Did anybody else think about how ridiculously powerful Jared is? "You can click and hold the lightning for as long as you have mana." He shocked that guy from 6:49 to 14:42! That's 7minutes and 53 seconds and he had forgotten that he was shocking the guy buy the end of the video :O

There is nothing like taking a stroll through the woods on a sunny day and watching god-rays through the branches of the trees.

11:33 "Every match is essentially the same." This is as true as this game as any game ever. They are the same but all completely different because of the amount of variation that can happen in such a random game. So it's only repetitive if you are simply not enjoying the gameplay loop from the very first match. It's a meditative game really. It can be pure stress but it's very easy to relax in to looking at the bars and numbers and going through the motions with a good amount of strategy and options. The sight of seeing men battle and settle on their own is so interesting and this is still the only game that even does that. It's not like Prison Architect where everything is tightly scheduled. I wouldn't recommend not turning auto flatten on because you really don't want all 1 flat tile of 1 height land. Earthquakes and tidal waves and bogs will just wreak havok. The key is complicated land designs to break up rows of castles so there are more buildings, making for a dense population of multiple buildings, making it difficult to take. A bit like Wales. It's the Welshman in me. You can't wreck what's already shitty. Anyway. The game is easy if it doesn't bug out. Send in the papal magnet. Wait for men to get there, then switch to attack mode. Best case scenario. But there are infinite things that might happen. It's like being a Greek god so much. You just gaze down at the peeps and laugh at how dumb they look. Then zap them to relieve the boredom. It's a mix of catharsis and relaxing. But it can be frustrating because men are so, so dumb. 'Just take that house!!!!!! RAARRARRRR!" But no. He's going over there. Into that swamp. It's funny because you aren't really in control. Only heroes and not even then really. So interesting to think about what it is to BE a god. Boring. Too easy. No consequence. Messing about and causing a mess for no real reason other than hubris and pride. All to collect lightning bolts and level up you powers by 0.002% per hour which I'm suspicious really do anything at all... It's a time waster like Lemmings but it put's you into such an interesting world and it's gameplay and pixel art converge into a brilliant game for the ages. 9/10.

I´ve played the SNES version of this game (which I loved), which looking at this, was really faithful, almost an 1:1 converstion when it comes to the gameplay. It had less maps, and a fixed sequence of how they get played, but that was probably for the better, as it made the maps harder and harder the farther you got. And regarding the controls, they worked quite well, as you jumped with the d-pad to the sections you control, as everything was on a grid anyway, and when you knew how to use the R and L button correctly, it had a nice automation to create flat land. The only problem, it was one of those games that had a Password system instead of safeslots, which meant I had to write down passcode that was bout 40 characters...

never played the original populous games, only one i played was populous : the beginning, the one in 3D. It's still to this day one of my best childhood gaming experience, despite all the jank and unbalance of the game

I knew Jared covering this game felt familiar! I just assumed I remembered him talking about it on Now in the 90s.😢

I know Jared also did the Let's Play at one point, so when I first saw this in my subscription feed, for a minute I thought my memory was playing tricks on me, and that he never actually did a review of the game despite me remembering him having done so. Convincing myself that I must've just been somehow mistaken, and thought he'd done a review because of the Let's Play perhaps using a similar thumbnail at some point.

Not a clue what demon made me rent this game for snes, but I still remember it very well. I remember cutting off my island from the enemy island by lowering a land bridge, so that I could build up my forces after a failed assault. It was all new to me at the time, and for many years afterward before I got into PC gamimg.

BABY, WAKE UP NEW PROJARED JUST DROPPED

Played and finished the genesys/mega drive version, there was 493 maps, the last one is a test of resilience and luck, you start with ONE person in a mountain rocky area while cpu start with 13 persons in an almost flatland, you are going to hear the champion sound a lot. This version did not had the colliseum to show how good you are, instead there was a heartbeat, the faster it was, the more in danger you were in. My favorite move was on maps with "water is fatal" to make my setlement 2 high, using more mana, but then i could just flood the world and take care of most enemies.

Get the weapons, outsmart the firefighters, hide from the police, torch the city, and purge its devils. But you must be careful; you cannot burn everything. If the entire city burns down, there will be no place to live. Thus, the battle is hopeless: there is no final victory. The only thing you can do is burn and burn and burn. Your highest goal is to receive the personal blessing of Canti, the god of the black flame.

New Pro Jared video at the best time. There was a fire at my house today, I really needed this.

