I turned a SCAM into a $6000 profit!

I bought a slab from Facebook marketplace and dodged a scam! A guy selling large walnut slabs sold me a $600 dollar massive size slab but when he showed up he brought me a tiny little wooden slab. But I was able to pivot and turn my potentially awful situation into a $6000 profit. In the end, the client was happier! #woodworking #slab

WOW from $600.00 to $ 50.00 now that`s a deal i want, and pushing the seller to admit his wrong was commendable. the finished product turned out remarkably beautiful. Great video and narration thank you.

Thank you… I got really lucky with this entire situation as the dude that showed up was really sketchy to say the least. I didn’t get a good feeling in my gut about him when he came to the shop but I hot and flustered and I wasn’t gonna let it go lol 😂 I just hate scammers trying to take advantage of people. I mean that’s so crappy, right?! But in the end, it worked out and I got the lumber super cheap and my customer loved the outcome! My only regret was not reporting him to Facebook but I felt so lucky to get what I got for so cheap, so I rolled with it. But surprisingly, I’ve never seen him on there trying to sell slabs again.

In the US,making small item does profit more,but in my country,not so much, only heapend in big city like jakarta, Bandung, Bogor,and Bali ( the 2 big are among the big city in west Java province)

The table looks great. I do miss seeing these big projects from your old shop. You have a unique style with your big projects and it was super cool to see how you made that stuff. That being said, with a big shop comes big tools, big overhead and big rent. With a small shop, a lot of those "big" things go away, along with the stress and the pressure to produce. The difference between one big egg in a basket vs many small eggs. Break the big egg and you're in trouble. Break a small egg and you are still fine.

Thank you 🙏🏻 and that’s probably the best explanation I’ve read before. That’s fantastic and so true! I still have a bunch of bug build videos coming though… but there for us instead of customers. 👍

So why do you not use threaded inserts for the legs like Blacktail Studios does I know Cam says screws on table legs will loosen and work their way out eventually.
@DesignsbyDonnie

I do use threaded inserts but I couldn’t on this one as the table after all that milling got too shallow and I didn’t want to drill that deep into this one. But Cam is great! 👊

Only suggesting for anyone to *match this lol, is to have the lower half end of the epoxy river to have gone down as thick as the overall walnut slab plus extra framing, kinda like a waterfall effect. As in not having that hard solid border between the black epoxy to then brown walnut. Maybe making, what looks like, a 1”x 5”x 20” small plank of black epoxy for each end. And perhaps find lighter brown walnut to * match the live edge color of the slabs. Great work overall and glad you got them for $50 too!! Damn I’m so jealous 😂

Yeah, if you get a 3’x7’ walnut slab for $600, it’s probably stolen.

Lol 😂 yeah you’re so right! I should have known that but I was being wishful I guess. Well I learned my lesson. Seems like I get taught a lot of lessons lol 😝

What sort of wood movement concern is there by adding the frame beneath the table? Did you have to leave room for expansion and contraction or does the epoxy make the top dimensionally stable?
@DesignsbyDonnie
@DesignsbyDonnie 11 месяцев назад
That’s a great question… I do find that the epoxy resin helps with stability and the extra frame helps as well. But definitely no guarantee with wood movement though. In addition, I alternated the grain pattern on each slab to help offset the movement and the table base legs are acting like an additional mega brace, kind of like a c- channel… kind of. The screws holes were twice the size of the screw shank to offer a little movement as well.

Still not sure about you Donnie... I've purchased some of your "step by step plans" from your website and I've emailed you with a few questions... no response no reply...

OK the slabs cost $50 what did the epoxy cost and ancillary items, add in an hourly rate (how many hours did you work on it?), delivery costs, wear and tear on tools, power usage, rent and any other overheads, add these costs up and your profit is.....what? Not $6000! Turned out nice though, good save. 👍🏻
