I feel like a lot of you probably sensed that this was coming but we're moving back to LA. Houston did not work out for us. The house did not work out for us. Homeownership has been a struggle.
I'm very grateful for this experience because I've learned a lot of new skills and even learned a lot about myself and what I can handle but it's time to tap out.

My favorite thing about your channel isn’t the “struggles” it’s you overcoming them. I always appreciate how raw and genuine you are. Paying off 200k worth of debt, Starting your own business, getting married, AND buying a home Watching you do this is so inspiring! And you don’t sugar coat it when it gets hard. I’m glad your safe more than anything! If homeownership didn’t work out this time around there’s plenty of houses and a lot more life for you to live to give it another go.

I’ve related to your home ownership videos so strongly this year, Aja. I’m literally writing this as electricians are rewiring our 80 year old home so that ours too will NOT catch on fire 😅 During our own home repairs I’ve thought about how much easier emotionally it would be to fix up a home if we didn’t have to live in it during the fixing phase. Living through the countless repairs makes getting to that place of safety and comfort more difficult. Since it sounds like yall are keeping the property for now, perhaps with some distance and time it will get to a place where the houston house starts feeling like a true home. In the meantime, how fortunate that you CAN move back to LA?! I know it may feel disappointing/not ideal financially but I see it as a win. You have the financial means to get out of a situation that is not serving you. The Aja I started following years ago would be proud of how far you’ve come ❤

Aja, just wanted to say I’ve been here since your student loan days. I also paid mine off in a similar fashion. Last year, January 2022, I was looking into buying a house as well. I was being pressured by my realtor to move fast because that’s when the interest rates started to go up. I put an offer in on a house by myself. After the inspection, I met with the inspector. The house had TONS of mold in the attic, along with a million other tiny issues. It was a hack job. A part of me really wanted to buy it anyways, just to have a home, but I backed out. The seller tried to stop me backing out, but luckily my realtor knew what she was doing. After that scare, I’ve stuck to renting and stopped looking at buying. I’m sorry you’ve gone through this experience, but at least now you’ve tried it and know that renting might just be better for you personally! That’s what I took away from my experience at least.

Learning what doesn’t work for you is just as important as learning what does. This is just a part of that learning process and I know you’re going to grow from this and that next step, whatever it is, will be even better. It’s not failure to accept that something doesn’t work for you. The biggest mistake would be to stay in a situation where you know you’re unhappy, unhealthy and unsafe. Wishing you and Brian a happier time back in LA ❤

Aja! It’s one thing to go thru first time homeowner issues, and it’s another to not feel safe at home. When somebody attempted to break into my uncle’s house, he got really paranoid afterwards. I completely empathize that you got spooked. Brian is also not going to be with you physically most of the time, so I understand that that makes you more vulnerable. Glad you are choosing peace of mind over sunk cost. You taught us a lot about money and I think this is one of the major ones for your audience - having enough money gives you more wiggle room to choose. You can choose to not be stuck in a bad situation. Wish you well Aja! And I wish you peace of mind and happiness ♥️

Hey Aja, I just wanted to say I really appreciate your realness. I never think you're being negative. I'm so sorry you have been going through so much crap, but something positive to take from this is that, by documenting it, you are helping people feel less alone. I get depressed watching other people's perfect vlogs about their "perfect" lives. It's hard to remember that, for the most part, they are being fake. You're real. I never get depressed watching your vlogs, because they are authentic. And lastly, I experienced a break in a couple of months ago, and I'm still not over it. Thankfully my bf was awake, heard them trying to open the back door, woke me, we turned on all the lights and they ran off, but they did manage to open the door. Any time my bf is not here and I am alone at night in the house, I cannot sleep. Every noise triggers me, even though I know it's my pets or pipes etc. The fear of an intruder when you are a woman alone is terrifying. Thank you for sharing your story bc I completely get it. I've spoken to people who haven't experienced break ins, and they just don't get it. Hopefully soon we can relax in our own homes! Love you!

Aja, our experience as first time homebuyers was almost the same, it happens way more often than you imagine, it’s just that very few people are willing to admit mistakes publicly. I really appreciate you sharing this and show the reality that home ownership isn't always as smooth as some people make it sound. I'm sorry how much stress you have been having from this house as well as that guy trying to break into your house. That's just terrifying. I know a lot of people who dream of home ownership, but ended up not happy with their decision or turns out there were a lot of unexpected issues affecting their quality of life in the new home. People are resistant to talk about it, but this is why I love your channel. You talk about your struggles and how you address it and overcome it. I follow your channel because you showed that paying off student loans is possible. My student loan amount isn't as massive as what you had, but you really inspired me to pay off mine last year. You also inspire me to be a home owner someday, but I'm learning so much about the hard work and effort you put in trying to fix a home. I truly believe everything happens for a reason and when one door closes, another one opens. This is not the end of it and you're resilient, so I know you'll overcome this hurdle.

