Ah Perifratic... The circle is complete! Now your daughter will have her own memories, and the same love for the Atari, that you gained from your childhood
I think i remember that they don’t want own kids, or am i mistaken? I mean no matter if it’s his daughter, he’s the godfather or just another constellation, it was heartwarming to see 😁👍
Tore my heart out man. Was gaming like this with my kiddo too, now she mostly plays the Donkey Kong in my basement one year away from high school graduation . Still loves the classics. She will too for it. Great episode.
What a truly moving episode. As we get older and our parents move on, these memories take on such a huge significance . It's a part of us. Love this . Thank you .
She's a toddler already? No no no, too fast! One of the biggest heart melting moments I had was sitting in the theater with my Daughter watching Ghostbusters Afterlife. Same age I sat in a theater with my mom watching the original Ghostbusters. Add my mother having passed away in 2019, the scene at the end with Ramis, I lost it. I don't think she saw, but I lost it.
Love this! I had a very similar experience way back when I was just a nipper. The family computer was an Atari 130xe so the end of the line 400/800 family and my mum ordered a new game for it. I still vividly recall the box art with the giant monkey/gorilla on it and being told by my mum that it was the wrong game cartridge.. despite my protests that I was “sure I could make it work”, what I now know to be donkey kong for the 2600 got sent back to wherever she had ordered it from and I was sad..
What an emotional video to watch. Love your efforts as always mate. Also, your take on how much "latency" actually matters, mirrors my own, and it's refreshing to hear someone else say it, rather than foaming at the mouth shouting "it's too laggy" as many do.
Brother, thank you for the nostalgia tears! I still remember sitting on the floor with my dad playing the Atari 2600 he picked up from a pawn shop in 1983.
12:30 - Only a matter of time until we get the episode, "Hello Chip Dippers, on this edition of Retro Recipes I'll be cleaning out the Atari 400 that BabyFractic filled with oatmeal."
Hi Christian, as a fellow computer child of the 80’s I love your 8 bit content however it’s the way you create the videos with such thought and warmth which is truly mind blowing. You both come across as such genuine and retro enthusiasts which is impossible to fake and makes it so much more enjoyable to watch all you do. Thanks guys and congratulations on the birth of your daughter - my daughter is 25 now which to me is unbelievable so enjoy everything to the max as it goes by so quickly xx
Dude... you're not crying... I'm crying. :) My parents weren't really gamers themselves... but they were quite supportive of allowing me and my brother to enjoy our passion of computers, arcades and videos games in my youth in the 80's. They bought us our first console (Atari 2600, and yes we loved TESB) and eventually our first computer (Vic-20), and we enjoyed them both on our glorious black and white TV! Turn the brightness down and crank up the contrast... and watch those Asteroid ships fly across the screen with that amazing white phosphor trail! Over the years I carried that on and bought my own c64, Amigas, etc. Thanks for sharing a flash back in time of your special memories, and how you are carrying them on with your little one. My kids are adults now, but we share a common love for video games.
That moment when you share that special moment between you and babyfractic was very touching. That’s the moment that I told myself when it comes time for her to take over the channel she will be the one to carry over the phrase “ Hello chip dippers!” just like her parents. Keep up the good work!
Once upon a time ; Lucas film released the breath taking ; Empire Strikes Back on laserdisc , in THX , Dolby digital AC3 . The audio visual was amazing /is for the time . I have fond memories of spending my hard earned wages on a Pioneer laserdisc player ; those discs span at a frightening speed and I had to physically turn over the disc to watch the movies ! ( dual layer discs came later ) Nice to see you young ones revisiting your childhood devices ! The 80's were the very best time of my life !
Your Star Wars sit in box game was my favourite, I’m back on holiday as a kid ok early teen playing it everyday in all places Filey - near Scarborough. I’ve in Glasgow so Filey was exotic 😂. When life says “ didn’t see that coming did you” playing that game on your system for the first time with your lovely wee girl beside you watching on.
Worked on my 2600 2 thinks in January 1980 First week, I started martial arts, age 14 At the end of the month, I bought my atari 2600 44 years ago now Still training in martial arts, but now I know 10 martial arts. I have no consoles these days. Just 3 gaming rigs But I still am gaming I had that red turbo joy stick loved it
My full circle moment came with watching Lady Hawk, Willow, and labyrinth with my two sons. It’s a great feeling. Being a dad is the best honor and privilege of my life. Thanks for continuing to share your story. It inspires me to reflect on mine. Cheers Brother.
