I think the biggest impact the heavy arrow thing had for some hunters was they actually got out and spent a lot of time learning how to use their equipment. A lot of us don't practice as much as we should. Good video, congrats on the deer, I hope you get more.

And you would think that something that requires constant practice people would. But the more I learn about the hunting culture the more I learn that a lot of people do not practice. They spend all this money on ammo, arrows, bow, guns, yet don’t practice. It’s pretty sad for both the appearance of hunters and the animals

I have been bow hunting for 40 years. In 40 years I have seen a used a few arrows and broadheads. Shot Muzzy 125 grain for a ton of years. For a few years I switched to expandable. I have had some good luck with them. But with that said cut on contact fixed blades have never let me down.. last season I put a 200# 8 pointer on the ground in 25 yards. Definitely want to try the Magnus line of broad head... Thank you for the great videos 👍

Valid points Nate and congrats on the doe. My theory for this year was pick a velocity/trajectory I was happy with, adjust bow poundage and build the heaviest, most FOC arrow to meet that. For years I shot at 67# 29” draw with 340 spine, std insert, and 125gr fixed blade broadhead. I was sending that 420gr arrow at 275fps. Pretty standard bell curve setup and no real complaints. Just wanted to try something new and see if I could improve. This year I ponied up for an 80# bow and practiced all summer to feel comfortable at 75#. Now my setup is a 300 spine arrow with 100gr insert and 150gr broadhead. Final weight of 580gr at 272fps. Pin gap out to 50 yards didn’t change as I just moved my sight from my old bow. Does it work any better on deer? Don’t know, this setup has stayed in the Jeep each time I’ve gone out and I took my recurve shooting a 710gr arrow at only 150fps. 😁

I'm a Hawaiian style pizza. Thanks for the videos. I recently switched to Magnus last year and with the help of your videos including taking the time to retune my bow I was finally able to get them to fly straight. I attempted to start at a local bow shop to correct the low and right impact, but I received the reply of "That's how fixed blades fly". I still like the shop, but not all employees are created equal. As a fellow long armed person, 31.5, I thank you for all your input and videos even though RU-vid has been tougher on outdoor channels.

It's like Brandon Mcdonald is your older brother from another mother. Both of you have a great sense of humor and love to teach and share your passion for Archery 🏹 and Archery hunting if one so chooses. Plus you both made a similar video breaking down a shot and using the same brand of mechanicals in Grim Reaper. Although his was an arrow that's 100 grains heavier and using an 80 lb bow instead of 60. Both still dropped the deer and rolled them right there. Definitely a fantastic video idea since as you mentioned 70% of your customers grew up in that speed game with mechanicals that don't take as much time to tune as fixed type era. Yes I like pepperoni pizza 🍕 usually with banana peppers 🌶 like we had two days ago. Good luck the rest of your season. Hopefully you find that stud PA buck 🦌 you're dreaming of Nate.

Great video. The buck I killed yesterday went less than 40 yards after I double lunged him at 22 yards. After experimenting briefly with mechanical, I went back to my 125 grain G5 Montecs. Total weight of my 400-spine Easton FMJs comes to 470 grains. Since I'm in my 70s now, I am shooting 57 pounds at 28 1/2 inches. I get complete pass throughs, and short blood trails, and that's good enough for me. I also practice with my equipment- a lot.

I do like pepperoni pizza, however thanks for the insight Nate. I've been waffling on the fixed vs mechanical debate after a ton of issues with a set of G5 Montec heads. The Grim Reapers seem really solid but the reliability of a fixed blade is hard to ignore.

@TheUngryMan
@TheUngryMan 2 года назад
@@anotheryoutuber_ Mostly tuning issues, I was good through paper with my field points but when I switched to the montecs I was all over the place, (6" plus off target at 20 yards) after a whole bunch of fiddling with nock tuning and sorting some small weight variation issues I checked through paper with a bare shaft and I was just a bit out, (maybe a 1/4" tail left) once I fixed that I was sorted but it was a huge pain for such a small adjustment to make such a big difference down range. Plus in the process I managed to bend a blade on one just shooting into a block target. Next year I'll be shooting QAD Exodus or the Grim Reapers haven't decided yet.

