve been taught to behave, so i always calm my rage even though i feel myself getting mad. I never have full on tantrums, at least not when people are around. I tend to let it all out and cry like crazy when im by myself in my room. In my opinion, emotional dysregulation is when you cant control your emotional outbursts, and i seem to kind of be able to control mine so thats why i feel like thats the biggest reason of why i cant claim ADHD. BUT we’ll see what my doctor says when i see her again, because im really excited to hear what she thinks😅 Omfg this is an essay😐 im sorry lmao i hope you were able to stick with me 😂

Omg yes I actually am here for this back story lol! I am so happy to hear your likely one step closer to diagnosis and possibly meds 🥺💗. Don't let others (even your own mom) talk you out of something you feel may be genuinely right for you. These things are so freaking stigmatized and ppl who are adamantly against it for no real reason just simply don't understand how helpful and life-changing it can be. One thing I will say on the emotional disregulation. I actually never really experienced outbursts growing up or even in my early adult years. Much like your story I was raised to be obedient and I internalized that as not allowing myself to feel or express anger. It was only in my mid 20s that this started changing (in a healthy way) and the outbursts (not so healthy 😅) only really started a couple years ago after finally living alone 😅😅😅. In other words... I still show no signs of it around others, heavy masking there 😭. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story with me/us 🥰 good luck, feel free to update us on what happens!

Good to know😂 I started taking Vyvanse in 2017. At first I was very apprehensive, and it increased my anxiety for about a month. After that it leveled out, and all my priorities started to line up perfectly. Its was like i could do 2 days worth of tasks in less than a day. I felt like i had more time. I also could focus on working out and eating right. That lasted about a year, then it wasnt so great anymore. I started having mood swings, and I would blow up on the smallest thing. My Dr weaned me off, and I havent taken it in almost 3 years. I really wish I could've remained on it, because it did help. Just cant handle the dysphoria and mood swings.

I’m my mind, you should not start on a dose that is effective. You should stay in the minimum dose and increase it every few weeks.

I’m worried about your elevated blood pressure and other symptoms. It’s been a year since the posting of your video, so I hope you’re better. This is what helped me lower my blood pressure, reverse my pre-diabetes and reverse my autoimmune disease (sarcoidosis), and that is transitioning to a whole food plant-based diet and eliminating refined oils. We have the anatomy and physiology of herbivores, and consuming animal products several times per day for decades really hurts us (hypertension, heart disease, dementia, reproductive cancers from too much dairy protein, in and on.
