The Summer Flounder (Fluke) fishing was red hot in the hours preceding the arrival of a storm. Controlling the drift was key to filling the cooler. Supports my new book, Fishing the Edge - Techniques and Tales from Surf, Boat, and Kayak: amzn.to/3TQtFvq.

Hi John, great videos, great for for showing technique. Do you have any videos or maybe can you in future videos talk about how to identify good habitat for fluke. How to go about finding areas that are productive for those of us that make the occasional trip out, but never seem to find a live bottom.

It looks like you sacrificed some of your fishing time to take on chief netting duties but it kept the bite running smoothly and helped everyone else get more fishing time in. Plus it seems like you're honestly happy to see the other guys catch their flukes.

Went out on Saturday on the miss montauk, there was a pretty good pick of fish but it was really tough fishing, the current was very wacky and had to use a crazy amount of weight, anywhere from 12-16 oz sinkers and u still had to let line out pretty often to stay near to bottom, I ended up with 2 keepers for the day and my buddy was able to pick a full limit so at least we left with something but man was it rough jiggin those heavy weights all day lol
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 10 месяцев назад
I don't understand the need for heavy sinkers. What pound test line were you using and was it braid? We fished Saturday, 3 to 4 ounce in 80 feet at Block, or about 10 miles from where you were. After we limited we caught cod on 3 ounce jigs in 100 ft. We use 10 and 15# braid. We did not have a trolling motor.
@usobninja14
@usobninja14 10 месяцев назад
@JohnSkinnerFishing Crazy I know lol, Me and my buddy where both using 15 lb spider wire stealth braid and most people on the boat where using similar, everybody started out with 3-5oz bucktails and teaser type rigs like always but than after the first few drops everyone was scoping out all over the place in every which direction and the whole boat was in a constant tangle, so we were told bucktails weren’t gunna cut it and to put on heavy sinkers and chicken rigs so the whole boat switched over, I don’t know what was goin on down on the bottom but I started at 6ounces and worked my way all the way up to 12 and even with 12 ounces I had to drop line every about 10 seconds and people with heavier rods around me where going up to 16 ounces and still having the same issue, idk why we stuck it out in that spot the whole day but
@JohnSkinnerFishing

Wow. Funky currents for sure there sometimes. Glad we chose Block that day. Thanks for the explanation.

great vid as always. I'm trying to get input on the differences between the tsunami slow pitch and the skinner jig and bounce, and I thought who better to ask.
@John_Williams421
@John_Williams421 10 месяцев назад
Hey man I own four tsunami slow pitch rods, two of them are solely for flounder fishing, they’re slow pitch rods but they’re really nice for jigging for fluke
@John_Williams421
@John_Williams421 10 месяцев назад
They’re amazing rods for the price but I just recently got a jigging world rod which is a bottom fishing rod for jigging with gulp just like a skinner rod, the difference between the skinner rod and the trophy is it’s got more backbone than the trophy and a lot more of a stout rod black and butt to get a good jig with your bucktail, but a soft tip to feel bottom bumps and lighter bites
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 10 месяцев назад
I don't like the slow pitch rods for this fishing because the tip is too soft and it's hard to put action on the jig. The skinner rod has a parobolic bend with a nice spring to it and handles heavier weights well. It's also an awesome striper rod in deep rips, and is great for blackfish.
@John_Williams421
@John_Williams421 10 месяцев назад
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I totally agree skinner, it’s definitely not a flounder specific rod like your skinner rod but it gets the job done

Man do I need help using my trolling motor...you guys stay on the fish even if they're not keepers...what I wouldn't do to learn this...the only thing I do well is "spot lock"...lol
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 10 месяцев назад
It's easy. Spot lock. Drop your rig to the bottom and see which way the current wants to drag it. Run the trolling motor in that direction at around .5-1.0 mph, looking to see your lines slightly behind you. Put it on autopilot. You'll adjust power and direction with the tide and current, but that's pretty much it.
