I love the honesty. Too many people have actually anxiety and depression and don't say anything because of the way society may think about them. Props to you for being so open.

When my C-PTSD was at its ugliest when I visioned myself driving into a brick wall never opening the curtains was not able to read anything itnwas so hard because I couldnt concentrate on what I was reading it really hurt my head, I just stayed locked up in my dark garage that only had electeicity at night during the day I had battery opperated flashlights all over so I could see. Nobody knew I was in there and I felt saft and no windows to see my reflection in a window which scared the hell out of me all the time I couldnt sleep either and not a soul understood me. It was deviatating

I have a brother who is schizophrenic. So I know what you are trying to say because my brother went thru a lot of criticism and had a lot of accusations of drug use before he was diagnosed. And for many years after. He is ill. He is not lazy or stupid. He’s sick. And I get upset when he’s mistreated. It’s sad. It’s hard. I feel bad for my mom because she won’t be able to die in peace. She will die worrying about him. She will die begging me and my other brother to make sure we will care for him. He can’t work. He has very little social skills. He’s never been away from my parents. They watch him like a hawk. He’s never been on the streets wandering or put away in an institution unless he’s been out of control. He’s in his early forties now. He’s calmed down a bit. But he’s a cancer survivor and has been hospitalized for a lot of other health issues. Some people can’t catch a break. Life is hard and at times it’s very unfair. I will never criticize you. It’s not fair that anyone does. And I can’t believe anyone would. If so, they have a serious diagnosis themselves. 😘♥️

A lot of people with serious mental illnesses such as bipolar depression or schizophrenia self medicate and it has the unfortunate side effect of allowing others to dismiss their symptoms on drug abuse. Also, since drug abuse is also a mental health issue, even dismissing that as a character flaw is pretty creepy. Hope your brother gets good treatment.

In my opinion conditions like chronic depression and anxiety are not a sign of a sick person but the result of human beings being forced to live in a sick world! Depression can be a chemical imbalance, a reaction to a loss of some kind, but more often it's the result of an injury caused by another person. This can be hard to overcome, but time and prayer too can help these injuries to heal.

I grew up with a schizophrenic older brother. He was the reason that I became a mental health nurse. He is my angel and was was one of the kindest people that I ever knew. He is dead now ( died from a malignant brain tumor) I believe, but for the grace of God, that his diagnosis could have been mine. I am much more compassionate with my patients because of growing up with him. It takes courage to be transparent and open. A huge risk. Thank you for sharing. You are a blessing ! May God bless you always.

Hi I've only just stumbled across your channel. Well done! You are so brave and inspirational! I also suffer with mental illness, depression and anxiety and know exactly how hard it can be when people don't understand it. I am 50 now and feel like I still have to hide it from people. I have confided in a few close friends but on the whole I "pretend" to be "normal" or "put on an act" every day just so other people feel comfortable. Mental illness is still not talked about enough or understood enough because the people who are lucky enough to not suffer will never understand. Sending my best wishes and hope you carry on bringing awareness to these misunderstood illnesses. Love and hugs xxx

This really hit my heart because it made me feel less alone. When I'm sad, it's an acute emotional reaction. When depressed it takes me twice as long to get out of bed, it affects my concentration at work, I cry for no reason, eat more or not at all, and even a bright day looks gray for days, sometimes weeks. I subscribed like two videos ago but this one I really appreciated. Thank you for sharing.

Katie, You are right on your description of society's overall view of get over with it about anxiety and depression. I've had depression for thirty years and have tried every med out there also saw a psychologist for awhile, read every self help book. I have PTSD from a rape in my 20s, I'm now 59. Now I'm on ABILIFY for me it's been a wonder drug. It helps me stay positive and get past some of my anxiety and depression. It's great of you being upfront and sharing such emotional private parts of your life. Please do keep sharing and thanks for providing a place to voice my illness. Hope that makes sense. @chanzma1
@chanzma1 7 лет назад
Linda... Beautiful reply, even in its complete despair. The support we give each other is akin to the life blood we REQUIRE to survive. Anxiety does suck. It also took a big chunk out of my life, but I am pretty stubborn and have not yet given up the fight to say it has ruined my life. I'll never be the same. I'll never be able to do the things I did effortlessly before. But I won't let it "ruin" my life. It has changed it in every conceivable way, but it's definitely not ruined. I won't let it win, and neither should you. After long enough in limbo, there is something awfully powerful in choosing to rebrand yourself and become a different person by your own choice. We have to learn to live within the confines of our disease processes, so it only makes sense that we all find a way to start anew. Find the best version of yourself that you can muster and put one foot in front of the other. One day, one hour or one minute at a time. Whatever it takes to just keep going...in whatever way you can. My diagnoses are Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Major Clinical Depression and Schizo-affective Disorder. I worked as a nurse for almost 20 years, and knowing all that I knew about the disorders didn't prepare me one bit for the battle of my lifetime. God Bless to all!

