Hey look I'm finally doing Egyptian myths like the story of how Atum emerged from Nun and created the world and the death of Osiris and the contendings of Horus and Set and can you tell I'm just trying to put as many relevant Egyptian Mythology keywords I can think of in this description for SEO purposes?

Interesting that Horus was described as feeble and weak but grew up to be strong. Almost like the Egyptian Royal line was in denial about the effects of incest… “Our child was born weak and deformed! Do you think it’s because we’re siblings?” “Nah, I’m sure they’ll grow out of it.”
@johmlemon532
@johmlemon532 2 года назад
The Egyptians were actually awkwardly knowing about what happens when you commit incest, and even some gods and a lot of the royals resented it, and still yet, at the same time many people did extremely incestual things. *cough* cleopatra *cough* married her brother *cough* Edit: this comment is at exactly 100 likes please nobody like it!

I hate to keep talking but… lol. Poseidon’s sons Orion and other son Triton posed as a threat to the gods, so Artemis had to kill them as the great hunter she was. She pretended to like Orion better than Triton to make him hate his brother and kill him, blah blah I don’t have to say the full story. But basically, when Artemis was in love with her cousin, nobody questioned that? Not weird at all? *cough* incest

Actually it was more because Ra foresaw the children of Nut and Geb would bring disaster (and he was right since Isis was able steal Ra’s saliva and create a deadly cobra to poison Ra. Ra didn’t die but was in so much agony. Isis was able to cure it, but under the condition Ra giving her his secret name, which she was able to use to get him to step down and let Osiris rule, which then snowballed into all the Set drama) In response to said prophecy, Ra forbade Nut from giving birth any day of the year (and in this time it was 360 days) Nut got a loophole by having Thoth gamble with Khonsu the Moon God and won enough moonlight for 5 new days, resulting in her and Geb’s children Osiris, Isis, Set, Nephthys, and Horus the Elder. This loophole abuse seriously pissed off Ra, who then had Shu keep Nut and Geb apart

So, here's one interesting thing I learned about Egyptian Mythology these days Remember how Atum suddenly turned into Ra? That's mostly because Egypt was really a kind of Game of Thrones with sand - in a smaller scale also. While rulerships conquered each others' cities, it seems like some of them got the knowingly good will of our big boy Alexander of conquering while letting them be with their own cultures. Nevertheless, they would share some funnies about each others gods, and that's when Atum and Ra probably merged into one, while being the "supreme and primordial" god of two different cultures. In some versions of the New Kingdom myths, Ra and Horus are also just one character, but most of the versions I read, Horus took the position of sun God - and thus supreme god - while Ra was in his underworld daily trips. It can be really confusing most of the times But we're talking about 3000 years of history that is mostly burried and, maybe, lost in translation. So we can be satisfied on what we got
@xenotypos
@xenotypos 2 года назад
Well religion just depended on the city and so when one particular city dominated their version of the story became the dominant one. Sometimes they just edited the story. It happened on most very ancient mythologies (Greek myths varied depending on the time and place) but it's very visible for the Egyptians since it's the chief god that changed several times (3?). Probably because the center of power of the whole Egypt changed like that.

2:52 Yeah... That is a confusing way of wording that. You made it sound like the Egyptians copied from Greek mythology. It wasn't. The myth of Osiris was already THOUSANDS OF YEARS OLDER THAN GREEK CULTURE, let alone Greek myth. It's just that it was passed down mostly orally and the Egyptian written records of the story were fragmentary and incomplete, so Plutarch took it upon himself to fill in the gaps. We still don't know how much of his retelling reflects Greek culture or Egyptian culture.

Hmmmm but they did copy from other cultures though, even if it wasn't from the Ancient Greeks that we know, it has loads of similarities with Mesophotamian myths and potentially proto Greek stories that shaped Ancient Greek stories. So you can't make it sound like it was all original because it wasn't

Egyptian mythology was around longer than Greek mythology. The copying mentioned at 2:50 was the other around

That specific part is referring to the greek writer, Plutarch's recounting of the Osiris Myth. Isis travels to Byblos where Osiris's body had washed up on a pile of heather which grew around him into a tree. The tree was then chopped into a pillar for the king of Byblos's temple, with Osiris still inside. I believe all of that is corroborated in other authentic Egyptian sources, but what follows matches a section from The Homeric Hymn to Demeter to a tee: Isis (Demeter in the Homeric Hymn) disguises herself as a human woman and meets the king's maidservants who bring her back to the palace. She's then charged with taking care of the king's son, who she nurses and attempts to make immortal by bathing him in fire each night. But the mother sees her and interrupts the spell, causing Isis to reveal her true form in anger. This story structure is first seen in The Homeric Hymn to Demeter, and as far as I'm aware does not show up in Egyptian tradition until Plutarch. So it was either adopted from Greek tradition, or added by Plutarch himself.

@@JakeDoubleyoo You are the first person to ever mention that and I am so happy you acknowledged it. I remember a TED-ed video and thinking to myself "isn't that just the homeric hymn to demeter". I kind of suspected that maybe the myth was some syncretism when Alexander or the Ptolemy's took over Egypt, incorporating their greek myths into the local religion.

Uh didn't ra lose an eye because it turned into Sekmet and didn't Horus lose an eye in the events against Set? Also if true, what is with Egypt and people losing their eyes.

Yes, Sekhmet originated as a transfiguration of Ra's eye, and Horus had his eye restored by Thoth after losing it in battle against Set.
