He knew the fight over her was over. She made her choice and trying to get her to change her mind was going to end as well as trying to baptize a cat plus the pick me dance never works and makes you appear weak. A good general knows when to retreat to save his most valuable assets, for op at that point his main concern was his daughter. I think he did it right you can't force someone to love you so why try???
