i got to level 30 something using stick controls because motion was confusing at first and i didn’t feel like learning, but then one day i decided to actually give motion controls a shot and i got 3 gold medals 10 times in a row and i’ve been a lot better ever since. if you are reading this as a stick player, PLEASE give motion controls a fair chance i know it seems weird and uncomfortable at first but play around 5-10 matches and you’ll get used to them. although if it makes you motion sick or you already tried them and you prefer stick controls that’s fine, but otherwise i highly recommend motion. ANYWAYS HAVE FUN AND HAPPY SPLATTING‼️
SAME. I’m not gonna lie, motion did make me feel sick at first, but i got a vr after i started and kinda just got used to it. Motion is the way to go for new players and mid/veteran players hoping to play competitive, perhaps join a team, or just want to be good at the game in general. I transitioned RECENTLY, and i’m already comfy. Of course, don’t push yourself to use motion if it makes you feel sick, uncomfortable, or uneasy.
As a former stick, now motion player these are always good to watch, but when I played sticks it was so smooth that people thought that I was playing motion 🥲
The issue here is Splatoon lacks more in-depth Gyro Aim (Motion Control) settings. If Acceleration existed, you can completely increase your maximum range of motion with minimal physical movement and still be quite steady. I actually made a video about this not too long ago for CoD where I was able to optimize the use of Acceleration so I had access to MUCH higher Sensitivity levels while still being able to stay steady, thus giving me a feeling a greater freedom and control: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e41IoftsrNQ.htmlsi=oZeD5QRX6425pX4Z
I never thought about having more advanced gyro control. Personally I have trouble deciding what sensitivity I wanna use anyways, so having that much more control would make that harder lol
@Radi0Active01 Part of the issue with you trying to find that right "sensitivity" feeling is because you probably feel like youre compromising somewhere from day to day. For example, you can crank up the Sens one day and be great while doing much closer ranged engagements (not worrying about long range and very precise aim). But the next, you may feel slightly "jittery" and playing more for longer range. I use to do the same when I had Linear Sensitivity (no Acceleration). But as I incorporated Acceleration into my settings, I noticed I was doing this less and less to the point where I actually love where my settings are now but only tweak my "Steadying" based on how my jitters may feel. I now have both great control of very fine movements for sniping, can track enemies well, and also have excellent range of motion thus using my Right Thumbstick quite minimally. If devs implemented Gyro Aim at the same depth as say Fortnite or MW3, you would be surprised how much you can manipulate the settings for your preference. Gyro Aim is arguably the most versatile input method currently because of this.
To be fair, Splatoon doesn't have aim assist for dual analog stick controls so it's harder to use than most other console shooters (though IMO I agree that motion is better and I'm kind of shocked it hasn't gotten more adoption in other games, at least from Sony since their controllers also have a motion sensor).
It's due to how other companies implement motion controls in the nost gimmicky fashion resembling the Wii ( most being waggling which is both lazy and irritating).
As someone who has only used stick controls (at -5 sensitivity) for years, I love watching people suffer. Edit: after watching the video, You didn't use -5 sensitivity, sad :[
Since I've also never played another console shooter before splatoon, Splatoon 2 having them on by default honestly just felt like the natural way to play the game. Great video, might be fun for me to try this sometime too!!
@@FreshCalimari 100%. Although having to deal with the A and B button being in different spots is quite annoying when I do happen to pick up an Xbox controller for the occasional PC game
I've been using sticks since splatoon 2 because I have a switch lite so motion controls are just impossible for me to use and I have tried motion controls on my cousin's switch during a challenge, but since my hands are pretty shaky it just makes it really hard to see and aim, I use sticks a +4.5 and became a charger (and stringer) main just for fun and I'd say i'm pretty good for a S rank in the negatives.
As someone who plays on stick controls and have about 7% of prochara power. (I'm actually not lying I'm just not on leaderboards yet bc I'm so used to wrecking people in rank war) I think you should start on -4 if your trying to get steady, and pretty much as calm weapon you can be good at, otherwise your probably gonna flop, but as a stick control player for 4-5 years, I never been able to afford an actual controller..
