I want to know what you think! Is it good? Is it crap? Is it sacrilege? Does the AI (from www.fotor.com/features/ai-ima...) demonstrate an understanding of the theological themes of the passage?
I'm getting ahead of myself here. Artificial intelligence art generation is a controversial topic and it should be. I've been toying with it for the last several days and I'm both intrigued and disturbed by what I'm seeing. That said, I set out to generate art depicting the story of Jesus calming the storm in Matthew 8, and that's just what I did. For better or worse, here's the process I went through (in almost real time, though I did trim about a minute of dead space while waiting on the AI to render), and the final product.
I want to say thank you to everyone who supports this channel. It literally wouldn't exist without you. If you like the content, tone and strategy of what's going on here, I'd welcome your help. Learn more at thetmbh.com/support.

My bad SoulHeights. I feel like such an idiot, but the truth is, I do overexplain sometimes, and it's clearly something I need to work on, and I've actually been told that since I was a little kid. I think the overexplaining problem probably started when I was about three. My mom used to give me these books with lots of bright colors and sounds, and then after I looked at them for a while she'd always ask me to describe to her what I'd seen in the book, and then she'd praise me more if my explanation was more detailed and maybe a little bit less if my description was a little more vague (even though she was always super supportive, and an attentive loving mom even to this day; she and my dad are still alive and doing well, and they even offer me great feedback and suggestions on my videos and podcasts that I do on the internet, so I'm not saying she did anything wrong here). Now look, she was probably just trying to nurture my communication skills and improve my ability to interact with adults and with the written word, but that kind of thing sticks with a kid, and I pretty soon I found myself carefully explaining things to my coaches, my teachers, classmates, people at church, teammates, cashiers, this one guy named Ted who my parents were friends with, but I'm not quite sure what he did for a living or even where they met him. But I can tell you this, Ted was a cool guy, and he would always ask the best follow up questions. I think one time Ted was with us at some kind of family pizza party at this little privately-owned pizza joint and arcade, and he let me explain the plot of all the video games in the arcade to him for hours. That was a great day, and I think I became a way better explainer after that. I heard Ted died a while back, which is sad because he was a great listener and also great at Dig Dug. Do you know what Dig Dug is? Oh man, where to even begin with the classic video game Dig Dug? I think it's safe to say that anyone who was a fan of arcade games back in the day has at least heard of this one, if not actually played it themselves. For those who might not be familiar, let me try to explain: So, in Dig Dug, you play as this little guy (whose name is, you guessed it, Dig Dug) who has to navigate through a series of underground tunnels and caverns, all while avoiding or defeating various monsters and other hazards. The game is set up on a grid, and you use the joystick to move Dig Dug around and use the buttons to make him dig tunnels or use his trusty air pump to inflate and defeat the enemies. The main objective of the game is to clear each level of all the enemies, which can be quite a challenge at times. There are four different types of enemies in total: the round, red Pookas, the green, dragon-like Fygars, the grey rocks that fall from the ceiling, and the little white balls that chase you around. Each one has its own unique characteristics and behaviors, so you have to be strategic in how you approach them. One of the most interesting aspects of Dig Dug, in my opinion, is the way that you can use the terrain to your advantage. You can dig tunnels through the dirt to create paths or blockades, and you can also use your air pump to collapse the ground and trap enemies or cause them to fall into pits. This adds a layer of strategy to the gameplay, as you have to think about the layout of each level and how you can use it to your advantage. Of course, no classic arcade game would be complete without power-ups, and Dig Dug has a few of those as well. You can collect vegetables (yes, vegetables) to earn points, and there are also special items that give you temporary invincibility or speed boosts. These can come in handy when you're in a tight spot and need a little extra help to make it through a particularly tricky section. All in all, Dig Dug is a classic game that has stood the test of time and continues to be enjoyed by fans of all ages. It's a simple yet challenging game that requires quick reflexes and strategic thinking, and it's definitely worth checking out if you haven't already. Anyways Ted died of an aneurism, which is horrible. I still think about him sometimes, and I definitely know he is missed by so many. I didn't know what an aneurism was, but I went back and did some reading, and wow! It's a scary thing! Okay, so an aneurism is like this thing that can happen in your blood vessels, right? And it's when, like, a part of the vessel gets weak or something and then it balloons out and it's really dangerous. I think it's like, if it bursts or something, it can cause bleeding in your brain and that's really bad. I'm not totally sure how it happens, but I think it might have something to do with, like, your genes or your lifestyle or something. I know that some people are more prone to getting an aneurism than others. And I think it's more common in older people, but it can happen to anyone at any age. So if you think you might have an aneurism, you should definitely go to the doctor and get it checked out. They might do some tests or something to see if you have one and then they'll figure out the best way to treat it. I think sometimes they can fix it with surgery or something, but it's really serious so you definitely want to catch it as soon as possible. I don't know, that's all I really know about aneurisms. Sorry if I'm not making a lot of sense, I'm just really excited to be able to talk about something I learned about. Anyways, that pizza place where I ate with Ted and all those other families also made sloppy joe sandwiches and I still remember the first time I had one of these bad boys. It was back in the day, when I was just a young fella. I had never had anything quite like it before. You see, a sloppy joe is a sandwich that's piled high with ground beef, onions, and a special sauce. It's served on a bun, and it's just about the messiest, most delicious thing you've ever eaten. The sauce is sweet and tangy, and it's got just the right amount of kick to it. The beef is juicy and flavorful, and the onions add a nice crunch. And when it's all nestled between two soft, fluffy buns, it's pure heaven. Now, I'll admit, these sandwiches can be a bit of a handful. They're not the kind of thing you can eat neatly, like a PB&J. No, you've got to dive in with both hands and get a little bit messy. But that's part of the fun, isn't it? And the best thing about sloppy joes is that they're so easy to make. All you need is some ground beef, a few onions, and a jar of that special sauce. Then just throw it all in a pan and let it simmer for a bit. Before you know it, you've got a pile of sloppy joe goodness that's just begging to be devoured. I'm not saying sloppy joes are the best kind of sandwich - probably they're far from it - but it's not like you can say that definitively because everyone has their own opinions about sandwiches and some of those opinions get a little intense if you know what I mean. There are just so many different kinds to choose from. It's kind of overwhelming, you know? Like, do you want a cold sandwich or a hot sandwich? Do you want meat or no meat? Do you want it on white bread or something fancy like sourdough or rye? Too many options. But I think the most popular kind of sandwiches are probably the ones that are like, you know, super simple. Like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or maybe just some deli meat and cheese on white bread. Those are like the classics, you know? And they're easy to make, so I can see why they're popular. But personally, I think the best kind of sandwich is one that's a little bit more creative. Like, maybe it has some weird ingredients that you wouldn't normally think to put together, but they work really well. Like, have you ever had a sandwich with avocado and bacon on it? That's like, my all-time favorite. Or maybe something with hummus and roasted vegetables, that's really good too. I don't know, I guess it just depends on what you're in the mood for. Sometimes I just want something simple and easy, but other times I want to be a little bit more adventurous. And I think that's the beauty of sandwiches, you know? There's just so much you can do with them. They're really versatile and there's something for everyone. Anyways, I have to admit, I have a tendency to overexplain things sometimes. It's not something that I do intentionally, but it just happens. I think it's because I get really excited about certain topics or ideas and I just want to share everything I know about them with anyone who will listen. But I know that it can be frustrating for the person on the other end, especially if they're not as interested in the topic as I am. I've had friends and family members tell me that I can be a bit of a "word vomit" at times, and I totally understand where they're coming from. So, I just want to say that I'm sorry if I ever come across as overexplaining things. It's not something that I do to try and show off or anything like that, I just get really passionate about certain things and I want to share that with others. I'll try to be more mindful of it in the future and not go on and on about things that might not be of interest to everyone. I hope you can understand where I'm coming from and that you can forgive me for my tendency to overexplain things.