Wow, I can't believe how much Babyfractic has grown! It only seems like the other day she was born and should still be a her cot. I wonder if she'll be co hosting with you guys when she gets older. What a wonderful sight. :)
I'm pretty sure Harald Siegmund secured a Lucas Film Games license as Lucas owed him one when Harrald beat him in a game of marbles... either that or Harald was some sort of seafarer.
Loving the 400 Mini, overall, the joystick is perhaps the most innovative part except … the top button is in the perfect spot to accidentally hit, and it exits the game. Watch out for Donkey Kong, those barrels fly at like 900 mph at you, needs to be a way to cycle games down somehow. They also need to make additional joysticks more available.
I was also 10 in 1983, visited my Family in Scotland for the first time (Mom from Scotland dad was USAF) and also visited London that Summer. Who knows, maybe I saw Perifractic there somewhere. I have fond memories of playing arcade games in an arcade in Ayr and visiting my grandfather in Dundee. I totally get the sentimental feeling of making a childhood dream come true.
I think I remember playing this as a kid on another platform. Wasn’t there way way you could kill an AT AT if you hit it just above the head and had to be like a perfect shot?
Parker Bros also released a version for the Intellivision. Over the past decade or so, homebrewers have made more advanced versions for the Colecovision, the C64, and the Plus/4. I feel it’s a shame Parker Bros didn’t release versions of it - and Jedi Arena - for the Atari 5200/Atari 8-Bit. I loved Jedi Arena.
Brings back great memories. I never did have the Atari 400 but I’ve always wanted one. I did however have the Atari 2600 heavy 6er and I have the empire strikes back for that machine. You make amazing emotional videos. Thank you.
I remember back in the early 80's, my mum and dad buying me the monthly edition of Your Sinclair and Sinclair Programs and sitting in front of the Speccy for the whole day, typing in the code from it's pages. However, so many times, the code had bugs in it and failed to work. The following month, they'd release the page of code to fix it. Frustrating, but I sat there every day and typed the programs in
Beautiful video 🙌 I’ve watched your videos on and off for a long time now. I originally found your channel through the 8-Bit Guy. Although for some weird reason RU-vid hadn’t suggested your videos to me for a while even though I’m subbed and have the bell 🔔 notification clicked on. 🤔 I also didn’t realise you have become a father!? Huge belated congrats 🥂 really happy for you. 😊 Thanks for all the great videos over the years. Looking forward to many more. 👏
At 12:20 , the scene with babyfractic... it moved me so much. Absolutely beautiful. I remember my time with my daughters, and I would love to experience that again. Perhaps with their kids... Thank you. So much.
I was able to download the arcade version of Star Wars on my current mac. I really liked that arcade game but did not play it much. Empire was one of the better 2600 titles. But, once I had my first computer (the Atari 800), I never owned a console again or had any interest. My favorite 2600 game was Star Master. It was really perfection. Graphics were really good.
Oh yeah, great episode. In 1983, I received two of those cartridges for my birthday. It was also the main reason to get the 2600. I still have the second one, unopened and foil-sealed, in pristine condition.
I had a horrible feeling that the game wasn't going to work for a minute there. Glad it did. Was it anything like the Atari VCS version? Having learned of your misfortune with the cartridge and 400 when you were a youngster, it still kinda irks me that you guys were caught out by Atari's lack of clarity. You obviously kept the computer. Did you get your money back on the cartridge? That must have been a hefty amount of money to have lost back in those days. Lovely to see you and Babyfractic at the end there. Fantastic that she'll be able to have lots of first-hand experience of this retro tech as she grows up
Y'know I really don't remember exactly but I'm sure we would've returned the cartridge for a refund. Someone probably owns that exact one still somewhere...!
You totally take my breath away slipping me back in to the years of my childhood. Then seeing the image of you and Babrfactic sitting together in that moment life was prefect, Thank you Pirfractic, Lady Fractic and Baby Fractic.
