I agree! I would love to see more stories like this. These kinds of projects are the ultimate expression of love for technology. Anything where people do grass roots hardware or software development should get more recognition and this would be an AWESOME new regular segment! Authors of Emulators, Pi Hackers, Case modders, people who support libraries that are used in large software that we don't often think about! etc. Let's go Linus!
Not that I don't agree he's an awesome guy, but I imagine there's some self-serving behind what he's doing. He probably expects this project to help him with scholarships, which it almost certainly will. He's probably just more concerned about saving $100K in tuition than in profiting directly off of this product.
@@imnotdavid7954 You can open source your project and sell it as a finished product. It's a business model that is used by a lot of very successful software companies It actualy serves your business, your community finds bugs and help you fix it, your customers get a really nice product

I was playing VR at an arcade centre once in an enormous room with a “toy” weapon which was tracked. It felt surreal. The immersion was from another world because you had something in your Hand which was rendered in game and you were able to look at it and feel it.
@@swas_chak Not OP, but I think I can explain. Basically, they had an object with tracker markers on it, probably using base stations and vive pucks, so that it could calculate the object's position. From there, a game designed for it could simply render a model in the object's location that is the same shape and size
I once had this but they used an airsoft weapon as a base to blank fire but with electronic blowback when you pulled the trigger so you could actually feel the recoil of the gun itself.
This is dope as hell. And for reasons beyond VR too. I've got one hand that I can only extend half the fingers on due to irreversible nerve damage... servo gloves like these could take that problem away completely.
take this to some hospitals they might fund the project, this can be used in telemedicine for when doctors remote control robot surgeons having real time feedback is very helpful, this can also be used for vr surgical proceedures for both irl and training

"Is it for sex things?" That's the most honest and reveling question ever asked regarding VR haptic feed. (Which most avoid like a suspicious looking sock at your friend's house)
The answer is "in a few years maybe". This prototype seems to handle rigid-body objects only. The combination of breast physics (a subset of soft-body dynamics) and VR haptic feedback is quite the undertaking. I've been out of the loop for the last 4 years, so correct me if I'm wrong.
@@TWiiZA sounds about right. I see a bright jiggly future for skyrim VR. (mostly since they have the most relentless modding community) if they catch wind of it they will make it work.
@@TWiiZA The only problem with this is that the haptic gloves we have today may have a hard time accomplishing feeling different textures. Something I came up with (and many other people probably thought of this too) was something to restrict muscle movement and stimulate parts of the body and brain to make the sensation of touching something that’s not their. This may seem like an over complicated haptic glove, but hear me out, you would be able to feel different textures. You could restrict movement in a way that you feel light and bouncy objects or stiff, firm objects. Maybe even wet things or dry things too. With the help of stimulating your brain too, it could help your brain fill in the gaps and give you a full experience. Of course, it’s not just restricted to only your hands, you could also have parts of your body like your arms, legs, feet, or anywhere really have access to feeling things that aren’t their. You would be able to feel the little individual grains of sand in your hands, or the water on you, but with water, there would need to be temperature too, which is a whole different complex thing. Then you would also need a full body suit, something to stimulate your brain, and people working on this, and time and money, but if this did work, this would probably be one of the first steps to living in virtual/augmented reality. This is all, of course, a thought. I don’t know if it will go this way, but yeah. I don’t know how this reply segued into my idea of a full body haptic suit, but there you go. I've been following Lucas and his project for a little bit, but I'm super excited to see you guys feature him and his work on this channel. I can't wait to see where this goes, but I'm absolutely in love with the fact that he's willing to share his progress, success and failures included, with the world.

@@StormCrusher94 Well they can only do that by coming up with their own design since everything in the open source community is under an open source license... that's why the corporate patents are often worse as they're merely inspired by the originals but with built-in planned obsolescence etc.
@@StormCrusher94 And usually also puts in a shit ton of money and extra R&D into it to take it beyond prototype stage into something that people can buy. Very VERY few people are willing, and more importantly, able to make something like this on their own.
It would be amazing if Linus used his resources to help streamline and manufacture these gloves. If you made them available for purchase at a decent price then this would be the next big vr accessory that everyone would want. This kid has serious gifts and I’m sure he will do amazing with or without help from LTT, but I think it would be a great partnership
Idk if Linus has that kind of wealth, his company is still pretty small and manufacturing something like this would cost millions and millions just on startup alone. Would be cool to see though maybe if Linus invests at least partially in its development but he certainly can’t be the sole investor
This is the stuff that sets LTT apart from other techTubers. You guys are doing videos about straight up weird stuff sometimes, but other times, I get excited for $60 VR gloves because that means that VR tech is coming down to earth. Really Cool stuff.
It's already down to earth, 300 bucks for the Oculus Quest 2, it's an immense amount of bang for your buck right there. Contractors with CoD maps in VR is absolutely incredible. Not good as the first game to try in VR, but man, once you have your VR legs and you get good at a VRFPS, there's no way back to FPS on a screen from there, at least for me. Haven't played flat games in damn near 6-7 years at this point, aside from deck building roguelikes on my ipad.
@@demofighter You won't really see anything close to that price point in the upcoming years, as Facebook will buy off any close competitors or just make it impossible for them to compete. Facebook/Meta now owns, and will continue to own, VR for the foreseeable future, it's a sad fact, but it cannot be disputed... :/
I've been following Lucas and his gloves for a while now, super happy to see someone with such a big stage give him a spotlight to show off his work. I hope more companies will be more interested in this technology and invest more in VR, it's the future people, let's go!
I remember when Lucas first started posting about his first version and the subsequent process for improving the gloves, so awesome for LTT to bring him on to showcase how awesome this guys brain is haha in the words of my anti technology grandpa "he's one smart cookie"
honestly the physical part is kinda simple, linear servo attached to a small piston with hoses to small bladders at your fingertips, fill it with a low compressible oil that won't react to plastics, code wise anything but a binary touching object return might be the hardest part and finding space on the glove to fit the hardware
so glad he’s getting the recognition he deserves this tech could be huge, especially if meta or valve or another big vr company takes a similar approach to hand tracking and haptic feedback
@@ryukatana03 i hate corps with a passion but it's hard to deny that in terms of normalization and large scale productions they're our best bet. hence why meta quest was and is the best selling vr platform right nowy
Would love to see a new Series from LTT about "Makers" and the cool tech they come up with and maybe giving the projects a spot light to help them improve or gain traction

