I love how George incorporated chords into a lot of his solos in the early days. Not a lot of lead players do that.

Far more guitar players did that then than now. Carl Perkins was likely the main influence on George’s leads in his Gretsch era.

@@averyetvspecial1487 In addition to Perkins, you can trace a direct line from the chord phrasing and twangy picking used by George in this song (and in many others) to the strumming and plucking of the Country Western players of the late 40s/early 50s, who were the direct forbears of that son of Lubbock TX, Buddy Holly.... who was the guitarist George emulated more than any other, especially in their first half of their run.

I think that John used a tremolo pedal (like the one on “don’t bother me”) which gives it a driving sound. I mean still by far the best cover on RU-vid and continue doing great things guys!

i remember this is the number where i plucked up enough of the courage and asked Susy Susan to dance with me at my freshman year prom to this number,,, she said yes!! ::::: )))) 59 years later and me and my wife Susan are still laughing,,and dancing,,and its all thanks due to the beatles !! Why didn’t Neil use the cavern bass for this and hold me tight? Paul used his cavern bass when they recorded with the Beatles if I’m not mistaken.

I like the Beatles version. But it's the Stone I like best. Brian Jones' slide guitar and unison vocals can't be beat. Ironically, I heard a recording on the radio of Ringo singing it in the same key with the All-Star Band.

I think practically all live versions have much more energy compared to their studio stuff. Hollywood Bowl is my favorite for George’s work, I think the studio limited his abilities somehow, maybe nerves

hey guys, this is wonderful as always. I know you strive to get the EQ to sound just like the original, but I'd love precisely to listen to your work sounding brilliant and modern without the compression and degradattion of passing the master mix through a tape recorder etc. Can you please release this same song with modern sound quality? Also, is it feasible to mix the isolated vocals into that mix? Just to experiment how the Beatles would sound had they achieved today's sound quality.

We use a mixture of modern and old. Throughout most of this, I recorded with a vintage altec compressor, and then did mix downs to that altec compressor as well. I would say the tape at the end of the process always makes it sound better to me, nothing is usually lost going to tape, it usually enhances things to my ears, I can make it a little louder and it tends to brighten things up a bit, without having to add EQ. I think this all a matter of opinion, cos there a lot of aspect of modern music that do sound “good” but I also think sound awful. I would record everything to tape if I could, it’s the format in which rock music sounds best on. It softens transients, and it’s more forgiving pitch wise than digital. There have been a few mixes I did during the early part of covid in which I didn’t have access to my tape machine - “don’t bother me” being one of them. I think by “lucy” I was back to using tape. I also record at 48k, convert it to 96k before running everything through the altec for mixdowns, so the final mix into the tape and back at 96k (I’ve fooled around with 192 before but it’s a little tricky)

@@neilcandeloramusic Thanks Neil. Well yes, I just listened to your "Don't bother me" and that's exactly the kind of sound that I wanted to experience. You're right it's less forgiving, not only pitch wise but also in the way that instruments don't "blend" together. This idea had popped up when I listened to the isolated drums and then to the entire mix, see how the cymbals lose so much brilliance after the mix. I love the natural sound of crashes and cymbals and hi-hats with their super-high harmonics (lots of brilliance), and while now I realize that going through tape adds a lot of sweetness of the mix, on the other hand it loses the cymbals' brilliance.