"Sprog" is British slang for a young child, especially if they're a schoolboy in shorts and wearing a uniform blazer and cap like a character from a Just William novel. Not sure how it was applied to raising and lowering land, but maybe it implies reproduction by generating new units: "dropped a sprog" is a bit of an uncouth way of saying "had a child".

I remember Populous on the SNES, and all the different themed maps. I loved the video game world.

I still play this. But only the Mega Drive rom. Because I like to use a control pad. But it's a bit laggy on Genesis/smd. The flowers are the most useful spell by the way. Because the ai starts spamming volcanos and when you flatten that land it's not buildable on. So you need the strongest flower spell you have to put flowers there so it can be built on again. You spend quite alot of time flattening volcanos and putting flowers on it as quickly as possible. The trees give you extra mana. The roads might level down a building, but it's only one level and no big deal and there might be cases where the men are wanting a bit of extra speed to get into the fight and power up you leader to make him into a hero or just have all your men pour into enemy territory by placing your 'papal magnet' there and having everyone walk there by setting the population to 'add to leader'. There is one other mechanic you left out which is 'stance'. This is what you people do. It is neutral/make houses and walk about. Aggressive, which will make them attack enemies on sight. 'Merge together' which makes them not walk about at low hp levels. Then the most important one: 'go to leader' which will make anyone who pops out a house go straight to the leader and fall into any traps directly in their path. The last one is key because it's the only way to direct your population and it can take 5 full minutes for a peep to walk fully across the map. Yes it can get repetitive but you can win the very instant you get a bigger population providing you have the armageddon power which you nearly always do, making matches a little as 10 minutes if you want. But without that they can go on for hours. The tricky one's where you can't lower land are about 1 in every 200 maps, if that and I found it fun to play actually. There are about 5 different land types and snow and desert gain power more slowly. The mechanic is this: the larger your house, the faster power is gained and the higher the maximum hp of the inhabitant. When the power/hp level of the occupant reaches the maximum amount, they spawn a new peep who wanders off, leaving the house a bit lower in hp. People are really just hp. Bigger houses makes is faster. But don't make everything flat because the god powers will do so much less damage if half your land is slanted, empty and immune to damage or having a swamp on it. Because most of the time you are cleaning up mess and burnt tiles by raising and lowering a bit of land to clear 4 tiles at once. Unless you have flowers. You can't be too precious about making everything look like Beverly Hills. It's a numbers game and you don't get much free time so just clear out the swamps and concentrate on drowning their leader in a swamp so they keep sending men into it till they figure out what's happening and clear the swamp tile. In some games you need the wall to stop them stomping you in two seconds. Don't leave any gaps! The game holds up really well once you understand what to do. I got to level 150 ish in about half a day. But the Helen of Troy hero is so powerful I got completely wrecked because it bugged out and my men wouldn't attack them and there was no spell to deal with anything. Having to skip that on the Genesis version just made me throw my toys out the pram with the game. The lightning bolt is pointless and takes way too long. But top tip, query the peep you want to zap first so you can see when the health has run out and you can stop holding down the button. God powers are a bit of a nuisance really. They are pretty random. But dealing with that and building up a population is stressful sometimes. The powers are so random and won't do anything half the time. It's all about building up heroes and sending them out for precision attacks on the enemy, as building a hero nets you significant extra hit point on creation of the hero to it's health pool and ergo, your overall hp, which is all this game is. Powermonger is the successor to this game and too confusing to get into without reading the whole manual and it's thick let me tell you. Also using 'stances' but this time passive, neutral and aggressive, to any action, leading to differing amounts of whatever action like take food will take 1/4, 1/2 or all. Not having music is not a big deal as the games are so long it would just repeat too much or having a boring ambient noises don't add anything. This is still fun and really easy to play once you understand you are making batteries and trying to mush the power into a hero unit as fast as possible to send it out and win. Holds up like a champ.

Holy shit, this unlocked a memory from my childhood for the SNES version, I never knew the name of this game. I remember not knowing how to play at all as a kid and I would just constantly keep creating lakes for my people to die in 😂

In parts of England, a sprog is another word for child. As in, "How's your sprog doing in school?"

I loved populous 2 as a kid, I don't remember how I came across my copy it seems like one of those things that just always existed in my house.

1:40 Truth, though The Sims. The constant DLC for Sims 4 keeps EA in the black.

Sorry, but I have to say it. The trees are the best effect in the game. Just plant trees all over the entire enemy land, and then use a fire spell, and the fire will very fast spread over all the land, burning trees and buildings.
