I had a whirligig as a toddler in the 60s, it was my favourite thing ever and I could play with it for hours. `It mysteriously disappeared one day and none of the adults in the family had any idea what happened to it...

Si, what a great adventure you guys had. You certainly had luck in the muck with the 1746 George II and the pewter mug. I cannot even give enough compliments for the upcycle detector lamp. It is amazing, creative, educational and adorable with the added little cheeky worm. What a splendid video. Thanks for brightening this Sunday morning!

In the mid 1950's , when we were children ., Our Dad, (Born 1905) showed us how to make those whirly toys, with large buttons . Brought back some fond memories.

Thanks for a childhood reminder we made whirly gigs out of a large button and string at my mamaw's house. I am now 73 years old! she goes back to Welsh ancestry! She was my first love!

I am 70 year old male and regarding the whirling you found .as a child we used to play with a plastic version bought or found in a 3 penny lucky bags. It would give us hours of fun and we also referred to them as cheese cutters.thanks for the memories. James in Liverpool

As children we used to get the waxy cardboard out of the coffee jars, decorate them and make our own. The decorations would make patterns when spun. Good fun!

My Dad used to make whirligigs for us, out of Kraft Dairylea cheese boxes. We played with them for ages. I've made them for my great grandchildren, from Laughing Cow boxes, and the children were completely unimpressed, lol. How the World has changed over 75 years.

When heating pewter you have to heat it slowly to allow it to soften all the way through. It split because you heated it too fast and the heat had not penetrated fully. Try a heat gun or place it in boiling water to do a gradual heating.

Whirligigs are definitely addictive. 70 years ago in Oregon I made mine from mother’s big coat buttons. Played with it for hours. I make tgem now for the children at Renaissance Festivals.

The spinning string button brought memories of dad’s U S Navy service. He gave me a large button from his pea jacket to make the same toy over60 years ago, loved that hum!

The snake shaped belt fasteners were still being made in the 70s as i had one, they were attached to elastic belts often worn by children to hold up their shorts. they were/are still used on some masonic aprons.

My dad and his friends would make whirly gigs out of tin can lids and battle each other with them. Winner was the one who cut the other guys string. He would have been 90 this year. Cool find.

I made Whorley gigs out of big buttons from grandma’s Button Tin. They make better sound if you use a button With four holes .. I’m 71 and wish I could find that darn beat up old Santa Claws Tin❤😅

That Norwich coin is super interesting, i was born in Norwich and really didn't expect to see that pop up in the river Thames, what a mad find, almost can't believe it, 1600's too oh my gosh get in!!!