I wish more young people would be as honest as you are about daily life because all they see in the media is shiny, happy people and think that is what their life is supposed to be like all the time. I don't normally tell people I'm a therapist, but if any of your viewers are in TN, I can see them online for their anxiety/ptsd/ocd and depression and grief issues. Or there are some affordable online platforms nationwide for folks that can't go to an office or afford traditional therapy. Just normalizing it like you are doing goes a long way towards helping people cope. Kudos to you.

Many people are struggling with personal issues in their lives. I picked up on your personal distress some time ago. Your rapid-fire conversations gave me a hint that your brain is constantly racing. Sort of like not being able to relax and slow down. I feel for you. Part of feeling "normal" lies in immersing yourself in activities that you thoroughly enjoy and that immerse you in peaceful satisfaction. It is an ongoing struggle, but you are not alone. I do hope you are in/have been in therapy. It helps with understanding how and why we feel different, and suggestions to make our lives more satisfying. Wishing you good vibes as you forge ahead. Life is a journey with many twists and turns. Chin up, and find something to smile about each day. You got this.! 😊❤️

Wow..you’re so inspirational. Not only do I appreciate you saying these things, but I appreciate you talking about your own issues and not wanting sympathy. When it comes to certain situations I always feel like my anxiety makes me less of a person because I cry when I’m so upset or angry. People make me feel so weak when I have an anxiety attack and I agree, it’s lonely. It’s hard to talk about. Thank you for talking about it. ❤️

Thank you for sharing this part of yourself. Yes, the stigma is horrible! I have 2 daughters several years older than you that continually give me the list of "just". Please keep sharing these things so I don't feel totally alone.

I definitely relate to everything you say. I've felt misunderstood all of my life. I'm embarrassed to acknowledge my weakness but feel better to know that perhaps I'm not entirely alone feeling this way even though I'm lonely. Thanks for sharing.

I don't think it is a weakness at all. It takes plenty of strength and courage to keep enduring and going on. You are not alone. Many people have the same or similar problems.

I’m the same. And I really love that you shared this. I only just found your channel but I’m glad I did. People need to understand the difference between sympathy and empathy. Sympathy is seeing someone stuck in a hole and saying “poor you.” Empathy is climbing down into the hole with that person, and trying to see it from their perspective. “It feels really dark and lonely down here. Is that what it’s like for you?” Hope this helps someone in the comments to empathise with someone in their life who might be going through something.

Thank you Katie for sharing this with me. I say me because it always feels like you are talking directly to me. I am going through a similar illness. I've actually stopped my car on the way home to write this as I just finished listening to you. You are brave, smart and confident and I look forward to learning more about you in your very entertaining videos. You have inspired me, even before this video was posted. Again, thanks and take care.

I love this video. I have family members who deal with mental illnesses and growing up I really didn't understand. I appreciate people like you being honest and therefore fighting the stigma. Because of people who put the truth out there I've been able to reconcile some relationships that were broken because I wasn't able to understand them when I was young. Your younger viewers are so lucky that if they're in the same situation your videos can help them understand themselves or loved ones.

Katie, thank you so much for being brave enough to share this. So many people do not understand us and think we're faking something or exaggerating, or other people misuse and abuse the words related to various illnesses which in turn minimizes them. You hit the nail on the head with everything, especially the loneliness factor. Thank you so much for this. Hope to see you on the road someday. Xoxo, Kate

Congrats for being brave enough to admit it! I am 55, suffered from panic attacks now for 25 years. The shrinks label me with depression/anxiety. The meds haven't helped, but I do need anti anxiety meds just to not have panic attacks all the time. All kinds of triggers like freeway driving, busy places like food courts, movie theaters, concerts, crowds of any kind...makes me want to stay inside most of my life which leads then to agoraphobia so you lose jobs because youre afraid that something will happen if you leave the comfort and safety of home and go to work. Got put on disabilty but told by family members to not give up so you get another job and can only make it a few weeks til youre fired again so now you don't even have disability to rely on....most people think youre violent because you have problems like this and that's just not true. The stigmas are so wrong. My own family doesn't believe me and they have witnessed my panic attacks which by the way have me on the floor violently shaking like a seizure, foaming at the mouth, etc...so many ambulances only for them to just say you are fine, just panicky....you need to relax more. I've tried everything, I've read everything, one shrink said just pick up a new hobby? UGH. I have noticed this recently though...if I totally immerse myself in a book, has to be a complete mental fill up I call it, I do start to relax a bit. Just felt like sharing and ty for sharing also. Brave girl!

Christa ray 29 i’m not sure how many of Katie’s videos you have watched, but regardless this comment is incredibly out of line and judgemental. it would be hurtful to say this towards anyone, not just her. just something to think about

I just found your channel today and I am so thankful! I have a very similar story with social anxiety, racing thoughts and days where I am just struggling to get through. So important to share our truth but very hard to do. I appreciate you for helping me and others realize that we are not uniquely impaired, that we have purpose for life ( maybe not all the time, but from time to time) It’s ok not to be cool, calm, collected and happy during our “times”. Life is a constant mix of struggles and strength. You are helping us all by telling your truth. What a blessing!
