People with disabilities and long-term health conditions will be expected to look for work under Government reforms of the UK benefits system.
Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Mel Stride said the proposed changes will help individuals, while also boosting the economy and labour market.
Speaking on Jeremy Kyle Live, Adam Gabsi from Inclusion London says he feels 'let down' by the Government as a million people on sickness benefits could be forced back to work.
"The focus has been put on the wrong people here."

There is still prejudice and stigmatisation towards those with mental health illness in this country, unless you have suffered real depression and anxiety you cannot fully understand how debilitating it is. Support and treatment is almost non existent, so sufferers are left to cope on their own, often with dire or even fatal consequences. It is not an easy illness to treat and there is no fully successful treatment, it will always have a lifelong adverse effect to some extent, and may require repeat treatment or therapy. Much better treatment and access to treatment is required if the government wants a healthier, more resilient workforce.

I dont want these conditions i want to move onto the next chapters of my life but im trapped. Im now on a 7 month waiting list for ADHD medication that is hopefully going to help me and make me better. None of my mental health is my fault but this country has such a harsh and bad understanding about mental health they look at people like me and deem me a liar or scrounger. Its so unfair. The work capeability assessment is run by people with only 6 weeks training and they specifically target people to refuse benefits, these people then go on to a court of appeal/tribunal to have the decision overturned by the court the DWP hardly ever attend because they are so cock sure that they will win their case against them but they rarely ever do, how much is this court/tribunal process costing the tax payer for decisions that are made wrongly and aggressively in the fist place by a company hired by the goverment to cut the amount of people on benefits? These companies hired by the govermentn are failed comnpanies in the USA now active here in the UK.

There is about 1.2 million people in the UK in wheelchairs alone never mind all the others with mobility problems, people that just had surgery that will need months to recover, I myself was a passenger in a bad car accident in 1997, we hit a brick wall at 60mph and I ended up with 7 metal plates in my face under my eyes and around my chin and jaw, my nose was broke lips were split wide open I lost all my front teeth and most of the others were chipped and cracked, my lung was punctured, spleen ruptured, liver torn, my wrist was badly broken with metal plates in it now, my hip was broken femur was sticking out side of my left leg, my knee was broken shin and ankle too, had metal pins and plates all the way up and down my left leg and my foot was pushed through the floor of the vehicle so my left ankle was cut off, I still have my toes but no heel bone, the surgeons had to take a muscle from my back that left a 2ft long scar and wrap that around my ankle plus several skin grafts from my arms and legs over several years to finally patch it up. Now half the skin on the sole of my foot and all around my left ankle area is scar tissue, I cant walk far on it as its painful and splits and bleeds, my ankle wont bend very well only 35% of normal range of motion and my injured leg is 3 inches thinner than the other. I cant build it up as I cant stand on it for long and the thin scar tissue on the sole of my foot will never be able to take much, So just moving around the house is hard for me. I go back to podiatry every few weeks as the dead skin builds up so much it splits and bleeds on its own without it. I have had a ulcer on the scar tissue the last 2 months and its not looking any better, I have to see nurses every week and week compression dressing keep my leg elevated as it has reduced blood flow due to all the damage it has. And by look of it its either going to take months to heal or ill end up having to have another skin graft on it. And this is an injury from 1997, 26 years ago so its not really going to improve now I am mid 40s and going grey and turning in to a old man. I had to have permanent stitches put in my back in 2015 as the scar tissue ripped under the skin and my back filled up with blood where I had the muscle graft and now I cant raise my arm over my head or anywhere near it without causing pain, just folding clothes for a minute or so and it feels like I have been punched in the back and it aches for quite some time after. When I stand up it only takes a minute or so and the scar on my ankle that's a huge area 19 inches long and 10 inches wide starts to go red and purple, it aches and throbs as blood travels down the leg but struggles to get back up, and its the same when I am sat in a chair it just takes a bit longer to start to hurt when I am sat down 10-15 minutes at most is all I can sit for then I need to raise my leg which I do by sitting on the sofa with my leg up and I can pretty much feel the blood flowing back up my leg as soon as I raise it. So what work am I fit to do from home? I have passed the fit for work assessment every 3 years since it started 10-15 years ago, I have letter from the surgeon that says I am not fit do do anything that involves being on my feet or even just walking about and I still might have to get my leg amputated below the knee, the first year or two after that would be really hard even to just get around the house. and there is no way I can sit in a chair 6-8 hours a day either typing or using a computer and phone as I cant sit in a chair long without having a sore back and my leg throbbing and wanting to explode until I elevate it again. I live on my own and am pretty much housebound, just getting up to make something to eat and sitting down to eat it causes me pain so I feel I am not fit to do any work from home and ill fight them all the way with it. I have got so many scars from over 400 stitches all over my body from that accident and that's just the stitches on the outside u can count, my body is a mess and I deserve to be comfy and pain free, not having to sit at a computer or phone at home 6-8 hours a day in a position that would cause me pain all the time. I mean if they are going to make people in wheelchairs work from home doing something like data entry sitting typing in numbers or something repettetive and boring all day long that's not really going to do much to improve their mental health or give them a skill to use in life is it, How sick disabled or injured to you actually have to be to get sickness benefits because by look of it you have to be pretty much dead.

