I have a land rover discovery 5 R-dynamic on loan whilst my Land Rover is getting fixed and it's got what I believe is the best engine type in the modern Land Rover line up.

The D300 is a cracking engine. Love it. Nice noise for a diesel and great mpg for such a big car. Down to south of France managed over 35mpg on autoroutes. 40mpg is not unachievable. Done 6000 miles in one now. Very impressive.

There is literally nothing impressive about 35mpg. My Audi does 65mpg.

Doctor - you need the “Metropolitan” discovery, just a nice step up from the Hse and the Hse lux. I drive a lot of JLR products in my work and own a RRS supercharged V8, the V8 is the best engine I’ve ever had but is impractical for me and so my next car is the D300! You are so spot on with your analysis 100%, D350 is good but you’d ask why as the D300 does the job just as well. Keep the faith!!

Great video - many thanks. I have owned a D300 R-Dynamic Velar since April 2023 and it is a great car. We drove to Croatia and back this summer, 3,000 miles over 2 weeks and it didn't miss a beat. 35mpg on the twisty roads and over 40mpg on the motorway, although the autobahns were very tempting and at 100mph you certainly don't get anywhere near that! However, since returning, we have had a compressor failure in the suspension unit and it was with JLR (Virtu, Yeovil) for 2 weeks and off the road for 3 weeks prior to that as I tried to find a dealer with the capacity to do the work. All fixed now, but big note to anyone buying one; go for the JLR warranty!!!

Thanks - sounds like a great trip- I agree JLR warranty is an essential out of the 3 years!

Aussie here. On my second Disco 5. Previously one was the V6 diesel. My new one is the D300. It's a bloody cracking motor. Buttery smooth, reasonably quick off the line, sips fuel like it's trying to lose weight and makes great torque. By most accounts it appears to be a lot more reliable than the old donk too. About to buy my third one soon with the upgraded power. Just on the 2 litre, issues on that thing have been so bad over here that there are Facebook groups dedicated to 2L engine failures. My opinion on what the causes of issues are twofold : 1: Small displacement and high pressure turbos. LR are trying to push far too much power out of far too small a motor., stressing the components to the max, particularly under load (EG: Towing a heavy caravan. So many engine failures over here related to towing). If you compare, say, the 4 Cylinder in the Toyota Prado, that diesel donk is a 2.8L with lower boost and has proven far more reliable over a long period of time. The Japanese tend to favour lower power outputs and higher displacement because most owners want their cars to last longer than the average European buyer. 2: Service intervals that are too far stretched. The computer in my car says I don't need to change the oil for 37,000kms (23,000 miles). Come on!! There is NO WAY any oil is going to last that long without breaking down or smudging up...or both. And we know why LR stretch these intervals. It's pure marketing. Less time spent at the dealer getting your car serviced = convenience for the customer. A great selling point. So long as the car lasts the warranty period why should LR care? Judging by the way they are handling claims on engines here THEY DON'T. They're literally conditioning the buyer to move out of their cars sooner to buy a new one with a fresh new warranty. The whole thing is a scam,. Needless to say, if you're after reliability there is no replacement for displacement. But maybe one day LR could do something about the two big issues that continuously plague their cars: Defecation and Depreciation. Take care of the former and the latter will take care of itself. Just my .02pence worth. Cheers

Had Land Rovers all my life , apart from the Series one the Disco 4 is the best vehicle to come out of Solihill.

Had a 2017 First Edition Discovery with the older 3.0 engine and it never missed a beat, solid engine and covered over 100k miles in 4 years. Now changed to 2022 Metropolitan with the D300 and again it is spot on. Effortless performance, and economy around 38mpg, that’s with towing and a heavy right foot. Had a loan 2.0 for a couple of days last year and it was awful, gutless and slow. Such an underpowered and highly strung engine for such a large car.

The 2.0 ingenium is renown for being artful. Historically discovery’s have had 2.7 and 3.0 l diesel engines so of course the D300 would suit the car better due to the size

I’d imagine the only reason there is no PHEV discovery is that they want there to still be a third row, and the battery in all the PHEVs takes up where a third row would be, hence the Disco Sport PHEV being 5 seater only.

I came here to make same point; that is the answer . I am a fan of the 2.0l ingenium, it’s a sweet engine, that delivers great economy for high mileage

I don't have a Disco but I have a 2015 RRS 3 litre SDV6 and regarding fuel consumption I am averaging 40.4 mpg. That's daily driving with a 18 mile commute each way. Also used for longer trips. Just done a week in Cornwall and out of interest reset one of the trips to see how it would do and in the week covered 1187 miles and averaged 38.4 over the week.

Rivian R1S 0-60 in 3.0 seconds. I have no regrets selling the Disco 5 for the new Rivian. Same split tailgate. Same hydraulic suspension. Loads more storage. Same 4-wheel drive.

I have the 2 litre my gearbox went....and the gear selector has broke recently so mines in the garage like yours. I had a velar and the r dynamic one felt more responsive. I wish I had bought the 3L might look to change it

My old man picked one of these up in the really nice orange , he previously had a cls350 which had 1 issue in the 9 years he had it , discovery’s air suspension wasn’t working properly within a week

Hey Doc, thanks for the video, really helpful! Pleeease help me to decide what LR to buy, made in 2018-2020. I will buy a second hand one and I can choose between 2 liter and 3 liter engine (not d300 but td6 hse), they have between 70k - 100k km). Some have warranty. What engine should I buy? What to check on a sh LR? Really appreciate your clip :) I could also stretch to buy a Velar. Would it more reliable?

Personally I would never go for a LR product with the 2 litre engine - renowned for going pop with the overheating issue. Just swopped my 2019 Disco 5 3 litre HSE Lux for a new Disco 5 D300 Metropolitan and so far so good and a lot smoother and more responsive than the V6 - handling is a vast improvement over the previous gen

I refer you to my comment from a couple of months ago "I wonder of the newer versions are worth considering, after the change over in engines, something like the D300 Disco 5?" :)

You question why it doesn’t come with a hybrid. Probably due to low sales. It doesn’t appear there is a facelift in the near future. Looking dated instead.

Why is it that all JLR products look odd at the rear end, as if the design team went out on the lash on Friday afternoon leaving it to the kid on day release to finish the job?

Just realised that you are a medical doctor as well. Are you a proper plastic surgeon or a needle guy? I just wonder because Im working in a hospital in mainly reconstructive and hand surgery, but Im really thinking of starting my own business (yes at 52yo), to do mainly smaller cosmetic interventions, as it seems to bring the same amount of money with less work (at least here in germany)... Have a nice day. Driving a 10yo S500 and my wife an Old rangerover.

Doc, did I understand you correctly in this video, will you have to PAY for extended warranty when it expires for this Discovery Courtesy Car D300 from the Garage, while yours is waiting to be fixed. 😮

Cars like the discovery shouldn't have engine like 2L, is just to big and to heavy car, well the 3.0L is not great from LR anyway, I like them disco 4 and 5 but snapping cranks is absolutely a joke

No the landrover 2ltr engine is a crock of sht simple the last discovery had the crank problems if landrover got there act together got reliable engines and over all build a better car they would be the best in the world
