I get asked a lot about car reliability in my car reviews. This video is meant to answer some of those questions. In this video we're gonna talk about which factors influence reliability, reliability myths. We're gonna talk about American cars, Japanese cars etc. And I'm gonna give my honest opinion on car reliability

i partially agree on this....some brands are known for design mistakes...the japanese are not known for this due to their conservative design changes. Jaywalker is a short term owner as mentioned (max of 5 yrs) ......the average joe who wants to make the most out of their 2nd biggest investment, they tend to own it for a long time(>5 years) , this is when brand reliability kicks in. the component/part reliability selection of the japanese is very strict( i've been in one of their suppliers). As Scott Kilmer mentioned , the engine and the transmission is really the milestone of the car's reliability. Ford reliability on transmission and turbo engines are so notorious compared to the Aisin and Honda engines. I am very familiar with Japanese design disciplines compared to continental and american makers.

sad reality though is most people easily gets attracted to all these bells and whistles and whatever gimmiks some car manufacturers are dangling before them sacrificing reliability in the process. =)

@@chubeelee2942 but i think not most people, these 80s and 90s generation customers are the buyers of both Honda and Toyota brands, that is why their re sale value is still the tops in the used car market. The reason why Toyota is still the best seller.

Spot on, bro! Thanks for getting this out there. I think another factor that affects reliability is how a car is used. If you drive it hard, or if you drive rough, it's prone to more wear and tear. As they say, love your car and it will love you back. But with project cars, it's usually a love-hate relationship. Hehe.

i've had experience also with a lot of cars but not from an owner's perspective. I used to live in NY and lived with a relative. He had a lot of cars particularly the luxury ones from Europe. 1 thing that I can vouch for is that Range Rovers are good with luxury features but not very good in reliability. A good example, was that we parked my cousin's Range Rover in the Bronx for the whole weekend, in Monday morning of that week, it was still untouched. I parked my in-law's '96 Honda Civic SiR for 6 hours in the same area, in the morning, the 3 wheels were gone, the hood was opened and the only they left is the single tire that had a clamp on.

This is bullshit, compare a bombproof Toyota Hilux or 70 series to for example a 2000 Merc. I bet the Toyota would outlast that European junk even IF YOU DIDN'T CHANGE THE OIL ONCE. the Toyota 70 series has a 25 year warranty in third world countries thats PROVEN reliability. There's a reason park rangers in Africa and governments use the 70 series to run around the bush and not a money pit pile of junk European car. I've owned many Mercs bwm etc and now I've moved to Toyota the difference really is manufacturers. Those over built euro toys are for wealthy people to throw in the trash once they get bored.

If reliability is extremely important to you, get a manual transmission vehicle (if you know how to drive stick of course). They're usually a lot more reliable than automatics, and you'll spend less for long term maintenance.

When I bought my Honda Fit, I didn't realize I was already doing what he was suggesting. My Fit went 7 years without issue, until now in 2023. My baby lived through 3 car accidents with me with one accident requiring my front passenger seat to be replaced. My dad had a 1999 Toyota Sienna and 2011 Toyota Tundra. He bought them all used, but last us quite a while. The van finally went wack in 2018. The Toyota Tundra is still running but was sold in 2020.

We have to respect his opinion. Its an opinion of a car enthusiast that has means to have multiple cars which he can use for different occasions, which normal people like me would never consider. I would put reliability as my #1 consideration, since I dont want to spend too much time on the car dealership CASA having my car fixed. I don't have a secondary car that I can use as an alternate to begin with. On the other hand he has the option to choose his primary reliable cars for long road trips and his unreliable yet flashy and luxurious car on short fun weekend trips. #sanaall

Another thing to factor in: “deferred repair and maintenance”. Commonly seen in old European cars, it’s one of the main reasons why people tend to crap on their perceived lack of reliability. Us Pinoys tend to cheap out on maintenance services, and hold off repairs until it’s too late…and expensive. My W202 C230 had about 20 years of deferred maintenance. The repairs were expensive, yes, but it runs so much better now. Still looks like it’s been detailed with sandpaper though. That’s why I call it the donkey. Looks like ass, but just keeps going.