They talk as if all the jobs available are suitable for everyone. Many jobs are specialist jobs, many are labour intensive, many need certain skills, many are zero hour contracts, many are temporary fix term contracts, those that are left are few. Care work appears to be one of the largest crying out for staff but you can't have disabled or people with mental health issues in those positions. So it is disingenuous to say there are millions of jobs available as if all unemployed are suitable for those jobs and just lazy. Big tax fraud and the wasting of billions by the government on dodgy deals is much worse than some people exploiting benefits.

The problems stem from people claiming pip on mental illness grounds such as depression. This was not why the disability benefit was set up by Thatcher under the Heath government in the 70s. Anyone can claim mental health issues. It's difficult to contradict them. People with genuine mental health should be diagnosed by a specialist doctor. Then get help with benefits. All claimants should be examined properly by a team of doctors not untrained assessors. It's now pot luck. Or who can lie the best.

A lot of ableism in people today. I don’t think some realise that there are lots of invisible disabilities as well as disabilities that come and go whenever it please which are called flare ups. Flare ups can mean that a person is doing completly fine for like hour or for month or even years then out of the blue, usually triggered by stress or what not can really struggle to do anything. They might be able to do minimum or not even get out of bed. But ableist people are quick to assume about another personals disability because yesterday they ‘saw them playing tennis’ or whatever. You have no idea what that persons body is going through. Just because they ride a bike today doesn’t mean that never suffer from movement and or pain

The problem is the investment just hasn't been there. There is a major difference between sanctions and helping someone find a suitable job. The job market is vast and trying to narrow down jobs someone can do is difficult not just from their needs and availability but also if they lack experience and qualifications. If you're going down this path staff needs to be better trained in helping disabled people find the right job and the ways of getting that job. Personally I would advise against sanctions but help those who are disabled who want to try and work. 1 on 1 support and I would recommend using the education system giving access to free meaningful courses. There also needs to be stricter punishment towards employers. As someone who has to wear medical boots I was expected by a employer to paint my boots because they had a red stripe down them.

Totally agree with Adam Gabsi. The country is not ready to promote disabled people back to work one way or the other. I experience this myself as a disabled person. I have many disabilities that stops me from travelling far, like Adam in the video. This means I can only work locally (very part time) or from home (Part time too, but more hours). But after a year of applying for jobs (over 200 applications - this in mostly in 2023 - 2 work coaches, workshops in how to write CVS and letters, various interviews) I have not been able to get a job whatso-ever. Most companies are not ready to take on disabled people, even if they claim they do (I have been discriminated 3 times already in the past year). And working from home is not easy to come by UNLESS you are willing to travel to far-off places like London or Edinburgh (Edinburgh is 3.5 by train for me) to have a weekly or monthly meeting. This is not going to work for anyone with mobility issues, unless they actual live in the city. So, there you have it. The other thing is the level of benefits. Now, I don't expect the government to pay Disability Benefits up to a level of a working person, but to let people basically rot away in tiny bedsits and sent them to foodbank because of rising prices all around, is not exactly wonderful either. Of course, I want to work to earn extra, but it is not going to happen if people look down their noses when I apply for jobs and there is very little provision for disabled people to participate.
