At least for the aspect of cleaning up the caked grass, you should build yourself two ramps so you can scoot the mower on them and clean without removing the deck.
No need you can just use the wash port after each use. You connect the water up, set the deck to the lowest setting, engage the blades and lower the deck. I run mine for a bout 3 mins till I see the clippings flowing out. Without cleaning the deck each use the multching is very poor.
man John deere really spoils you with the build quality these days. PTO shaft and not a belt, a proper belt cover for the deck, a diff lock (probably what I'm most jealous of) and also shaft driven transaxel too. our gx355d has only has lone service like this about 20 years ago and its struggling now. all the belts and baring need replaced blates are so warn lines are left in the lawn where its just cut. I cant even remove the belt covers because the bolts just spin in their holes. Also, side note the deck wheels rotate 90* and then the deck roles out easy. Thats all I can remember from the manual some one uploaded online before the website was taken down. we never got a manual or a key with ours, it was all lost in shipping.
Always blow the filters in the opposite direction of flow. It damages the filters by pushing the dirt the filter caught through the filter medium, when you blow it the other way it does not damage the filter as bad.
With the price of JD parts being obscene and the company's fight to stop the right of the consumer to repair their own equipment, l really don't know why people still deal with them.
Can always tell the clowns that have never touched grass. You believe because other internet clowns say something of an industry they know fuck all about... that it must be true. You there is nothing you can't access. No part you can't order. There have been, and continue to be independent shops performing all the same services any dealer can perform.
why was I so stupid when I made this comment lol Im still stupid, but it surprises me when I see that in the past I argued against what's obviously right
I find when I'm washing my agricultural machinery that the grass stain or any other sort of staining comes off really well with a traffic film remover from Kramp, you can put it in a weed sprayer diluted 3 to one and just spray it on, leave it for 5 mins wash it off with the pressure washer and it leave a protective film for the next time you wash it, highly recommended! 25 litre tub is around the £35 mark, you should look into it 😊
£138 for a belt? All you did was pay for the JD logo on the package. Bet you can get the same length belt at a local industrial belt supplier for a bunch of £ less, and probably made by the same people who make them for JD!
i have been digging through your archive of restoration work on the huge array of vintage machines and i have to say, you are a man of true dedication to detail. a pleasure to watch and always something to learn from your work ! keep at it , top quality job every time.
I’ve just had a new toothed timing belt on a John Deere mower deck, £138 rrp, £38 from our local bearings & belts supplier! I always use original parts, but that’s too big a saving to miss!!
I have the John Deere X350 with 18 HP Kawasaki V-Twin engine. I had mine since January 2016, and it has 283.5 hours on it. Mine is a four-season machine. I use it to mow the lawns in both my property & my neighbor's property. Then I bag-up the fallen leaves in both my property & my neighbor's. And I plow snow out the driveways. So, I got mine with all attachments at the same time, bagger, plow, weights, chains and Snow Cab. So far it has been a VERY reliable machine without ANY issues and no, I have not replaced the 12-volt battery yet.
A really good product for cleaning is TFR as used for cleaning commercial vehicles get the non caustic version. You say you would like a iseki take a look at the shibaura, they were also badged Ford and ransomes. 48" deck shaft drive excellent machines still made today bit pricey new very interesting history
Your videos are so relaxing... I've always though that there is something therapeutic about cutting grass, turns out that mover maintenance is quite satisfying also.
Thanks for the upload, MR. You always do amazing work! I have never ridden on a John Deere diesel lawnmower before. My dad has always owned petrol powered lawnmowers for most of my younger life up until now. He's had an old Lowe's brand lawnmower from 1989 up until 2002. He sold it to someone who wanted to restore the lawnmower. He bought a Huskee brand lawnmower in 2002 from Tractor Supply Company. He still has that lawnmower in his garage, but the rear axle is broken. He doesn't want to fool around with it, because replacing the rear axle is expensive. His current lawnmower that he owns now is a Toro brand zero turn with a Kawasaki v twin that he bought in 2013. I'm not big on zero turn lawnmowers. I have to have a steering wheel in front of me lol
Very good maintenance work. This lawn tractor looks almost new. I like the idea of recording the hours and date the oil was changed on the base of the filter. I enjoy this channel.
I might be a cloistered city dweller but I am from the country of rolling hills and grass, Denmark, I never see these machines, sadly, they are fun. I feel like it's just push mowers, or giant combine harvesters if you venture out into the country side.
Thank you Mr. Machinery Restorer, you helped me to sleep today when I badly needed it 🙏. It's the voice you see. You have a great voice and a brilliant vocal manner for this RU-vid malarkey. And yes, I did make sure to re-watch the bits I missed 😉👉. I wouldn't skip one of your vids for the world dude 👊👊👊. 😎
Where's p2 re: FIXING A CHEAP FOUR WHEELER QUAD BIKE? Imo it's frustrating to see new/different videos uploaded after watching p1 in a series and you're still waiting for p2. For me, watching multiple projects in no particular order takes away from what you like about each project. Again jmo.
Been watching your channel for ages now and love your dedication to repairing restoring modern and vintage mowers of all kinds. Surprised to see none of the mowers ive seen the tractor one's have any grass collection. Maybe ibe missed vids with tractors with a grass collector but be interesting to see some with. My Uncle had a Actco lawn tractor he used in Halifax and that was a dream to ride, maintain. Love the channel. Looking fwd to future vids. Richard Perth western Australia
It’s not terribly surprising to hear that the belt was that much money. John Deere uses gold to get that particular shade of green paint; EVERYTHING John Deere is expensive!
