I rented a wheelchair this week, in my ongoing journey to decide whether I should buy a wheelchair of my own. I faced my anxiety about mobility aids and used the wheelchair. I found out about the accessibility of the city of bath and the Roman Baths. Over the week I got used to using the chair and my anxiety got a lot better!

Thank you for watching this video! Do you think I should get a wheelchair?
@livingwithchallenges

There are some light weight electric wheelchairs which I think you would benefit from a lot more than the manual wheelchairs from the independence aspect. If I can find a link I'll add it if you would like.

Get a wheelchair! I don't have one, but I've heard that it changes your life.

Go for it. I got my first cane recently. I don't need it every single day, but I got a foldable one and carry it with me always. So it's ready whenever I need to use it.

I just recently started getting worse (pots and eds) and your walking stick video and your whole channel have really helped me change my internalized ableism and see that people our age are disabled and it's not a bad thing to need mobility aids, so thank you for making videos!

I now feel really blessed with the way it went for me. I met with an occupational therapist yesterday and shared that I would like a wheelchair. She immediately ordered one online that I can borrow for half an year for free (insurance covers that). It will come today or tomorrow.

My life saver was a rollator from Rollz. They’re very expensive unfortunately but they’re lightweight, they support me when I’m walking, it’s a seat so I can sit down whenever I need to in a split second and it’s somewhere I can put my bag/s so I’m not having to carry the weight of them, it’s foldable so doesn’t take up much space and it turns into a wheelchair so if when you’re out and you can’t walk anymore someone is able to push you. Honestly I have been able to do so much more since getting mine! There are also similar cheaper ones that you can get though. x

I'm so glad you've found something that makes your life so much easier! I have looked into rollators but I don't think one would be the right fit for me personally!!

Places that say they’re wheelchair accessible usually only can say that because “technically” a chair could roll through it, but the real accessibility is ease. EASE IS THE POINT.

Thank you so much for how real your videos on mobility aids are. I have PoTS and CFS and I think a cane would help me so much as it means I can go out on bad days without holding onto another person. It really helps me to see another younger person using these aids as I feel less alone.

Yes! I’m 14 and I always have to rely on others, grabbing people’s arms, wrists, shoulders, leaning on them whilst standing still, leaning on rails, and if I’m not near anything I constantly stumble. Today I finally brought up the courage to ask for a cane! I’m so excited to get a little bit of freedom :)

I got a power chair and it's really helped me with my me/cfs and pots, I've got so much more freedom back! I do feel a lot of self consciousness though when getting in and out of the wheelchair publicly, as I always fear people questioning why I need the aid if I can walk, but thats more something I need to work on myself. The pros definitely outway the cons (and expense 😅) for me

@@ElinorBrown I knew it was important for me to get one that folded up small enough to transport in the boot of a car, and also one that was as light as possible for a power chair. I also wanted one with a super large battery range, as I knew from previous experience with a mobility scooter that the batteries wind down very quickly when travelling up inclines, and it can be terrifying to lose power far from home. After much deliberation i ended up buying the Lith tech smart chair X, after trying a cheaper model (pride igo) and finding it terribly rickety and it handled super poorly, sending me veering into the road. The Lith tech chair has been absolutely amazing, I'm so glad that's the one I eventually went for, however it was crazy expensive so won't be in everyone's price range (I used my pip backpay for it)

I’d love a power chair it would give me independence whilst meaning I didn’t hurt myself by walking everywhere. I have a self propelling but can only really use it myself in shops or on flat ground which my town isn’t full of. Although glad I have it as it could make family days out easier and if I’m having a bad day can get to the shops.

First things first. Love the blue eye make up and tiny pig tales very barbie in the 90s. Small wheels and no sitting pillow will make you feel the bumps so much more. ( ask a pt for help even if the nhs won't refer you ( they should but you know what some doctors can be like) they can help you pick a chair and maybe even get you a voucher to help pay for it) Your so much braver then me using a wheelchair when you " look normal" comes with a real stigma .( it shouldn't )I'm 35 and really frightened of using a wheelchair. Your doing so grate and your still so young! Well done you.

Thank you!! the bumps were definitely terrible!! (what do you mean by a pt?) The stigma is definitely real and can feel super uncomfortable!! aww!! thankyou!

@@ElinorBrown physiotherapist or it might be occupational therapy ( I'm sorry I always get them mixed up) just ask your gp to refer you to wheelchair services, they should be able to help you find a chair to meet your needs. Then you get a wheelchair from them or a voucher to spend on a wheelchair ( say if u wanted one that's more fancy then the nhs normally provides ) I think the voucher is ( or at least was) 1000 pounds the you pay any extra.

Your walking stick video came out at the perfect time and convinced me to get a walking stick which was the best decision ever. Now this video has come out just as I have purchased a wheelchair. Seeing someone go through such similar experiences and thought processes is really helpful and I appreciate the time and effort you give. I brought a more expensive second-hand wheelchair yesterday as I know the only way I will use a wheelchair is if it is pretty. It sounds silly but I first purchased a cheap stick and never used it. Brought a pretty neowalks and I'm never without it now! I know it would have been the same if I brought a cheaper more standard medical looking chair- a complete waste that I wouldn't use
@ElinorBrown
@ElinorBrown 3 года назад
I'm so glad my videos are well timed for you!! And i'm so glad that having someone relate to your experience can help you a little bit!! I'm exactly the same, i never bothered with walking sticks before finding neo-walk, partly because they were all so ugly and i would never have used one, if i didn't like it! Getting a more expensive second hand one sounds like a good idea! where did you buy yours from?

Have you ever tried using a rollator walker? That's my saving grace!! I started using one last fall and holy moly has it saved me! It gives me support while I walk and I can sit down whenever I need to so I don't need to worry about searching for a spot. I've been ill for 8.5 years (I'm 21 now) and only within the last year I've realized and accepted that I'm disabled and need a little more help than other people, and that's okay! Along with my rollator walker, I bought a cheap manual wheelchair but quickly realized that I would not have enough energy to push myself around. I have a power wheelchair on the way that I'm so excited for. It's pink and amazing and I can ride in style :D also where did you get your crochet sweater from? It's super cute!! At 11:36 timestamp

@@ElinorBrown good luck! I know its so hard that they make these things so expensive, I’m also in the process of getting one, and one thing that’s been really important for me to come back to us that spending less money on equipment that won’t work is more expensive in a way, and I’ve been given the advice that if you spend any challenging sum of money, don’t compromise, whether that means crowdfunding or saving up for longer.