Great video and great message. I made a video of my ten point I shot with an elite enkore set at 70 with 470 grain arrow tipped with a 125 grain 2 inch cut mech. Found the arrow 5 yards behind the buck, buried half way to the fletchings. One key important part is to use equipment you have confidence in.

Good Informative video, I have a quiver that holds 5 arrows I keep 3 rage xtreme broadheads in it and 2 Wasp Boss fixed blades. Just depends how I feel when the deer come out, but I will say for longer range I do prefer the rage because of the confidence I have for field tip like accuracy.

Great analysis. Last week I aimed to graze the backside of scapula and destroyed the vitals and broke clean through opposite scapula. 30yd shot #100 doe only went 20 feet. The Rage mech blades broke off on the opposite scapula, but passed through and stuck into the ground. I'm suprised it was able to walk that far with broken scap. #70 / 28.5" draw / 420 grain total arrow weight / 15% FOC. First time using Rage, but i carry Griz Tricks along side in the quiver, more confident in em if I were shooting at a buck.

Nice doe and video. Even after your recommendation I used a Rage 100 for my first kill since 99'. Double lung and the arrow didn't pass through and stick in the ground like I remember. I think 485 grain total weight shooting 30" at 65 lbs. Kinda surprised. Felt good though. God Bless you and your family.

I've had a lot of success with the Sevr broadheads and they are pretty tough and I feel comfortable with them. My setup is over 500gpi though. However there is a continued cost. You have to replace the blades and most likely after I use these up I'm switching to some slick trick double-bevels, something I can resharpen and reuse.

I'm a big believer in mechanical heads for turkeys, but much more comfortable with a decent fixed blade for big game. I've been very impressed with the Exodus 125 grain heads and almost got to see results this weekend but I missed the doe. Arrow was buried over a foot in the dirt behind her, broadhead is in perfect shape except for needing a quick touch up sharpening.

I had a similar situation with a buck at 35 yards this year, shooting 696 gr single bevel, 63 lb draw, 30in draw. Passed through front knuckle then opposite side scapula. Total plan b situation. And I was able to watch the deer drop and just sharpen my broadhead, and killed a bear 3 days later with the same arrow.
@tylersuchy672
@tylersuchy672 2 года назад
I agree its excessive for picture perfect between the rib shots, but there is no such thing as overkill, there is just dead and not dead. I do believe my arrow saved me, bc speed doesn't matter when they move faster than the fastest arrow. I use a similar arrow weight for my longbow, same broadhead just slightly lighter and I purposely shot a deer front on with it at 19 yards and the arrow exited out the back ham.

With that said I went for a heavy arrow high foc build last year and I had to Abandon the set up the night before hunting season started because I didn’t feel confident with the set up , I could not get my arrows to fly right. This season I have my heavy high foc arrows flying true. So shoot what you want as long as you feel comfortable with your set up. Good luck when you get out to the stand 👍

I keep watching all these videos of brodheads like your, elk shape, Brandon, and ranch and its got my brain all over the place lol. shot one doe with the sevr 2.0 and had a good pass through but one blade bent 🤷‍♂️ what I don't like about them is when they're in the quiver they make a good bit of noise not to mention is a pain in the arss getting them into my tight spot quiver without deploying the blades

Great video. And i really like the fact that you decided to shoot what you sell in order to feel honorable about selling them. Great to see that theres still honor in our sport. It does not exist in all shops. I noticed with the mule deer i shot this year that to the naked eye (meaning mine) it looked like a had almost no penetration. But after cleaning him it actually went all the way through one rib the heart and broke his leg on the exit side. All i can figure is it hits with suck force snd speed that it bounces back and we just cant see it without super slow video. My deer was 250-300 lbs 4 year old mule deer buck. Exact same broad head but a 29.5 inch draw and 70 lbs. also it was a 95 yard shot. I have all the faith in the world in good made mechanicals. And i have no issues with fix blades. To each his own, however i do think the arrow should be light enough to get at least around 270 fps. I kno thats achievable even with a 65 lb bow. My friend at superior archery in billings montana kills elk with a similar set up every year. Keep making great videos and good luck the rest of the season

@@jasonito1723 idk. He was bedded under a rock and completely relaxed. It was a little wind also so that probably helped with fletching noise. I think taking long shots like that are specific to each situation. I shot a whitetail in wyoming at 101 yards 2 years ago and he never flenched until the arrow hit him. But i shot 2 whitetail in arkansas at 30 yards and they both jumped the string and ended in high shots. To me 30 yards is the worst… close enough to hear your bow, but just far enough away to move just enough to make a bad hit. I do my best to set up for 20 yard shots.

