Back in 2016, Apple released the original, budget iPhone SE, a hugely popular phone at the time due to the familiar design and low cost. However, all these years later, is it still usable for a week in 2021? Last week I decided to find out!

I think a 4 inch screen is too small for what we do now.. crazy how the SE chipset is still completely usable in 2021.. it’s the same as the 6S and there’re loads of people rocking those. 👍

@@K3zz21 well, for me at least, my phone has replaced my laptop and I know I’m not alone. So it’s social media/RU-vid, internet banking, casual gaming and even iplayer at times. In fact, it’s pretty much replaced my TV, radio, camera and sat nav too.

Great video Will! I currently do own an iPhone SE and an iPhone 12 Mini, and I keep the SE around as a media player, and also for when I go the areas that may be slightly risky for electronics (the beach, crowded cities, public transit, etc). It’s a great little phone and honestly, if you’re not gaming or watching videos, it’s amazing value still.

I used and had the original iPhone SE since it came out and it’s crazy how capable of a phone it and comfy it is for 1 handed use , recently finely updated my iPhone SE to a iPhone 11 and damn you can definitely feel the upgrade

Boy me too I now bought a 11Pro new for around 780€ with 256gb. Trust me it blows your mind. I had the old SE with 32 GB for years now. Still love it though 😁

I have an iPhone 12 Pro but every now and then I take my old SE or 6s out for the day as I love the nostalgia. I do like the home button with Touch ID opposed to pulling your mask down or typing in the password on the 12 pro when out and about.I think you should do another video on the 6s. Maybe an SE vs 6s comparison in 2021. Keep up the good work.

It's a little wider and definitely heavier, but jumping from an old SE to the 12 mini was a very smooth and easy transition :)

I owned the SE. A great small budget iPhone that outperforms any budget phones I owned. I currently own an iPhone XR and it’s my daily driver. I handed down my SE to my mother!!!

I have a 12 mini and I just bought an og se for $60 just to do it because I think it’s kind of just nostalgia for me to see it laying there. I remember EVERYBODY in highschool owned it. Even just a couple years ago when the 10 and even the 11 came out people still had the se just because it was easier to use secretly in class. It’s the perfect size to hide in your hoodie pocket and pull out just a sec to change music or text one handed.

My iPhone SE is still great. Only issue is the degraded battery that completely dies when ambient temps are in the 50s or colder. It's still snappy and the camera is good.

Watching on my sexy iPhone SE 2016 😎 my daily driver! Switched from my XR to this baby because of it's size and weight. Got the battery changed for approximately 25$ for an original one. It still runs like a champ. Battery life for me is decent and I'm mostly near a charger at office. Enjoying using this beauty - hoping so much it will get iOS 15 🙂

I have been android user since 2011 and always wanted to use an iphone and SE is my first time trying iOS / apple products (Secondary Device). I kinda enjoy using the phone , the form factor and camera is great considering how old the phone is . Still figuring out things about iOS but definitely a great device for those who want to use iphone for the first time...by the way great Vedio 😃👍

I remember my iPhone SE as more of a companion to my computer than something I used a lot. It was way more a phone for people who don't use a phone much than a phone for the frequent user.

I’m with the Xs and 5s. I’ve used the 6s previously for a few months before switching to the Xs. The chipset is still good, but the screen is a bit too small at times. Still, I love the design and this is the reason why I will get the iPhone 12 Mini in two years time.

I really enjoyed your video... like always!! :) Like you said, it's a great alternative to avoid using your phone too much. I currently have iPhone SE 2020 and i'm quite happy with it despite the bezels bEiNg tOo oLd fAsHiOnEd aNd NoT cOoL iN 2021.. We need to be realistic with our needs and if you don't need a powerful device or the latest model, maybe with that remaining money you can get something extra like a smartwatch or a pair of airpods!

Great video, thanks for sharing, amazing how good Apple are at giving updates for older phones. I have a 2020 SE as a spare phone. My main is a Note 20 Ultra and I actually find they complement each other. The Note is a beast but the SE is sleek and great to take out and about or when walking and wanting a smaller footprint. And the camera is good too

Still have my Original se and currently running iOS 15 beta 8 without too many hiccups….every now and then i pop my SIM card in this thing and run it as my daily driver for a few days just for old times sake. Definitely takes some getting used to since I normally use a 12pro daily but this was a phone a loved carrying when it was brand new. The looks and feel of it was a still is premium.

I just bought an iPhone SE for $100 and replaced the battery and screen which costed $50 and for a phone that costed $150, it works surprisingly well. I use the iPhone 13 mini as my daily driver and I love it. But using the SE for just a little bit kind of makes me want to do this challenge as well.

@@hks6546 The SE with a new battery gets about 6 hours of screen on time for mild use, like watching RU-vid, social media scrolling, messaging, and web browsing, mostly on WiFi. With the 13 mini on a new battery, I can get up to 9 hours when doing the same tasks, at least when its battery was new. So the 13 mini definitely has a MUCH better battery life compared to the 13 mini. But considering how old the SE is, it's surprisingly decent.