Hey Aja, so proud of you for listening to the signs from the universe, making such a hard decision, prioritizing your well-being, and sharing it all the while! Also I’m so touched by the love you and Brian share. Wishing you all future success with Houston and LA. Honestly, it might seem like a step back but sometimes that’s exactly the road we need to take to catapult ahead to blessings unseen. One time I had the most random car a**ident, zero injuries, and it was a financial setback but I took it as a sign from the universe to safeguard me from being somewhere else that might have led to a worse outcome. Don't give up yet. Honestly, those troubles seem to be typical of what house ownership brings. An old house brings extra challenges than newer houses for sure. Eventually, things will improve and you will love what you have overcome and learned along the way. On the other hand, ever since you bought the house, Brian began to get more work opportunities. So, you can also think that the house brings good luck for his work, if you think in the other direction. Also, the Heights area is a decent neighborhood and as others have told you, it should be generally safe. Also, it will have potential to rise in value in the future. So you should try to fix it and then see what that will bring. Anyway, best wishes for you and don't get so discouraged by this initial mishap. If you go through things for the first time, there is bound to be a larger learning curve. As time goes by, you will find that those are very typical problems of old houses anyway.

I've lived 5 years in a house that I loved, but didn't felt safe at night (for no particular reasons). 5 years of anxiety and bad sleep, plus the tensions in between my husband and I because i couldn't be left alone in the house. We worked so hard renovating this house, put so much money, and I truly loved it. But it wasn't worth 5 years of bad sleep. You can overcome lots of things, but feeling unsafe within your home is not one of them. Hope you're able to rent your house, and eventually what's you see as a bad financial mistake becomes an investment :)

Moving to a new state, buying a new home, dealing with first time homeowner problems is all hard but doing it alone I think is what made it even harder and the break in being alone (you would have been alone) is what broke the camels back so to speak. Of all the things I listed I've done same locations too LA to Houston its been suuuuper hard, I cant imagine doing it without my partner. There were times I wanted to quit and move back but we stuck it out (we cant afford buying in LA), it isn't easy but we had each other to lean on. If I was doing it alone you're dam sure I would have left Houston a long time ago.

The thing about the Heights is that these bungalows are older homes. They require a lot of updates and/or an owner with renovation skills. Had she moved to the surrounding burbs, the experience might have been different. Unless you’re someone who can tackle such work, buying a new build or less older home would’ve made more sense. I say this with much respect as having things not going how you hope is hard. This is a lesson learned. Nothing is lost. Best wish for LA.

I’ve been subscribed to you since your early debt days. I’m assuming maybe 4 or 5 years? I was in my early to mid 20s. Super long story but my “adult life”, starting at 18 has never been easy. Granted I was a part of that path but main culprit having zero mature support system, aka supportive parents. 12 years later I’m almost repeating my 3rd cycle of life with crippling debt, confused which “financial path” to take with the most outrageous gut feeling to take the make the most illogical choice. But this longwinded choice, with the hardest terrain, leads to my actual passion. & I finally want to pursue it. I’ve naturally a springy, excitable personality but life has hit me SO HARD, SO MANY TIMES, it’s also jaded me. I go thru these periods where I lose myself in the struggles when I oddly have a dreamer personality. I have always loved your channel because yours is genuine. It’s authentic. It’s transparent. Being able to see that an independent, smart woman is strong enough to show vulnerabilities, & yet you’re ALWAYS classy. It validates me & how I’ve had to go thru life. It makes me feel less lonely. I feel so hopeful when I get to be here & cheer you on & tell you how grateful I am for you to inspire me to stay with my vulnerableness. You’ve been a role model, not just for your successes, but foe your authenticity which is RARE these days. I am proud of you for fixing this house AND for being able to decide that this is not the home for you. I’m so happy to see someone capable of making the hard choice in thinking, “This chapter that I looked forward to for so long isn’t for me. I’m upset but I’m going to restart again back where I was & that’s okay.” I don’t even like saying restarting. You’re building ANOTHER chapter. I’m actually hoping one day I can bump into you in LA as I’m a resident there. Thank you for all your videos & outreaches on all different platforms

Pro tip from a mixed Native American smudging with sage (especially white sage) removes and clears ALL the energy both bad AND good. We always follow it up with sweetgrass because it fills up and restores the space with positive energy while warding off negativity.