The pepperoni has to be the good Italian imported stuff~! I had a feeling something was up when it didn't pass through LOL I have shot 2 deer so far this year (southern mountain deer.. Not the farm ones I hunted in the People's Republic of New Yorkastan!). I had to use my xbow because of unforeseen issues with my bow (which I have a ? about a noise I hear). Anyway, one was shot with a DirtNap Single bevel 125 and the other was with a Grave Digger Cut on Contact Hybrid head (125 grains). Both deer were dead in 50 yards or less. The DRT head was a bit high and the G/D was a touch back (aiming into bright sun with a scope ain't easy). Both heads did MASSIVE damage. I will say the DRT head I can use again after touch up.. The other needs the expandable blades replaced (bent to hell). 2 things: 1) I sharpen ALL my heads before shooting to beyond shaving sharp. 2) The DRT head - I swear I was taking lung pieces out of that doe. Not just cut, but sliced off pieces. This is my go to head with both xbow and vertical. Now, my Bear Species bow is making a "creak" at the start of the draw. IF I start a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and on, draw, there is no noise. But if I shoot say 5 arrows 2 - 5 gets no creak. I go get my arrows and shoot again and "creak", It's coming from the lower area and it is not the cam. I have shot lithium grease in everywhere I could (frustration). I want to fix this myself so I can learn. Driving me nuts.. I won't even go into my constant right tear my Obsession is giving me...

Had the same issue with my Hoyt, bought a press and tore it totally down. You can't get lube between the limbs and pockets without teardown. Lubing the pockets and contacts on the limbs made it silent again. Used white lithium, I tried the super lube silicon but the noise came right back.

For the sake of argument I’d like to see you build a 600 grain arrow with a Magnus and try and repeat the rest as best as possible. Who’s to say that with how quiet it will make the bow and an arrow that’s more quiet she doesn’t respond later? There for making a better shot. I’ve jumped on the heavier band wagon and fixed blades no because of penetration but for how dead my bow sounds. In Sc we can take a crazy amount of deer and have mtns of arrow/broadhead data. I built a 350 grain arrow with a 75 grain Wasp just to prove exactly what you have. But my bow was really loud. Thanks for the content.

In my experience this minimizes string jump. This year I took a doe from 28 yards after she spotted me and settled down a bit. Hit her just a couple inches high. Center rib shot on the way in and on the way out, redirected and went another 20 yards and burried in a fallen tree. In all of my years hunting what I just described is typical. I have never had an arrow fail or anything less than a complete pass through on the big Indiana deer I hunt.

Do you think that lighted nocks contribute to deer reacting to the shot? I don't shoot lighted nocks as I think the multiple components make them less accurate than normal nocks. In your opinion, does this rationale make any sense? Congratulations on your deer.

I lean toward heavier arrows. It's just a personal choice. 17 to 22% FOC has worked for me, for a lot of years. I don't have to be right. I am not arguing. As an archer,when that arrow leaves the string, you need to have absolute confidence that you have done the best that you could do.

That Magnus Stinger Buzzcut looks NASTY. Does that 4 blade help keep it from deflecting as easy or simply a method for increased blood trail or both?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 2 года назад
I believe more in the latter as it really helps zipper open the hole. Although deflection wise from an engineering standpoint it makes sense I think.

I would enjoy a video on how to and or get rid of nerves while hunting. I did not shoot 2 deer this year because I was not comfortable taking a shot while my bow was shaking uncontrollable shaking. Is there anyway to have it stop it?