Before clicking this video, i thought to myself: "please let be him." Seeing this not only made me happy, it surprised me. I've watched the shorts and kept up with the videos, but i never expected to see a collab with linus. I know you'll go far. When i get into VR, being able to use haptic gloves that i can make myself for less than $100 will be the greatest new player experience ever.
Lucas seems like such a sweetheart. Glad there are still engineers like him who aren't just in it for the money, but t=for the progress of technology as a whole.

I'm insanely happy to see Lucas on here, there's so much passion among VR enthusiasts and I think it's really important for the medium that people see more of this, and less of Facebook's corporate applications. It can be hard to discuss VR as a serious medium in some spaces because a lot of mainstream opinion is that it's going to go the way of 3d TV's, and exists solely as a novelty that people enjoy for a little while and then shelve, because it can be cumbersome. People like Lucas are a testament to the passion that so many people feel for the medium, though. It's not for everybody, but it's definitely here to stay, and stuff like this is super exciting for the future of VR.

If it could just get like globally recognized the efforts of more big tech companies could create something amazing! sad most people just dismiss it as a novelty because it could help so many people live much easier and better lives.

The best thing about 3D printing is that kids and other home engineers can still innovate and build in their garage/basement. If this guy is making stuff like this while still at school, he has a bright future ahead of him!
I've been watching this project for months now and slowly working on making my own. It is an amazing project, and Lucas just keeps making new updates, and even announced that he is working on an omnidirectional treadmill as well, which will be really cool to see where that goes
I really don't understand that part though. He has an index. It's extremely immersive. You would have to be thinking about that it's just vr to be "aware" of it, or have some big distraction around you, like a automatic vacuum cleaner or something.
@@OutOfNameIdeas2 The Index is about as immersive as the quest 2 to be honest, they're scarily close in resolution/display, the Quest 2 can even be used completely wirelessly which is kinda a game changer for immersion, but has the disadvantage of no knuckles controllers. Even if you combined them both, you'd still be acutely aware that you're in VR, even if just because you need to be aware of where in the room you're standing to not punch the TV/monitor/insert expensive fragile item.
Amazing! Only suggestion I'd make is yeah, reduce some to forearm, use a baseball glove style (batting gloves) so people buy their sizes. And that should really do it based on the tech, besides minimizing the servos some. Once you have the basic glove(fabric) to then the 'feeler modules' on fingers, to then the outer glove to encase it all, it should be more or less perfect with then the arm guard as the battery pack & sync aspect of the tech. It'd look a little like a nintendo power glove, but amazing tech & ideas here to enhance.
i was watching videos about this glove a few weeks ago and remember thinking "Man this guy really needs to get platformed because the shit he is doing is going to straight up change the industry for people." Im glad to see he found that platform. Im soo ready for this to hit market for us no 3d printing plebs.
I'm only slightly worried about connecting software-controlled motors to mechanisms which could potentially pull my fingers in ways they are not meant to bend.
If this is the same glove and creator I've seen before then I believe he's stated that the motors can't actually produce enough force to cause injury even at full power. Could've been someone else though.
Linus, you should do more collaborations like this, bring more people like Lucas that are working at the frontier of some tech and give them a nice platform to show what are they doing. This content is way better than anything else you have done before.
This is amazing. I imagined a whole body suit like this back when I was a kid. Of course I never had the education or skills to build it, but it’s cool that we’re moving in that direction, if slowly.
It doesn't have to be this complicated, with gears and whatnot. I've been trying to give away a multi-billion dollar idea for ages just because I want to see it done
Inlay stretch fabric gloves with position sensor electrodes. Bam. Done. The electrodes would read the distance between each one in relation to the other electrodes and will accurately read the distance.
Never played VR seems like alot of fun in general, but seeing where the future is going for it makes me smile and excited for the future of gaming. Congrats to this guy too he's going places.
You should totally get one is life changing and you could use it as your own personal theater. Loved watching movies with it it feels soo... immersive. The cheapest and one of the best VR headphone you can get is Oculus quest 2. Its all in one headset so you dont need PC just wear and play and if yiu want to play pc games you can totally connect it with your pc and its only 300 dollar. With one deep catch... you have to sell your soul to Mark Zuckerberg

