DF, I'm pretty sure you can also use the orange "hold" laser to cause the sun to explode in the individual planet view, just pan until it's on screen and blast it until it pops.

Technically a supernova is the explosion a star makes at the end of its life, some of the debris can go into deeper space and form other things. Sometimes the supernova creates a black hole