Hey jake, I recommend practicing on varmints. Pigs, coyotes, chickens, squirrels, coons whatever. I got rid of shakes this way in about 5 varmint kills when I first started bow hunting. Good luck

I don’t see enough videos on how loud arrows are in flight and the reaction time that they allow for deer to react to. If a deer is whistled or bleated at in an attempt to stop if for a stationary shot, it’s first reaction is to stop and pinpoint where the noise came from. The duck and run reaction comes when a secondary noise (un identified and a possible threat) of something rapidly approaching- the arrow. Lighted nocks don’t help either as they are a visual confirmation to said threat. How about a video on sound testing the same arrow at 25 yards equipped with different styles of vanes? Spoiler alert. Blazers are by far the loudest. Love your vids. Keep’m coming!

I shoot rage hypodermic. I've shot 3 deer so far this season, 1buck and 2 does. All were clean pass through 2 were double lung and heart and one was double lung. None went more than 50 yards. All died in sight. I shoot 70 lbs with 30 and a half draw length from a diamond deploy. I have no idea what my arrows weigh but all 3 shots were 5 inches in the ground after going through a deer and 2 sets of ribs. Not sure why all of a sudden everyone is concerned about heavy arrows and foc.

Are you not answering your own question when you mentioned guys hunting with 70 or 80 lbs draw weight “for some odd unknown reason “ then you mention slow arrow speed at 60? I watch you a ton and also always anxious to learn. Did i miss something or is the speed the only advantage to heavier draw weight?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 2 года назад
I did a poor job of explaining this and didn't realize until post editing. A lot of guys have gone to shooting 65-70-75-80# to compensate for the heavier arrow weight, to maintain the same speed as their previous, more bell curve setup. They do this instead of just learning to finitely tune the setup they have, perhaps add a fixed blade broadhead (although mech clearly works here), and practice judging distance. That's more my concern.

Several archers far more learned than myself have stated that fixed blade broadhead accuracy starts falling off at velocities above 280 FPS. Have you found that to be true?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 2 года назад
I wouldn't give it an exactly FPS, but just like airplanes and fast cars: the greater the velocity, the easier it is to lose control. We don't recommend to a lot of crossbow shooters to go with fixed blades at super fast 400FPS speeds because of this possible issue. But I have yet to meet a person who could "out speed" themselves away from a fixed blade broadhead.

I would say it's honest that the shoulder ridge/knuckle is a tough spot. But I have blown through both the humerus and scapula ridge on multiple deer. I would avoid making claims that you cannot do X or Y, cause it is done all the time with proper setups. I'm shooting a 640gr arrow with a 150 gr cutthroat and it has yet to hit a bone that it hasn't broken in a whitetail. A mechanical won't do this.
@DawsonWicker
@DawsonWicker 2 года назад
I have nothing against either, I know for a fact that fixed blades are alot stronger and probably more reliable, but what I've done with a mechanical is just to devastating to even try and switch back, I had a 6 inch entry hole and the exit was even crazier, to be fair she was about 8 yards away and I was using a 5mm Easton full metal jacket aluminum arrow

Lost more deer with magnus broadheads and they always break if you hit a bone. G5 mega meat are better quality, shot a doe thru both sides of the ribs broke the front leg on opposite side on exit and still went in the ground several inches with only 1 blade bent a little.

Shot a nice 8 pointer 2 weeks ago. The buzzcut zipped though him like warm butter. After exit, the arrow hit a rock and the boardhead was toast, bent and busted. Contacted Magnus regarding a replacement and they sent me a new one. This is the second time they have done this for me. Absolutely no reason to shoot any other head IMO.

I wish I had your email. I really appreciate your video. I love sitting in the woods with a bow in my hand. I'm 50 years old, and have had 2 shoulder surgeries. I continue to struggle with health problems and worry I will have to give up the stick and string. I bought my first new bow last year, I'm going to have to order 40# to 50# limbs. It is so encouraging to see that an average guy, with little money, can enjoy the hunt and be successful. I will always shoot, cut on contact fixed, please direct me to how adding a lighted knock effects the standard bell- curve arrow. I really fight, getting arrows to fly true. Thanks again!

Not completely normal. You have a longer than average draw length. Which creates more energy. Do you think a man with a 29" draw at 60# would have had the same results. Brandon McDonald also has an long draw length.
