Have you ever tried a spider plant in pon? I just got my second free baby, and since I over-potted my first one, got root rot and tossed it, I decided to put this one in pon. Crossing my fingers I don't kill this one, too!

I’m genuinely curious how you’re watering/fertilizing your spider plants when you have them? They are extremely sensitive to impurities in water like calcium. Living in a desert myself our tap water is extremely alkaline, and has a lot of present minerals, and I’ve found that using Stress Coat (without aloe included) works to combat the sensitivity to impurities.
@OttahPopKid
@OttahPopKid 3 месяца назад
Just to add context, Stress Coat is an additive you add to fishtanks to balance the water out and remove harmful minerals that will hurt your fish. They make a few different types of that product (aloe included helps the fish develop a protective barrier. The aloe with clog things up though, like a sprayer if you use that to water all your plants. (It won’t hurt the plants though, just fyi!)

I killed the last 3 spider plants I had. Managed to grab a little ‘un from a runner off the last plant before it shuffled off and so far that’s doing ok. I had great success with them when I was younger (in a south west facing, unheated room so pretty cold in winter). I grew up in a soft water area though so the hard water I’m using now could well be the problem. Going to try api stress coat from Amazon and a wide bowl to collect rainwater. 🤞

My spider plants look happy, but I don't know why. Some are next to a window, some are in dark corners. Some have pots with drainage, some don't. Sometimes I fertilize them every other week, sometimes every other year. The only thing I do intentionally is watering them when the leaves turn pale (and by "watering" I mean drowning them and hoping the roots won't rot). They even survived a huge scale infestation where I had to throw away most of the plants from that room - with the spider plants, I just cut off all of their leaves and waited for new, scale-free ones to sprout.

I am genuinely so shocked to hear that about your spider plant experience. My first ever houseplant was a spider plant and it grew so insanely well with so little effort than it gave me the false confidence to go buy and kill so many other types of plants 🤣 my spider plant I propagated from my mother’s spider plant and is currently overfilling a 16” pot. My spider plant is definitely plotting world domination if it ever makes it out of that pot. It just goes to show how strange plants can be and what some people swear works for them doesn’t always work for others.

I'm sure you of course would already know this, I'm simply commenting for those that wouldn't know, but Frydek specifically refers to the variegated plant. Frydek means variegated. The all green is Micholitziana. It must be way different with plant prices in the UK versus Canada, because alocasia frydek isn't very expensive here anymore for a decent size plant. Depends on the amount of variegation and the seller, but they have come down a lot in price in the past year or two ☺️ I hope the prices come down for you in the UK soon too!! I would definitely recommend getting a bigger specimen if you can!

Yep Ive struggled with silver sword for a long time but now for some reason ever since I put it on a moss pole it's picked up. So far so good with no thrips but give it time I'll probs end up with them on that cos I have them on other plants 😩 Same too with the spider plant....always crisping and looking unhappy ( even in self watering pot) 🤷🏻‍♀ But totally agree with you on begonias in semi-hydro. I have 4 diiferent types and they are all doing great since putting them in that set up 👏🏼😻 My Florida Ghost is constantly pushing out large white leaves before turning minty and she's loving life in my north facing window (Sydney) with a sheer curtain. Same with my Thai Con next to her...they are both in semi-hydro (LECA) and they are going gangbusters even now during our winter. Thanks for sharing your experience Emma 🥰

Grows like my pink princess. Leaves get stuck….don’t particularly like the growth pattern….wouldn’t but again.

