It is absolutely amazing in how small the homes were back in the day. First time i stepped into an old stone home from the early days i could not believes whole families lived in that small a space. We do still have some early homes intact here in Mass and owned by the historical society. I love visiting historical sites and getting a peak into the great past of eons ago. Love the finds and am jealous of you being overseas seeing all these great sites. Chill Bill and his wife are excellent kind hosts and awesome tour guides!

I've been watching your videos since at least 3 years ago and I've always wanted to invite you to my place in Italy but I never thought you'd ever consider making videos in Europe. My home was built in the 1400s and has lots of land around it. up to 25 farmers used to live and work there. I'm now in Japan for work but I always go back there as my parents still live that house. We've owned it since 1972 when metal detectors were't a thing, so it's never been searched.

When you showed the standing home I first thought of the three little pigs story. Straw, sticks and brick. I guess because of the thick walls of brick and it was still standing and then Bill starts talking about the wild boar in that area. Weird coincidence. The fireplace hearth was awesome! Nice finds. Bill is a character. Seems fun and genuine. He is also knowledgeable. Great trip. Thanks for sharing.

That's what I was wondering like what did they hang people upside down and have them dig down in there or just how did they manage that back in those days.
@johnmorgenthaler3611
@johnmorgenthaler3611 2 года назад
The way they were dug first the bricks are layered up to build about a four foot tall section of the well casing. Then from inside the casing You dig And hand out the dirt,you dig under the brick and slowly the casing lowers. The digger is protected from cave in and helpers at the top haul the dirt out .All the brick work is done at the top as the whole cylinder slides down the hole until you hit water. It’s truely simple But also amazing

It's definitely rare to see a "standing" colonial home in the woods of New England. The stone lined cellar holes make it, as do the chimneys occasionally, but these folks figured out that a log/timber home was the way to go when settling. Especially when all you have is what is around you.

I live and detect in rural Normandy. I have had several (too) close encounters with wild boar. I was head down swinging and something made me look up and a sow and her piglets had just emerged from a stand of maize just in front of me. 10 yards. It was like a mini fighting bull. I slowly turned round and made myself walk rather than run. (Pointless running. a middle aged woman in baggy wellies isn't going to outrun anything.) It was a big open field and I didn't dare turn around. just walked steadily and hoped the pglets didn't want to follow. Eventually got to a friend's house, about 400 yards away. knocked on the door and my legs were like jelly. lol Had some others but that was the most dangerous. Now, of course, we have wolves in our forest so that gives me pause. I tend not to detect alone in there anymore. I take hubby as a decoy (he doesn't realise this) lol.

You need a Platypus in your backpack. I'm guessing it probably has the 'holes' pre-made in it for a hydration pack like a Platypus. You can put any liquid you want in the Platypus but it would hold enough water that you could wash your coins and have water to drink without having to take anything out of your backpack or carry any excess plastic in and out of a hike. I highly recommend it.
