Toward the end of the Vietnam War and the capture of Saigon on April 30, 1975, 130,000 people who supported the fallen South Vietnamese government were airlifted out of the country by the United States government to bases in the Philippines. A second wave began fleeing Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in 1978 and lasted into the mid-1980s. Over the next two decades, millions would seek refuge abroad. Of those, over a million Southeast Asian refugees have resettled in the U.S. since 1975.

We have around 200,000 South Vietnamese refugees here in Orange County California. They are good card carrying conservative Republicans, and an all around great addition to Orange County. They have helped keep Orange County a conservative stronghold here in Southern California. We love them.

I was in the navy during the war. I never thought I would see mass exodus from the brutal communists and vietcong the way I did after the war. We sailed right past you without giving water or food. I was a child in Carlsbad NM. We had a family of boat people move in next to us in a very tiny apartment. The address was 405 South Lake street so theirs should of been 407. I just remember how astounded they were when my mom invited them over and they went through our cabinets and our refrigerator at what we had for food. I remember the daughter who was close to my sister's name was Ahn. Is there an agency or organization that keeps track of them in the US? I know it would make my mother and father's memories happy if I could find that family.

My daughter in law and her parents and eventually all of her siblings made it to our country. First she and her parents as some of the boat people and later the other children. I am very proud of these relative.s. The have a very strong work ethic, believe highly in education and have improved not only their lives but that of their community. Today they are chemist, pharmacist an accountant ,an auto mechanic business owner and an X-ray technician. I regret so many of the Vietnamese people suffered but happy for this family and the thanks to those that helped the refugees.

My family were all refugees from S. Vietnam in 1975 when the capital Saigon fell to the Communists. Unlike most of them, we left on a Boeing for California because my father was a CIA officer. The CIA gave him 20 plane tickets and he had all of us leave plus his secretary's family. The strange part was that years later, I would help Muslim refugees from Syria and other Islamic countries. It just goes to show that what goes around comes around. I'm Catholic but I help Muslims.

*Idiots like you are quick to point out a few mistakes made by Americans and ignore stuff the other side did that were 10 times worse.* Vietnam today actually prefers not to delve into past war crimes because that would also expose the far greater purge of 900,000 Vietnamese by communists after the Unification of Vietnam in 1976, 2 years after Americans left. Even during the war, the South Vietnamese police and their families were targeted by insurgents and brutally tortured and murdered by Vietcong, and the surviving families had a blood debt to these criminals. Even today, most South Vietnamese survivors in America are Republican, and there are those refugees who would make American Neocons blush. They even say now that Vietnam is capitalist, it should return the control of the country to the legitimate South Vietnamese government. Let's not forget even after all that, the Chinese invaded Vietnam in 1979 with no declaration of war. Just like the late Ho Chi Minh (father of North Vietnam) predicted. Actually Ho Chi Minh wanted to get official recognition and support from America to fight off the Chinese threat, but after McCarthyism, American expertise on foreign matters just wasn't the same and the administration thought communists were all in league with each other. (Yeah, it's stupid. Brezhnev even tried to nuke Beijing after China invaded Damansky Island in 1969, but Nixon threatened him to back off and gave China billions of dollars and free industrial tech to kickstart its economy after all the shit Mao Zedong did to destroy Chinese culture and industries.) Are you forgetting South Vietnam actually invited America and several other allies to defend itself from North Vietnam, and even refused their request to invade North Vietnam and destroy it once and for all, because America thought China would invade Vietnam (without declaration of war, just like the fascist Japanese at Pearl Harbor) and escalate the war to WW3, like the same shit they tried to pull in 1950 Korean War? The evil puppet regime of North Korea would have been a footnote in history were it not for China attacking the UN peacekeeping coalition of 16 nations, you know! (They got banned for that. Until Nixon gave them a seat in the UN and also a permanent seat in the UN Security Council equal in power to US, UK, France, and USSR) China repays this by using state-controlled hacking institutions to bully honest hardworking citizens of the 1st world and stealing their technological inventions and Intellectual Property... *$250 billion dollars EVERY YEAR.* (That's more than the 2018-19 state government budget of California which is $197 billion. Note that Cali is America's richest state with $3 trillion total GDP, and if it was to secede as an independent nation it would be 5th richest country in the world, richer than France which has double the population of California, and neck-and-neck with India... but India has 35 times as much ppl as Cali.) This isn't cold war type government-to-government espionage, it's straight up government-sponsored theft from foreign civilians. But the Chinese fascists bought out the American media by handing them a couple billion dollars and buying them outright so average Americans are lulled into a false sense of security and thinking Russians are the real threat. Little Putin's Russia actually has a lower GDP than the southern half of Korea, a die-hard pro-American ally which was saved by the UN from Chinese invasions.