.. Dearest Emma, that Begonia is a real Beauty ☺️ I know, because I've got the exact same plant and there's no one more easy than her 😊 it's an old plant, from the time of our grandparents and before them.. I got my 7 year old mother plant in a west facing garden door with upstairs balcony to shade the view.. She loves it and is growing as if she got paid for it (130cm.. So far).. The child are placed in front of an east facing window and she's getting huge.. Maybe I should try semi hydro, because yes, they are pretty thirsty 🤗 the Begonia Ice I can't find anywhere, or any other cane begonia, unfortunately.. .. I gave away both my silver swords.. I struggled for a very very long time to figure out what they wanted, but no matter what I did it wasn't right.. I loved the colour, but that's just not enough really.. .. I'd love to have a Florida ghost, or Florida beauty, but they are not to be found anywhere around here, so I will end up buying from the Netherlands instead 🤗 .. Spider plants are so easy it's crazy.. Only thing is, my cat think it's for her that I got it, so, they are in a hanger in my living room (above the coffee table) where she can't reach.. Usually it would have been outside at this time of year, but since the nights are constantly below 15 degrees, there's no way my plants are going outside.. And that's really sad because they love being outside during summer.. But not this year.. Got 2 pepperomia like yours in my kitchen window, south facing, and they love it, but that's the only pepperomia that I can get along with.. All the others I gave them away.. Certain types of calathea, but maybe it's because my cats use them as their private scapegoats when things are wrong (in their opinions)??.. .. Question.. Corms from Alocasia, when they root, what do you do then??.. Pot it or wait until leaf are showing??..

I have struggled with Alocasias. But I have found just the right spot for my Silver Dragon. It took a while to acclimate to its spot, but now it is pushing out leaves. I love it. I want to try a Melo and a Dragon's Breath, but I have to find them first. A plant that I have tried to grow more times over the years than I have fingers, is the Poka Dot plant. I am trying one last time with a tiny one in a terrarium. I 100% agree with you on Spider plants. I have stopped trying. I get them fairly large and then they die.Not good long term plants for me and my cats can't leave them alone. My high out of cat reach spots are reserved for toxic to cats plants, sigh. Funny story, my daughter has also tried many times to grow this plant, because it is one of her favorites. Her partner Bry decided to get one against her advice. Azure told him that if the plant survived for six months, she would marry him (they have lived together for 6+ years). They are now engaged, lol. To

For some reason, I do really really well with the curly spider plants, but struggle with the regular spider plants. I don’t know why, their care is the same. I have a baby that I got from a regular spider plant that I offed (😮 😩) and it’s a year old, but he and I we’ve been struggling this whole time. I’ve found it does best in plastic pots with a lot of drainage as well as a chunky mix and me triple checking if he’s completely dried out or not. I don’t know why I keep him!

Begonias are the bane of my existence. Everytime I buy one because they are really pretty, they start to struggle and die. The one that lives the longest is a silver spot, but boy, it´s struggeling. And I never have been able to figure out what I do wrong. Spidre plants however? easy. You just ignore or mistreat them, they love that. And if they get thrips, really dousing them in a mix of oil, water and soap works well. That way it get´s really into the smalles hiding places and solves the investation within two weeks. I showered them and then applied the mix every three days with intervalls of water spraying, after two weeks I did another shower round to get rid of the oily residue. I basically waterboearded them for two weeks, and they loved it :D

I also had a bad time with the alocasia frydec, I bought two corms from a plant friend and one was 100% white made like 4 tiny leaves and finally died and the other one was like 80-90% white, it now was 3 leaves and is alternating completely white and about 80% white. So my friend gave me another corm for free and the new one has a awesome variegation, still a lot of white, but definitely a sustainable amount. The new one is about 6 month junger and already bigger than the other, same conditions, just more green in the leaves (and a bigger corm to start with)

So I watches it for a while and it didn't die. And it finally started growing and I put it in a pot. So now I have 3 plants in there and they've gotten over the Cinderella syndrome. I enjoyed this video. There are plants that I have given up on. One is the pepperomia. I have kept them alive longer than in the past, but I don't think they are worth the trouble. I like plants that change over time. I did finally have success with my silver sword. It wasn't doing anything until I put it in a portable greenhouse for the summer. It was on a moss pole and finally rooted into it and produced the sword shapped leaves. If you can get one to grow it is nice because the petioles are short and close together, at least mine is. I am slowly giving up on Alocasia. But have found that they do best when purchased larger. I am keeping only the ones that do well for me, keeping on more than 2 leaves. Anyway, I do think you are very enjoyable to watch because you seem so relaxed in your videos and it seems as if you are sharing more than most utubers do when it comes to their ups and downs with their plants.