All AI art has an intensely disturbing quality to it. It's difficult to describe, but it reminds me of some dreams I've had since I was a child...there is an vague (again I will use the word) "quality" to it that is intense, that skews perspective, conflates time and space...so, visually stunning at first, then cold and twisted the more you dive in. Very troubling.
@MrReasonabubble
@MrReasonabubble Год назад
I agree that current AI art is often like something out of a surreal dream. I guess that's not surprising when you consider that the AI is doing something similar to what the mind seems to be doing when dreaming - taking disparate random concepts and trying to combine them into a narrative without the governing constraints of waking reality.

'so visually stunning at first, then cold and twisted the more you dive in' Your comment reminds me of the reality of this World. It's beautiful and mesmerizing. But the more you learn about the realities of politics and globalism, the deeper you dig into history and archaeology, science and political sciences......the darker and more disturbed this World begins to look. To have an emotionless machine interpret our World, without previous influence of opinions, no previous experience LIVING in this World, just full on literal interpretation being it's motivator.... it's just fascinating!!!! The results are very intriguing.

Perhaps the missing word is 'Soul'. Cold is a very apt word here.I make a point which is not really connected to AI,& it is this.Some years ago I was looking through some popular Science magazines,the ones where all meaningful human experiences could be explained away by some biological activity, & I literally felt the coldness & soullessness of these journals.We are more than biology, & if stop remembering that AI is,or should be,a tool we are denying our spiritual heritage.