If a controller with gyro is the only thing keeping you back... I sympathize you. May you somehow get a better controller so you can play the game as god intended 😉 (this is a joke, play how you want lol)
@@Radi0Active01 day 1, obviously i still struggle with aiming and movement (never used the y button to reset my aim before). but its easier to track enemy players than with stick, im a charger main. i still use stick to move my camera when not in combat
I think the majority of us know this by now, but are just too unwilling leave our comfort zone. I've been telling myself I'll get around to learning it eventually for 3 games and almost a decade
I am an stick control player. Not bc i played other games that use sticks. I just have really shaky hands every time i hold it. With sticks i got to level 51 :D
I have played many other stick control based games before splatoon so when actually finally playing, the motion controls were/still is super nauseating and rather frustrating to use in my opinion. I absolutely love the idea of it, but it will never be a thing that I get use to (i also just turn my sensitivity up to the max for stick controls and tend to do rather well in the matches I play) Now, in salmon run motion controls seems better there for quick turns to get the eggs in the basket, but with max sensitivity it kinda replicates that for me
I used stick for seven years. Got five stars on squiffer with it and then thought maybe I hit the skill ceiling with it and switched to motion. It’s been pretty good! I think being good at stick helped me acclimate to motion better
I find although I can't turn as quick, shots are more consistent because the aim isn't moving at all as a result of sticks, also I don't get cramps from moving my arms around frantically trying to live.
@@Radi0Active01 btw, clash is like the beginners weapon followed by dynamo in terms of learning how to stick aim, so i found it funny those where the weapons you tried
I've been using stick controls for like, the past 600 hours I've poured into this game, been playing it consistently since launch and have a full comp team, but now that i've upgraded my set up, I think I might finally be able to learn motion. I am dreading it, motion feels so jarring, but I mean, I play a backline, so being able to actually reliably use my one-shot sounds pretty nice
As a stick player, this is so true 👍 (i get motion sick really easy so its basically just a better experience. Better then taking a half hour break after every game lol)
I played only stick controls on every mode in splatoon 3. I played lots of salmon run to get all 999s in all maps, and got top 5% badges on big run and eggstra work. I did managed to get a two star weapons on some weapons with luna blaster of two kinds and explosher wins many times with stick controls.
when i got splat 3 i forgot the game used motion controls so i changed to sticks since i was used to other shooter games without motion. (im now playing with motion) but my only "flex" was beating the story modes after alterna level with stick controls 😭
As a stick only player, i think theres a specific other reason why I'm like this other then difficulty getting used to motion controls: i almost exclusively play in handheld mode, as in 99% of days ive played on my switch i dont use docked mode. The idea of motion controls is a lot worse for me when it moves what im trying to look at
I used to play stick because every other game i played was analog and i wanted to feel superior lol... all of that came crashing down with that one target shooting level with the squiffer in splat 3
I’m a stick controls player (I’ve been playing since the launch of Splatoon 2) and I have my sensitivity to max (Stick sensitivity 5) when I play. (I grew up playing games such as Plants vs zombies garden warfare, which is stick controls only.) With Splatoon 3 I tend to take advantage of main weapon strafing and moving my character one direction while having the camera movement go along with the character. I also heavily utilize jumping to increase ink spread and heavily moving my character left and right in both humanoid and swim form) I do better with explaining via visuals of how I play vs explaining how I play with text though, but I hope this can help you with some tips/ideas on how to get better at stick controls if you ever want to try them again.