Great emotional video, my friend! Next time put out a big warning to buy enough tissues. I felt like this (still do) about "Yie Ar Kung Fu" and "Rambo II" for the C64, which i desperatly wanted to have for the Commodore Plus/4, since i could not afford a C64 back then. These two games were the first two games i ever experienced on a homecomputer in the 80's
Christian is one of the luckiest retro gamers ever to have owned an 8 bit Atari computer in the early 80's.As a fellow Englishman, I've only ever met one other Brit who owned an Atari 8 bit computer that wasn't a 2600/VCS variant and I didn't meet this gent until I was at uni circa 2000. Owning a "proto Amiga" ie an Atari 400 or 800 gains you instant access into the lofty ranks of the retro computing elite for that alone.
I had an Atari 800 that my dad bought from Lasky's in Bromley, London in the early 80's. My dad upgraded the memory, got disk drives, the works. We had so many games as he was part of club of guys who used to hang out at 'The Silica Shop' in Sidcup, which was an Atari hub back in day. It was an awesome machine, but rare.
12:15 - Awww, that Princessfractic cameo was so cute. But I was wondering, do you and Mrsfractic ever fight over whether Princessfractic should learn English or American first? On a similar note, how do you and Mrsfractic communicate with each other? Do you just speak English while she speaks American and then you use Google Translate or a similar service to translate in real-time, or - knowing what a gifted artist you are - do you draw images to get your message across? Hm!
Ha good question. I'm hoping she has a British accent. She recently started saying "Milk" and it sounds pretty British to me. I think we're both secretly hoping for British honestly. We are genuinely often Googling words in disbelief the other one didn't know them!
@@RetroRecipes To be frank, _milk_ is in itself an utmost British thing and, by extension, word. I mean, you guys even had this documentary series on TV running for like a hundred years about all things milk called _Milkman Mat,_ if I'm not mistaken.
@@Thiesi Close! It was Dustman Dustin. It's funny but she used to say Nayyy! for milk. And they've learned that Nayyy is what babies say as a cry when hungry. I am going to propose that the world change the word for milk to nay. Then babies will basically enter the world crying 'milk!'.
There's plenty of SD solutions for the Atari, you can get them for as little as £15. The Backbit you showed is a multi-machine SD system. If you have a lot of retro computers (as you do) then you buy the backbit then an adapter ($9 each) for each machine and it soon becomes cheaper than buying multiple machine specific SD solutions.
What should I search for to find an SD card solution for £15? (Don't type a URL as it will get eaten by the spam filter). Looking forward to seeing the options thanks!
@@RetroRecipes A8PicoCart (github has details to make your own) without printed case I got for £15 (£25 with case) but i think it has issues with original 400/800. sio2pc cable if you don't mind setting up PC software (RespeQt). sio2sd can be found for £30-40, fujinet (much more than just a game loader) for £50-70
I remember playing that Empire Strikes Back game at my friend's house and thinking it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen-- non-Atari carts always seemed to figure out some kind of graphical magic that seemed impossible for the VCS. Also, don't blame Atari-- that's Parker Brothers that scammed you.
Just an amazing video. I’m in tears thinking back to my childhood . Loved the Atari Remember seeing it for first time my older neighbours son had one Paul. What a machine. I’m 54
Hold on! You've got a daughter now?! ... Cool!!! Congratulations!!! I'm now 50 and my daughter is 5, it's a beautiful thing 😃 Btw - you really know how to bring a tear to my eye when you're thinking back, so very relatable at our age 🥹
Pretty emotional. I was like that when I always wanted to play Ghostbusters on the C64. And I got the actual floppy disk. I cried when it took like 2 hours to load up......Lol.
People say coke is a hullava drug. I’d wager nostalgia is more powerful and more beneficial. Ps. On the end note, just be thankful your mums favourite shop wasn’t Iceland. Who knows how life would have been different.
Wonderful closure! I loved this game on the VCS. Funnily enough, I didn’t realize Atari made home computers at the time. I thought it was just arcades and consoles.
I remember playing this game back in the 80s on my Intellivision II. Everyone on youtube seems to have had Atari back then, I think I'm the only one who had Intellivision and Colecovision 😆 They had basically the same games.
I love those VHS filters, but why don't they ever filter for a VHS system with a clean tape head and decent tracking? The only real videos I've seen of this quality I found under my dad's bed! 😂
In all honesty, gaming cartridges from that era STILL confuse me. It's a bit of a bugger when out in the wild and running across some in a flea market box or garage... just sort of jumbled up together.
You are blest! Last part was just a blast from the past. Great to see that you are doing great! A new member of the family can have some impact on the balance. Looks like it is in balance there :)
