The adapter you are using for the PS/2 keyboard is almost certainly a passive adapter. That won't work unless the keyboard supports USB. There was a generation of keyboards that supported both PS/2 and USB but had only one of the two connectors and then included an adapter. You need an active PS/2 to USB adapter.
@hypercube33
@hypercube33 Год назад
PS/2 was designed to hit the IO controller directly on either the motherboard so its a little different. And yes, those adapters were for keyboards that were PS2 and USB and the adapter would flip it over. You'll need one with its own PS2 to USB microchip
@RAMChYLD
@RAMChYLD Год назад
Came here to say this. You need an active PS/2 to USB adapter. The adapter you’re using is a passive one and requires that the keyboard explicitly supports switching between USB and PS/2.
@ibex485
@ibex485 Год назад
@MVG: Try looking for a beige Y-cable USB to 2xPS/2 adapter with a rectangular plastic box in the middle of the cables. This one used to be very common and inexpensive and has the active logic circuit you need to handle the conversion.
@IOwnCalculus
@IOwnCalculus Год назад
@@ibex485 The problem with those is you can end up with poor n-key rollover performance. For something like this I'd spend a bit more and get a Soarer's PS2-USB adapter.

@@IOwnCalculus Hm I just tested this in chocolate-doom using an old IBM keyboard that I _think_ has NKRO and that beige active Y-cable Ibex mentioned and it definitely did not have NKRO support so that's disappointing but thanks! I didn't know that.

(Edited! I had it the wrong way around at first.) The simple "green" USB adapters that came with early PS2 keyboards and mice were not actually PS2 to USB converters on a protocol level .... they basically only physically connected the PS2 plug to the USB plug, and left it to the peripheral to detect what kind of port it was plugged into and switch to the correct protocol. If the mouse or keyboard you have does not support that kind of passive adapter, it won't work. Your keyboard will probably work if you use an active adapter.
@VisibleReality
@VisibleReality Год назад
The support for these adapters actually come from the keyboard, which, if it supports the adapter, is designed to detect if you're using the adapter and switch the protocol it communicates with.
@davkdavk

Good tip for HDMI>VGA adapters, you want one with a high clock cycle rate, look for Delock adapters, can't quite remember the exact model number but they're a proven good brand and any of them should do for running 1280x720p at 120hz if your monitor can handle that, which an Xbox series whatever should be happy with.

Main issue with the Delocks is they're often just incredibly buggie ie not waking up from sleep, image artifacts etc. The main thing that has taken their place in CRT circles for a default suggestion is the Startech DP2VGAHD20 which does 375mhz when it comes to pixel clock. Now this is a DP to VGA adapter and obviously not everyone has DP out. If restricted to HDMI then yea a Delock is probably worth the gamble.

I’ve had a similar vibe using my Steam Deck in Desktop mode while docked. After using Windows 8.1 and later 10 for the past 8 years, using the Deck’s comparatively simple Linux desktop with a basic keyboard, mouse, and external monitor setup kinda brought me back to that Windows 98/XP feeling. Certainly helps that the Discover application has 3D Space Pinball, Sonic Robo Blast 2, and tons of other freeware 😅

I did this a while ago as well. I have a few retro pcs so it was just for fun, but I agree that its a fun project. I did the same thing for AmigaOS using the UAE core in retroarch. Equally good fun. Given that I have it set up already it's not something I need, but it'd make a cool video if you have the inclination. Perhaps you could showcase some software that takes advantage of the sorts of specs an emulated Amiga can offer. I dont think many people are aware that an Amiga can be a completely different league than something like a 16 bit console (which appears to be the assumption by most who are only familiar with unexpanded a500's, etc.) and in fact more in line with the 1st gen of 32bit consoles. I think a video like that could be interesting to a lot of people.