The fact that the belt is so much work to replace and also 138 pounds makes it look like JD is up to anti-consumer shenanigans as usual. Also, I don't know why but it seems odd to me to see an American lawn tractor being used on the regular over in the UK, wasn't expecting that one at all.
And there's the reason I will never buy a John Deere. Expensive parts and way over complicated. When greasing your front steering, jack up the front end. That will allow some grease to come out of the bottom to lubricate the pivot point. I use epoxy appliance paint to paint my decks. It's a little slicker and tougher than regular spray paint. Thanks for taking us along.
Excellent video Machinery Restore :) have work on Lawn Mower Tractor brand called Troy Built red and black color! They used there own motor type and great machine I have 2021 year one ! Very good so far and lots model of them out there !
17:47 I tie a loop of paracord around the end of springs, in a bowline, then use the rest of the hank of cord to pull the spring loose. It works with very stiff springs, like on exhaust manifolds and motorcycle kickstands.
Hello daggerwin, ive recently picked up a westwood w11 with a very early gear shifter infront of the seat, bassically im wondering if you would be interested in doing a restoration video on it ? I know this sounds a bit stupid
One thing you didn’t point out that the mower deck on that tractor mower has a male hose connector on the right-hand side of the mower deck = that I assume is for “deluxe” water washing of the deck/blades - after mowing the lawn go to your hose pipe and connect it to the “wash port” and turn on the tap & lower the deck and engage the blades = the mower should clean itself with the water. Another commenter said that, and painting the deck risks blocking the water port?
I have found it to be very helpful to clean my lawnmower deck at the end of the mowing season and applying a heavy coat of a mixture of ATF, PB blaster and dish soap. Let it sit over winter, and reapply 2 weeks in the spring before mowing. During the course of the summer I have very little grass accumulation.
@@M.TTT. I do on occasion mow wet grass. I also mow 5 and 1/2 acres. I do a midsummer blade sharpening and usually only clean out a couple of handfuls of grass. The ATF and PB blaster have heavy rust inhibitors and the dish soap helps it stick, and it mixes very well. The key is the fall application and letting it soak into the metal all winter. If nothing else, a good preservative for your mower deck.
Here in rural Victoria Australia, I bought a Reco ride on that looked ok. The belt let go 30min in on my first cut. Thinking I pushed too hard I bought new belts and one let go in 15min. I lifted it up with a block and tackle and found the deck bearings to be shot and the mower professional refused to help me out. I ended up selling it for half what I paid and told the guy what needed to be done. I am disabled and couldn't do it myself. This is a warning for people to not just take a pro's word that it is all Reco'd.
that's unfortunate, you do need to know how to check everything over when buying used equipment - just like cars - otherwise there's lots of dishonest people out there.
138 for a belt is not a surprise. You should be glad you're not a farmer here in the US. They gogue them price wise and lock them out of being able to service their own machines forcing them to contact a dealership for service.
Here just something. I found out and it will help u I used to paint all my machinery with used engine oil but then I stopped and started using used hydraulic or back end oil engine oil is Completly full of carbon and the carbon eats away at the metal I’ve seen the damage it’s done on harvesters and stuff and the back end oil is clear and far cleaner to work with
You are a braver man than me power washing that wonderful mower, I would just use air pressure and blow off the debris and scrape the dead grass, You blow water into those bearings in a few months or less bearings will start going down Just my humble opinion,
Yes, it is much more reliable. But cost 4 times as much to repair. When it does fail. The deck still has a belt to run the blades. The shaft is just the drive system. The drive gearbox on the deck is over $400.
@@steamboatwillie935 exactly, I never really saw the point in them using the shaft pto for a mower deck other than to make more money off parts or maybe for design purposes perhaps.
@@M.TTT.Having had both tractors, will belts and tractors with gearboxes. I'd take the gearbox, over belt driven, any day of the week. Changing belts gets expensive too. I've never had to change a shaft driven gearbox. Hope I never have to.
@@M.TTT. Right... That is the only reason... We will ignore the constant belt misalignment as the engine and deck are NEVER on the same plane. We will ignore how little grass was in the mower deck because it does not require any opening for the belt to pass through.
At our shop we used to have a magnetic, horizontally free spinning mount which you could attach the blade to. It would turn the direction where the blade was still heavier, really nice little gadget
For putting the PTO shaft back on if you lock the collar back you can pretty easily put the shaft back on reaching from the back on the machine and pulling it forward toward you and sliding it on the splines…pretty easy to feel where they are since you can see them and no taking off the tire.
Its amazing how they manage to cram a 3-cylinder diesel onto what is basically a glorified riding lawn mower chassis with a hydraulic deck lift and hydraulic steering
@Failure_Is_An_Option, I have 4 of them new every 2 years but is nice to have a spare hence my comment, plus the lead time to get a new one at the moment is around 2/3 months
@@joeclarke8578 Right... You're the only one that can't see how ridiculous your lie is. I mean if a clown buys four of these every two years... You keep one for a "spare". Such a silly thing to lie about. You have problems.
is there a reason you went for an official john deere belt? since they cost that much, i would probably have searched for a 3rd party one for cheaper, if they exist of cause
138 British pounds is 169 us dollars for a single belt. This is why I can’t afford a John Deere too expensive. I gave 98 dollars for 2 deck belts and this lawnmower rider was manufactured in 2004-2005 I thought I was gonna have a heart attack.