I am sorry to hear how difficult your home owner experience has been. I would look into draining your hot water heater. It sounds like it may be percolating from build up in the water. It is recommended that the unit be drained once a year. If it is still making noise have it checked by an hvac professional. When hot water heaters go out they do it with a mess. It is better to replace before that happens if possible. Our hot water heater busted and flooded our garage and kitchen. I recommend this especially if it could break without you being there and cause excessive water damage. On another note I am a realtor in another state and financially it would be best to hold onto the house for 2 years so you don’t pay capital gains on the sell and recoup some of the costs of purchasing and selling.

When you said that they guy breaking your door down while you weren't there and other things were signs from the universe, it reminds me of something Oprah said. I heard it from her in the early 2000's too. Whispers are always messages, and if you don't hear the message, the message turns into a problem. And if you don't handle the problem, the problem turns into a crisis. And if you don't handle the crisis, disaster. Your life is speaking to you. "I say the universe speaks to us, always, first in whispers. And a whisper in your life usually feels like 'hmm, that's odd.' Or, 'hmm, that doesn't make any sense.' Or, 'hmm, is that right?' It's that subtle. And if you don't pay attention to the whisper, it gets louder and louder and louder. I say it's like getting thumped upside the head. If you don't pay attention to that, it's like getting a brick upside your head. You don't pay attention to that-the brick wall falls down. That is the pattern that I see in my life and so many other people's lives. And so, I ask people, 'What are the whispers? What's whispering to you now?'" - Oprah Anyway, glad you are safe and wish you guys well!

Houston is so wack, my whole family is here and if I could I would leave in a second. So always follow your heart, especially if you have the ability to. Thank you always for your vulnerability and for sharing.

Smudging is wonderful. As of recent I learned it gets rid of bad and good energy so it's important to burn lemon grass afterwards to bring the good energy back in your environment 🍋🌱

Good for you for going back home. So hard to make that decision but thank the heavens you are able to go back to L.A. I really your appreciate your honesty during this whole house drama. Bottom line: It just was not your destiny to live in Houston. *Hugs*

I’m so happy you’re moving back to LA. I could tell it was the correct decision-not just because I myself have to unhappily live away from LA for a while, but I could feel the wrong juju in this house. Maybe you can find a custodian/renter to complete the renos and feel out an Airbnb/rental sitch. Totally agree on the universe signs!! Listen to a recent money with Katie podcast on walking back a house purchase, it’s really gracious about facing the problem. ❤❤

Owning a home is a forever commitment that I’m thinking of just renting forever (currently I live in out family home and sometimes shoulder repairs). As a renter I can have a brand new/newly renovated home all the time. Sure I need to prepare rent money forever but I truly don’t think it’ll be that mre expensive than doing major repairs in the long run. If you have a single detached and not a condo PLUMBING and ROOFING will never not need repairs 🙃

Good for you!! I’m glad you have the financial ability to just cut your losses and go back! Home ownership sucks and just isn’t worth it most of the time. At least you learned so many lessons if you ever want to try again. 😊

I love and admire and respect the realness of this and your content. I am so thankful that you are sharing this with us because it validates so much of my and I'm sure many others' real world experiences. For a long-time, I felt so uncomfy moving from SoCal to the midwest, and I toughed it out for 3 years to get my grad degree and work experience. It's a distinct feeling to be able to just say, "You know what, I get being outside of my comfort zone can be positive, but I don't want to do it anymore, and I'm just not going to." And truly embracing it and accepting and owning it. Much love and healing energy to you and your family

Mental state is very important! If you feel unhappy there best to move. You did a great job renovating and repairing the necessary problems in the house. It is a very lovely home! Sorry that the house didn't work out for you and Brian . My sis lives in Texas and loves it. I'm on the East coast .Everyone must be ok with where they are comfortable being.

As a first time homebuyer myself, I would probably let all the renovations and fixing pass. But the attempted break in is a big no no. You should live wherever you feel safest so I’m on the same page with you in not staying there anymore no matter how much money and effort you spent.

You are very brave to admit "defeat". Many people would have tried to push through, making themselves more miserable and throwing more money into it. Not everything is worth the investment. Kudos on you for trying though, I know it was a goal for a long time. You don't know what you don't know, so don't feel defeated. It was very evident that you were stressed and life is too short to be miserable. I'm happy you will be happy in LA. Here is to new adventures and unexpected paths!

What an unfortunate situation :( I don't think you are being negative, you are just being realistic. Things didn't pan out this time, but you learned a ton about what you want for yourself/your family and about homeownership. 2023 has been a hellish year for a ton of us, but we are human and bond to bounce back if we keep trying (at least I try telling myself that 😅).