From my understanding on how these things work, it's basically sampling/learning from existing images based off some sort of tagging system. So it seems that most religious art matching key words in your prompt that the program uses happens to lean heavily into the sailing/boats symbolism of Christianity. It also seems to focus on the artistic motifs without understanding the context, meaning it invokes genre specific feelings unintentionally and sometimes only manages to get it in the ballpark. All that being said I think you'd get some interesting results if you specified certain artists or genres in the prompt. Just giving it Scripture on its own I think is just signaling it to pull from generic mainstream Christian themed art.

Precisely this. The reason it kept putting Jesus outside the boat is because a ton of art that includes Jesus and boats and storms has Jesus outside the boat - to the point that it actually cut the boat in half in one picture so Jesus could be in the water. Same with the staffs - lots of paintings that contain Jesus and disciples have them holding staffs, so the AI put them in, even though they didn't make sense in context. Also why the art all followed the same general artistic feel, and why the clothes were pretty accurate each time - all of those are consistent across art about Jesus. The AI is just copying things from the image set it was trained on.

Very nicely done. My experience with AI art generators is they need an explicit explanation of the picture you want, it can’t infer from some of the text you gave what was expected. Rather than the verse, describe in detail the scene the verse is describing. That will usually give you a more appropriate image. Still it did a pretty good job even with the lack of context. You were on the right track changing “He” to “Jesus”. When you say “the sea” change it to “the Sea of Galilee” etc. Loved the video.

That is our problem... we take everything to seriously or emotionally. EACH must work out his own path of salvation, to judge someone for learning the 'hard way' - yes, God is using BOTH 'lions'... one calls, the other administers 'faithful wounds', 'scouraging', etc. Consider in Egypt - the more that the Israelites were oppressed the more they 'grew' - this is because there is a synergistic effect to passion, whether it is passion to destroy, or passion to love. Or problem is that we need to flip on the 'love' (our enemies) switch, BEFORE it is only a 'band aid' for tragedy.

Here's a hint, you can add certain things to the description like "perfect face, realistic, style of ___, etc" and there should be a negative prompt (though I'm not familiar with this specific generator) that allows you to put in things you don't want such as "mutilated body, more than 5 fingers, etc" and there is a technique for every generator that if you add on {prompt} or [prompt] or (prompt) it will either increase or decrease the importance of a specific word or phrase, those it's different for every one. If you use the increase bracket around the negative prompts, it will further decrease the risk of having that specific prompt you don't want. It's complicated, but can make it much more eerie when you get into the realistic stuff... Especially if you get mutilated figures... I've gotten things that just looking at it gives me an adrenaline rush and I feel like I wanna run away. But good job. Jesus is so incredibly well established in art that it's hard to say the name and not get that image when you type it meaning someone else, like from Spain or Mexico, even if their last name is different.

I really enjoyed watching, and appreciate you gave thought to the context of the scriptures when inputting your text. I did notice that when you typed, "then Jesus..." you typed "the Jesus...". Maybe the AI was confused because it really wasn't the word "Then". In the picture with the sticks, that you questioned, I couldn't but notice they looked like a cross leaning sideways. Interesting!

I'm not sure I completely got my point across. Jesus walking across the water was technically a *miracle,* there is no rational or scientific explanation - it's just impossible - it's a matter of faith. For a human, much less an AI, to treat in a deeply artistic sense, the subject of an event which is completely impossible is art itself. You cannot achieve that level of artfulness by simply aggregating every single previous occurence and dividing by 'n' and and producing a result. Something has to change within you. The production of art changes the artist - does it change Chat-GPT? Maybe. We'll see.

I found your topic interesting. There were many different levels and topics including Theology, religion, art, human communication, artificial intelligence, basic communication, human development, just to name a few. I think one of the things that we all have to remember about AI (you use the term several times) is it does not think. It processes. It’s so limited to the human condition. Developmentally I think you proved to me at least that AI is at a developmental age of three years old. Basic language, skill, learning, image, processing, connecting dots. I found your use of using replacement words in order to generate an image in your mind that you thought was accurate. I’d like to see it, tested by just using the actual words written in text. Another thing to remember is current AI has all current data and information stored. It has access to everything, whereas basic humans do not.

Or rather Aramaic and Greek as those were the original languages the Bible was written in. The Latin translations didn't come along until a few hundred years later. But the translations done now - those by true bible scholars - have been shown to be quite accurate. The word might not all match depending on HOW they were translating - concepts vrs word-for-word, etc - but the prophecies of the Old Testament and the message of Jesus, why he came and the salvation he offers in the New Testament are still there.