Ford tried to do that thing where they just sold the same lineup all over the world, and it failed dramatically. The Japanese have figured out that to succeed globally, you have to sell cars made for the local market. That's why you don't see Fortuners elsewhere outside ASEAN. Hell, the Toyota's they sell here are Daihatsu's.

I'm huge into camping and sleeping inside my vehicle. There is a huge van life and camping market I think you could do well with if you include more content towards small cargo vans and such. Anyways, I run my vehicles all night for 8 hours while parked to get AC and heat on average 2 times per week. I typically keep my vehicles for 5-7 years and sell them after I drive them about 150k miles. That said, here are a few questions I'd be very thankful if you could offer some of your amazing experience: 1. I'm considering purchasing a small compact cargo van. I'm considering a 2019 and newer Nissan NV200 or a 2019 and newer Ford Transit Connect. Although I'm a loyal Toyota and Honda fan, my options are very limited and these small cargo vans are great for my needs despite their reliability is so poor. I plan on bringing any vehicle I find to you to be inspected and maintained. Do you feel both are poor considerations and which of the 2 have a more reliable engine and transmission? 2. I'd love to purchase a 2021+ Toyota Sienna however the price is way too much for Sienna's and their ground clearance is too low. I've found many people lift these vans for light offroading in they use Journey Off-road lift kits. Does lifting this van cause a reduction in reliability? Many like myself have this question about lifting a sienna as there are no other AWD van options out there. 3. Are there any maintenance tips you'd suggest for people like me that run their vehicles overnight while camping for AC or heat other than the traditional vehicle maintenance? 4. Would idling a vehicle overnight for AC or heat be better or worse mechanically on a hybrid vs non-hybrid vehicle? Which would offer better reliability given that type of use? Much appreciated!!

Quick question mga boss, if a car ba is a product of badge engineering from a long time, does that warrant relibaility? For example, if a car that is newly released in the Philippine market is badge engineered from a China branded car and has been in their local Chinese market wayback 2013, does that guarantee that the main engine issues and feature flaws of that new car has been addressed?

Owned 200 cars? How many times you’re changing cars in a year? And since when have you been driving dude? Driving it for few days doesn’t give enough experience with the car to have a reasonable basis. And do you even realise the financial strain and stress of frequently changing cars? If you’re Jay Leno that’s not a surprise. But if you’re an average joe, that’s hardly believable. It’s like claiming you’ve lived in 150 countries in a year when the longest you’ve stayed in each one of them is 1 day.

Everyone sais bmw is unreliable... yet Ive owned a 270k mile 3 series.... a 200k mile x5 still running, a z4 eith 140k still running... minimal maintenence on ALL OF THESE.... starting to think toyota is really overrated and overpriced.

You didnt explaim how you get to own 200 cars. Whats ur work to financially support your claim? If youre in your 30s that means 20 cars per year at least if u started at 20.unless your super wealthy i dont know how you did it. Iba yung buy and sell ah. Registration should be under your name. Iba din yung rental cars. On my part, now that i have navara and innova. Iba talaga built quality ng toyota compared sa nissan. Fit and finish palang palpak na nissan. Emblems not snug. Engine eating out oil which is normal for d23 engine but im not fond of. Oil gets easily dark too. Yung gd engine ng toyota kahit 1 year ko na gamit still cristal clear. And who says nissan aircon is the best.mas malamig ang sa toyota. I still put extra fan sa navara ko kasi kulang ang lamig.

Most likely yung generation ng Navarra nyo Sir is when Navarra was bought by Renault. The quality of Nissan have gone downhill eversince they were bought by Renault last 2001. The 90's Nissan can go toe to toe with Toyota in terms of quality. They were as popular as toyota as Taxi go to brands back in the 90's, which tells something about their reliability.

Toyota mindset that Toyota is the only reliable brand, when you search in youtube,Toyota has the most number of recall, toyota advantage is the parts availability that includes cheap china fake parts or class A,yeah still reliable specially the engine but not the only brand that you can say reliable.