If you want a dedicated retro keyboard that is also well-suited for gaming, you may want to look into the NCR-80. It's a custom keyboard kit so you'll need to buy your own switches and keycaps, but it's very easy to build if you opt for the hotswap PCB. They look and sound just like actual old keyboards (specifically the Cherry G81) but you get a USB-C port and QMK/VIA so you can program them in any way you like.

the best part of all this is it shows just how much BETTER things can get when you give an easy no-hassle way of flip flopping a console between regular and dev mode. It's Microsoft generating a ton of good will by going 'Here, this thing we made. We would like you to play with it.' No Mod Chips. no Hassle. No real way to use it for Piracy. The fact dev mode is this easy to unlock disencentivizes development on ways to break in for the sake OF piracy to boot. Like... I see a lot of people just staring at mod chip makers like 'why the hell would I buy your product?' So this not only shrinks the number of people who want to develop a workaround but also the potential customer pool. The fact that you turned it into a retro PC is just the cherry on top.

Find a adapter that has one USB and 2 PS/2 ports - you can then connect both mouse and keyboard and occupy just one USB port and by nature, such adapters must be active ones.

And mine was to make everything work directly from under windows 11 and make it all portable. Basically everygame is its own thing, sort of like GOG but tested and curated for them to run the best they can. I have checked around 2500 Titles now and I have scanveged all over the web to find any modified executable or software to make they run as simplified as possible. In may cases I have them even set up to run widescreen and at 4K. Now all I need to do is launch Launchbox and just run the executable and no matter if you are using windows 7,10, or 11 the game will run, this includes anything from old dos text adeventure to latest 2000 titles.

It's recommended to get a Tendak one (which I own, and also does audio output via 3.5mm jack), or just look online for which ones don't cause black levels to be crushed. Lastly, I think to help with that on a good adapter, the Xbox should have an option to output uncompressed YUV or outright RGB full colourspace.

I still love CRT TV and Monitors.

I still use one with modern games since many of them still support 4:3 and the motion clarity is still unmatched. Playing at 1600x1200 looks so nice

@@crestofhonor2349 nah- it is most definitely matched. A high-end machine can take a high performance oled and push it to crt-level clarity and richness WAY beyond what the last high-end crt ever produced could ever put out. It has been this way for at least the last 5 or more years at a more or less a consumer-level. Check out the CES conventions.

There is an opensource ps/2 and xt converter that uses a raspberry pico, you can build it yourself, i forgot which youtuber showed this off, but you can connect everything from back in the day, controllers for the atari, sega, dreamcast, super nintendo, you name it and it has the connector, and it goes over usb, i saw it a couple of years ago, i don't know if the project went bust or not but i hope you have more luck in finding it than i do!

I love the fact you Can do this, the question is Should you do this? And really the only answer is No. It is great we have options available, but really anyone doing this is likely to already have a PC with all the game files etc downloaded on it, so best to just install and play it from there. The other advantage to this is that you can use your pc speakers for sound and the 2nd output (assuming not in use) for the CRT, meaning less hassle setting up an original display as well. Please keep doing these videos though, it's always good seeing what can be achieved.

You still need to emulate an older PC to play a lot of older pc games on a newer machine, so its not really any different whether a person uses a console or a PC for it. You can also use an av receiver or switcher and have both hdmi and vga displays connected at once and use the same sound source for both. The difference between using an xbox series s/x and pc for this sort of thing is negligible.

Didn't even know that there is a DOSbox fork that supports Windows 98 and 3D acceleration. Nice stuff.

@modern vintage gamer ... for your ps2 peripherals to work via usb you want a signal "converter" these devices use an integrated circuit to actively translate the ps/2 keyboard signal and convert it into a USB keyboard signal...instead of simply connecting the wires passively..

Love the video! Makes me feel even better about my Series S purchase. The Windows 98 era was my first taste of PC gaming. Just one thing I didn’t like: the black exhaust circle being blocked by the monitor. Why not put the console on the left to avoid this?