As someone who likes to fly helicopters in DCS I loved the feeling of beeing in VR, however, the million dials that you needed a mouse/keyboard for really broke the immersion. Until gloves are in a consumer friendly price/form I will be rocking headtracking and G9. But I cant wait for this inovation.
If you like that but would like the feeling of actually turning knobs/switches you should try VTOL VR. Granted it's nowhere near as in-depth graphically or physically as DCS - but still a lot of fun + immersive
@@TheWaluigiman1 I have a 3K Euro helicopter setup. Which is good. Or rather as good as it gets without it being in VR. The problem is when you have been in, VR you have noticed the true feeling of how impressive size is conveyed in VR.
For that kind of immersion checkout The Warthog Project here on youtube. He even said in one of his videos that he rocks his amazing cockpit in VR from time to time. If you are accustomed to the setup, you can "fly it blind".
@@TheWaluigiman1 I've been using a HOTAS for gaming for years. A friend is seriously into DCS and watched me playing ED in VR with the HOTAS and got a similar setup and loves it. Just be sure it is for you before you make the investment. A good HOTAS is expensive.
As a VR developer I know how incredibly hard it is to get VR across convincingly in video and I would love to see a follow-up video where you use LIV or other mixed reality camera tech to show it off!
Man, Lucas just impresses the hell out of me. I truly wish him nothing but the best in his future - and not just because I want sweet ass VR gloves in the near future.
This could actually have decent application in assistive technology. For example, if, due to an accident, you've had physical injuries to your hands or even had to have a prosthetic hand. By putting this on VR it could help with rehabilitation either with helping learn how to use your hand again OR learning how to use a prosthetic all in an environment that is safe to do so (i.e. you could break things and not worry about it). You could also adjust where you put the "force feedback" and even, with the right biotechnology, make it transmit directly to the nerves linked with hand motion at any point along the arm. Very cool.
My word... This just hit on a new LTT series. Bringing brilliant open source prototyping projects in and doing an episode like this. Then for a follow up, give 2 staff members 4 days and LTT knowledge and resources to produce the next prototype. It would be amazing to see how far you guys to go in a few days and massive reach.
This is that kid in engineering school that was selected to supervise the senior design class. Deadass he reminds me of these guys Chris and Thomas from my senior design classes. Wicked smart, teachers pet but still down to earth. Wish I remembered their last names so I could look them up on linkedin to see where they're at now
Finally Lucas gets to the big tech-tube!!! I've discovered his project a few months ago on thrill seeker's channel, and I was shocked it's actually possible. The minute I have the option to built those I will.
This guy and his Hand Tech Thingy reminds me of the guy who figured out how to use a Wii Controller for Head Tracking and showed everyone how do to it yourself and it's uses. Anybody else remember that? That was HUGE. This kid is amazing. Imagine having artificial ForceFeed when playing a game used to replicate an in-game driving wheel, handle bars, throttle & even brakes on a motorcycle. That'd be so amazing.
This is so cool! It reminds me of the sensor glove me and my teammates made for our Final Thesis for my Bachelors Degree and it's bringing back so many memories. Might I suggest that for weight and bulk reduction you can use Linear Actuator Servos instead of the rotational servos? I used them for our prototype and they work exactly how a regular servo would but with the benefits of having linear action. Iirc, the only manufacturers that make those is Actuonix. They're slightly more expensive, but they're super nice and they're Canada based. This was so fun to just watch in action, I hope Lucas makes more progress in the VR Space!

yeah, the moment I saw that I thought "too bulky, it should be pulled further up the arm" so it was cool to see his plans match exactly with my thoughts. Measuring out the wires for the fingers and minimizing the spools down to perfectly fit only THAT much in order to remove a lot of bulk would be a great way to lose some weight and some of the shake. With a gauntlet approach, you could make a flat box that goes on the bottom of the forearm as far up the wrist as is comfortable that's about the width of a small cellphone and about the height of a double A battery for all the electronics and for the electrical wires to extend out from. With a proper velcro strap at the top of your wrist, it would isolate the weight on your forearm and leave your hand weightless in the VR.
That was honestly a very cool video. Reminds me of that crazy audio setup that cost 35,000$ where Linus said he wouldn't cry (XD). Love these kinds of videos where you have the inventor/professional go through the item with you. Keep it up!

Been following Lucas and his progress for a while and love that he gets such a stage show these off. Eventually, and I look forward to it, these might become legitimate (and perhaps even threatening to some) competitors for those gloves that cost way more than your usual consumer wants to spend on.