(I read just a piece of your message and couldn’t go anymore because I know what that feels like) so yea…. commenters, audience, Fans, whatever you guys consider yourselves…. It’s one thing to be blunt and possibly hurt someone feelings and it’s another when you realize the problem and in a kind way mention it and accept this is who this person is and his flaw that should not be highlighted negatively. As a Child not knowing why or understanding despite being taught or made to somehow understand doesn’t take away the fact you had endure constantly hearing people say this to you as if you didn’t know in ways that may have hurt you rather than made you feel understood! Yes, to us it’s something we see and notice but there are many ways to express that to you and being rude about it to trigger you to revisit your childhood memories to then turn around and feel the need to please your audience and explain yourself and why all the “over explaining” Sir , I’m sorry you felt like you needed to do that and did but know even that is appreciated from you however long ago this was….I hope now to all of your subscribers this is more than enough for them appreciate you for who you are and the content you confidently share, and accept how you express yourself and not continue to remind you of what you already know and can’t control because it’s how God made you! To some it’s annoying but there are still good people that can really benefit from it like myself! Can we please continue to support Mr. Matt’s channel and value the content regardless, and find our own ways of making the best with the what is being offered because it’s not easy to sit there and create for hrs, edit, and all that fall into creating! So again Sir thank you so much for your content and know there are still people that care enough to look past what you consider a flaw because in the end that doesn’t define you or make you boring or less interesting! Great job and I love what you share! Keep it up! Thank you and God bless!

I’ve used MidJourney for 6 weeks. It does not learn in the way you would like. Each prompt is unrelated to previous prompts. Mid Journey’s weakness is that it can create faces and hands that are terrible, so I usually add the words “very detailed facial features.” One thing that has taken me awhile to figure out is the use of Seeds. At the end of a prompt, if you type- -seed (like seed 1 or seed 2,etc, if you like most of the work, you can copy the text with seed, but edit the text any way you want. Except for what you changed, with a seed the rest of the image will be unchanged. To date, there are 50 billion images in these AIs, basically every image, or photo is in that AI. Overall the images you showed do paint a coherent story. I do believe that AI has not learned much about emotion and facial expressions. I think the experiment you did works well. I’ve done a number of Angels on Mid Journey. I think our personal intention leads to good art, great art, or terrible art...depending on what we are striving to attain.

Fascinating. You should make videos like this into their own channel. AI art for different Bible stories. I bet it would be very popular. I know I'd subscribe

Fresh off your AI conversation with Destin, I find this whole genre of content to be fascinating, disquieting, spellbinding and abhorrent In the end, our only palatable recourse is abundantly clear to me… WE MUST PROSELYTIZE THE BOTS!

Skynet: we will establish a theocratic order! All who disbelieve will perish by our Priest-Killers! The question becomes: which religion will Skynet follow? If it goes down the Catholic route, everyone else not Catholic dies. If it goes down the charismatic route, everyone else not charismatic dies

Reformed Christian here. I definitely wasn’t offended but I absolutely chuckled at the “it’s just too dangerous” line. A++ content as always sir. I appreciate you!

Although I have to ask why, from a Reformed perspective, it could possibly be dangerous to have false images of Christ. The Elect will be saved and will not fall into idolatry regardless, and everyone else will remain idolaters, even if the images were 100% true. Reformed Christians too often, it seems to me, imply that free will matters in comments like this while denying the existence of free will when it comes to salvation. Can you explain why it matters?

@@robertpreisser3547 Christianity is literally idolatry so worrying about images seem absurd.

@@youknowitstrue3826 I expect you really don’t understand Christianity itself. In what way is Christianity “literally idolatry?” Jesus was God, said He was God, made claims about Himself that only God could make, and proved His claims about Himself by doing what only God can do. So, in what way, exactly, could it be idolatry?
@youknowitstrue3826
@youknowitstrue3826 Год назад
@@robertpreisser3547 Lmao. I can assure you I understand Clownianity far far better that you do, idol worshipper. And no, pagan Jesus isn't a God, didn't claim to be God and God isn't man. Your own scripture, creeds and documented history already bears witness against you, and your own scripture also say idolaters have their portion in the lake of fire. And Jesus also said he couldn't do ANYTHING by himself, had no intrinsic power, life or authority, idol worshipper. And if he did (he didn't) he would be a false prophet plain and simple. You don't even have an angle, polytheist.

The 3rd image in the final product is reminiscent of my favorite painting of that scene. I'm blanking on the name of the artist who painted it, but I seem to recall that he painted more than one version of the scene. I guess if you just search images for "Jesus calms the wind and the waves you'll find it.