My adhd is so bad i litterally cant use stick contols, its so god damn slow i end up not being able to shoot correctly, plus i alr hav my sensitivity high bc its super slow. Motion controls have made it so much easier to play on my switch ppl question how i cant play a game with it on. Plus i dont hav a pc & im alr much better a fps games with a mouse. But since i cant affor a pc i had to play on switch & played Warface for a total of over 600hrs bc it was free & i didnt hav much money to get other games. Anyway ppl u dont use motion contols plz tell me ur secrets
the absolute jumpscare i got realizing i was in the match at 14:41 (roombus) anyways i used to play sticks when i didn't have a switch and would play my partner's copy of splatoon 2! for some reason, i found rollers significantly easier to play with sticks and haven't been able to play consistently with them outside of salmon run since i learned motion controls
I use sticks because motion doesn't really work for me. My hands are so shaky that even if i have the sensitivity turned all the way down, it's still really hard to be precise. I've tried motion controls multiple times, and it was just physically uncomfortable. Sticks let me play without always having to be in an awkward position.
Great video again, Radi! The quality of your editing just seems to get better and better with each one. I kinda relate when you said the key is to adapt, and the best way to do that is brute force. Also it's kinda funny at that last part of the video going on the rant about how "Clash will save me, clash is my savior" because it kind of reminded me of some kids in the back of my class who do nothing but play clash royale and make SURE that we hear everything that's going on. Also, your sub count went up AGAIN this channel's growing fast, and it (hopefully) will continue to do so. o7
I strive for improvement, so thanks for the compliment. The kids in the back of your class playing clash is crazy 🤣. Yeah, channel's had a few quick growth spurts in the past 6 months. It's crazy to think how small it was a year ago. Thanks for continuing to tag along!
I learned to play Splatoon with stick controls because I spent many hours on long drives playing story mode, and if I had motion on, every bump and turn would flip my view around. (I did however, learn to use motion, and it is objectively better and more precise.)
I also played sorry mode (and now side order) on long car rides. But I just suffer through the bumps and turns messing with my camera. I'm too stubborn to play stick controls again.
Early on, you mentioned Y being a bit useless with sticks, but that isn't quite true. You can use it in conjunction with a Squid Roll or sub strafe to turn around quickly, or at least more quickly than you would by simply holding the stick to one side. Pro tip from a stick player lol
Someone else brought that to my attention as well. I had not considered that during the video, but it probably would somewhat work. I think it's a bit janky though.
@@Radi0Active01It's definitely a little jank and not always useful, but it's saved me a good number of times and even helped me get some really cool-looking turnaround one-shot kills with Wiper Deco lol
I think if stick movement were as smooth as they are with motion there wouldn’t be a big issue. I don’t know why it’s not as smooth since using stick on motion should be the same as without motion
I'm using stick controls since 2020 and joy con grip got x in every mode in 2 and 2400+ in the tentatek division and 2300 in the Takaroka division I'm using the octobrush and it's not hard to play with sticks
I have 1,034 hours in this game only with stick controls, I’ve been in S rank like, 4 separate times including the current day (due to rank decay) and was at S+ at one point. Watching people who only play motion try sticks is funny because, Yknow, they’re not used to it.
I used sticks for a long time but had the same idea as you to try the other method. Spent a week on motion wasn’t really a fan but when I went back to stick I had forgotten all my muscle memory. So now I’m a motion control user. 😅
I am both a sticks and motion player. I got both e-liter scope and splatterscope to 5* before I swapped over to motion. Now I use them interchangeably depending on the weapon. Though, overall motion controls are far superior because of your ability to have very precise control and movement. Ggs for trying sticks for a week, it’s a good challenge
Fair. But would you consider trying it for a bit longer JUUUUUST in case? As long as you like the game your way. The game feels completely different changing from stick to motion and vice versa.
I mean, I did realized that, but it's pretty unreliable where you'll end up facing. Maybe it can be mastered though. But if someone is willing to master something like that, they should just learn motion ;)
Motion controls in splatoon are better than stick controls in splatoon but they're both still bad in Splatoon. Something about Splatoon's motion controls control a lot worse than other games with it, and even a lot of games that don't naturally support it
I've noticed, that I just strafinmg more to correct shots when usings sticks, but it would seem that the correction is in the turn of the camera with motion controls
I use it in conjunction with motion, which only allows left and right movement. I did not use sticks exclusively where it allows vertical movement with stick as well.