Not on iOS 14. Great it’s supported but even with 98% battery (I got the 128GB on clearance from John Lewis for £250 for an iPod). I tried it for digital minimalism with just messenger apps! Charged 3 times a day!

Contrary to the majority of the people, I have a thing for smaller phones and I owned the 1st iphone SE for 4 years. Gave it away last year though but I knew it would still be usable since it's still getting OS updates and still perform my needs out of a phone. I'm currently thinking of giving up my XR with the new SE released last year.

I actually DO recommend people buy this in 2021…IF they want that really compact form factor. Now that we know it is getting iOS 15 and can be picked up for under $100, it is an absolute steal for its value and performance IF you want that classic compact form factor.

I do. And I did. Just bought new one. It's tiny, the camera's fine (we don't see the 12billion megapixels of the crazy ones today) and it has a headphone jack. I spend more on earphones than I do the phone and I want them attached! I can't even hold the bigger phones safely. What use is a 12 when I can't hold on it?

iOS 15 did make my phone laggy and touchscreen is less responsive often leading apps to make jerky movements and cause me to make accidental clicks. Doing a factory reset didn't help much. However, after the latest updates, the phone is a tad more responsive but still slower than iOS 14.

I am using iphone SE when ever i go for walking exercise. Easy to carry not bulking or big and i dont have to worry on my small pocket as well as my small hand. Still reliable and compact specially when in this covid pandemic we are using face mask so no face id.

I use my iphone se on a daily bases! Great for my hand size, and it gets things done. The only problem I have is the home button, and finger print not responding fast enough if I need to call or text someone, and it would freeze occasionally but other than that it works and i don't see myself upgrading soon until the phone burns out.

Mine works decently except the power button doesn't work and the battery dies in cold weather (temps in the 50s and colder). it's great to use around the house

@@jzen1455 you can replace the battery at a phone repair shop along with the Touch ID button. It’s not expensive and your phone will be a good as new after. The SE should be fine for another 1.5-2 years of use so it’s worth repairing.

@@Bendaak I had the battery replaced at a local shop in January. It was only $25 with neighborhood discount ,and it only took 30 mins to replace. Battery health is still at 100%, lasts all day, and it's faster now.

@@jzen1455 good to hear. The SE is an amazing device and you should keep it until it’s unsupported by Apple 👍🏻. I have a 12 Mini which is perfect, I used to use the SE also so I’d advise you to move to the Mini for your next phone.

My Pixel 5a died a couple weeks ago, so I put my SIM into an old iPhone SE (1st gen) that I had sitting in a drawer, thinking I'd just use it as a temporary phone while I shop for a replacement. I was shocked to find that not only did this little thing update to the latest iOS (15.3.1), but it actually runs pretty smooth and works just fine! I'm still using it two weeks later. I've enjoyed using the SE1 so much that I've now decided to get an iPhone 12 mini or 13 mini (instead of just getting another Pixel).Such a pleasure to use this little phone as my daily driver.

regarding your battery usage, i guess you should have inserted a valid SIM card to test the actual battery life, since the signal from the network is consuming the battery too. just saying... great review man!!! keep it up!

I tried to use mine for one full day and and the battery has seen better days but It lasted me half the day but luckily I always have a battery pack on hand with a charger and I charged it through out the day. And my daily driver is an iPhone 11 with a battery case. But I’m getting an iPhone 12mini on Monday. (I wrote this on 7-aug-2021

Still have this small beast. It's really fast. Small nice and beautiful but yeah the battery is really bad i have 90% capacity left i think it's not so bad. I even just have 3 application on my phone, but battery is draining fast. Maybe because of update on iOS 15.7.2. I'm not sure 😌👍

@@triforcelink I went to the Apple store to get the battery replaced, but they said it has water damage, which would have cost an additional $200 to repair. I may attempt to replace the battery myself, so I can use the phone for another year or so. Right now, my battery health is at 73%, and the battery dies in cold weather. It didn't completely die last winter. I think it's a combo of age and possibly due to the update to iOS 15, which I'm not a fan of.

I updated it to iOS 15 and it’s fine. I want the additional features and I’d also like to use apps such as Netflix, Disney+ and RU-vid along with banking apps. If you do not update your phone you lose access to those apps and the phone quickly becomes useless. Safari doesn’t work as well either without the updates.

Nope, the iPhone SE (2016) is still getting updates, and I've gotten iOS 15 a couple months ago. My phone is now laggy and touchscreen less responsing leading to more typos, accidental clicks, and apps acting erratically. I'm thinking of switching to iOS 14. Also, my battery just started completely dying when cold. Before the iOS 15, the battery drained faster but didn't completely die. It could just be a coincidence though. My next phone will either be the iPhone 12 Mini or Pixel 5a. I just want whichever will last the longest. My first phone was the Nexus 4 that I bought in 2013 and used until late 2016 when the charging port broke. I used a similar cheapo LG 7 phone for a lil over year then bought the iPhone SE in early 2018. Which do you think is more future proof, iPhone 12 mini or Pixel 5a?

The se first gen still works in 2023 but it’s no longer supported by the latest iOS, so it might be a couple more years before it fails to run social media apps. Im gonna miss those old devices.