I think you should use -5 sensitivity. It was easier for me but its kinda slow(not slow slow but still) if that doesnt work for you, then practice from -4 - 5 until you find a level thats comfortable for you :)
It's very context dependant. Comes down to preference in terms of ease of use. But I believe skills are fully shown through motion of you take the time to learn it.
I have put about 1000 hours into stick controls in S3 (+5 sensitivity) cos I like playing after smoke sessions and the motion + my monkey brain can't compute how the up/down aiming works. if there was up down on the stock as well when motion is on I would use it
As a professional stick player. Motion controls on joy cons really suck and I tried motion and it just did NOT work out. It felt like there was this signal interference. And it just didn’t feel right. With sticks I can also play in any position like laying down and my wrists don’t have to be pointed at the screen. Also to answer your question as to why anyone would press the Y button is because it allows the camera to zoom quickly if you want to do a 180. also as a stick player I DO have precision. Having played for over 600 hours of Splatoon 3 on sticks I notice my hands make a ton of micro movements to line up my aim. So like it’s all instinct.
@@Radi0Active01no actually. I just checked and i have it on 2.3. (Tv) I prefer to be able to move the camera quickly. That’s why my thumb does micro adjustments all the time in rapid succession. Instinctual aim. (What’s funny is that I used to be terrible at this game as a kid) oh and on handheld I have it on 3.5 (probably because I have less of a field of view as the screen is smaller) the only weapon being a problem with sticks is chargers. That’s pretty much it. (Pencil being an exception).
I am baffled you have precision with that high of stick sens. Accuracy maybe, but precision? Of course I only played for a week. I'm sure it'd get better with 600 of sticks, but that would be counterproductive for me to try that 😄
@@Radi0Active01 just checked the difference between accuracy and precision. (Precision is how close each shot is to eachother on the target, and accuracy is the actual area itself.) Yeah you’re right then my precision isn’t too good, but I have great accuracy. I’m actually in S+ rank and have fairly good knowledge of the game. Solo que just sucks.
Accuracy and precision are frequently used interchangeably, so I understand how you have good "precision" (accuracy). Nice work. I bet if motion controls didn't have as bad of motion delay, it would be easier for people to adapt to it. Glad you can make the most of sticks though
The only reason why I use sticks is because both my wireless controller and joy-cons have drift. The joy-cons are unplayable (you can’t move at all like it keeps going all over the place and the camera moves like crazy) HOWEVER the wireless controller isn’t as bad so I have used motion controls rarely but u can’t use them properly cus my character KEEPS DRIFTING UGHH. I’m also clearly broke to get a new one so I have a wired controller I got for my birthday (yay) so I’m obligated to use sticks.Anyways I really can’t use them and I’d really like to. End of story :/
I know people encourage others to use motion but honestly, i CANNOT use them, its not causw i get motion sick or anything, its just incredibly hard imo 😭
As a stick main, For what purpose do people go like “oooh fun challenge to use sticks” and hate it, and most ppl i seen (havent watched the vid yet, wont blame you) tend to blame sticks being bad and go “never again”. Sticks can work if you just get good, this game doesn’t require perfect mechanics to be good anyways
Switching to sticks after that many hours is what makes it a challenge. The reason most say "never again" is because most are motion players. I did a small poll, but about 77% of players are motion. It works vice versa as well. There are people in the comments saying they'll never try motion again. I'm not trying to diss your choices. Sorry if you took it that way.
Your answer is in your first statement. If you were used to motion controls like most splatoon players, then you would probably also find them annoying or difficult.
I use stick and I usually get 6-10 kills with flux and I have over 200 wins with flux using stick because I hate gyro controls I don't hate people who like gyro controls
I've used +5 sensitivity with sticks since splat 1 and have never deviated and win at least 85% of my ranked matches so seeing someone struggle so much with sticks is...interesting.
@@Radi0Active01 I dabble in X rank but usually I just like to play salmon run and normal ranked and I guess the best reason to how I’m more used to sticks is because I play A LOT of shooter games that use sticks so I guess it’s just muscle memory :)