I used to work with a man whose story is almost exactly like these people. He grew up in Vietnam, attended high school during the war, escaped to Indonesia after the war, then finally made it to the USA, to establish his wife and kids. It's so inspiring to hear these accounts. He has stories about his father in the late 70s/early 80s being framed by the government and put in jail for 7 years, and another brother being murdered by the government and it being covered up.

Europa Man Yes, most were granted Japanese citizenship and their Vietnamese citizenship was relinquished because Japan does not allow dual citizenship. It happens to any foreigner to applies for Japanese citizenship: his or her original citizenship was officially relinquished by the Japanese Immigrant officials. And no, Japan does not allow birthright citizenship. Each person must go through a rigorous process in order to grant citizenship. No exceptions.

I wonder how many Vietnamese people had to find before they would agree with AJ's agenda. To compare Vietnamese refugees to the Syrian refugees is insulting. Do I feel sorry and believe we should help Syrian refugees? I do. But there are a lot of able-bodied Syrian men who are cowards and simply choose the easy route of running away. For the South Vietnamese, if you had no family member involved in the war, then you knew someone who fought and died in the war. South Vietnamese did not run away until the city of Saigon truly fell on April 30th, 1975. The price of freedom is high, and that is price Syrians should pay if they truly cared about a free Syria.

True i can see there are Vietnamese that can't speak English and required a translator. But in my case, not sure about yours, but these things are mainly for the elderly Vietnamese that can't speak English very well no surprise there. As far as the public education, i have not seen a single Vietnamese group demanding the public education to be taught in Vietnamese. I do see some high schools offering Vietnamese courses but that is only for foreign language requirements. Overall the younger generation, such as myself, mainly speak English. "But mostly, Vietnamese live in large ethnic enclaves, like Chinatowns, that exist to subvert US criminal and income tax laws with money laundering." True i would not deny that happening but i could tell you that any other racial group can also do the same thing. For example, Eastern Europeans and Italian immigrants can also participate in money laundering and other criminal activities within a well establish group i.e the Mafia. But i would like to ask if you have any evidence to back up your case please?

Worse they force their culture into said country like wanting the Shariah law implemented.

Because you want us to eat pork, drink alcohol, to be naked without our will and at the very end to be you. Integrate means to speak the local language and work. To accept the justice system and if this wouldnt do that "Many" muslims, it would be waaay worse here. we will never give up our religion, we will never give up our existance and dignity. Just like the jews, we wont loose against your discrimination and antisemitic phrases

To accept refugees, there has to be jobs for them, which many of the countries didn't have that they migrated to. They should have been turned around when they arrived in America. Once Communism came to power in Vietnam, the government would have supplied them with training and jobs. This story seems to be leaving out many chapters, especially the Soviet and Chinese involvement in the spread of Communism.

+Berkan Celebi Where the heck did you get your information! The north acted worse than animals! My family experienced it first hand. The american soldiers were no angels and yes they did horrible things but the communist soldiers were even worse in pure brutality! They skinned people alive, robbed and raped civilians as they pleased, hacked people into pieces with machetes, smeared honey in orifices and let ants eat them alive etc. In our village, they even put a bounded man next to a road and forced everybody who passed to cut a piece out of him until he died! Our soldiers had a lot of trouble fighting them because they hid among the civilians and used them as cover. Every civilian killed was a victory for them because they knew some would join them out of hatred or the world press would solely focus on us as the bad guys. They were a huuuge inspiration for the same middle eastern terrorists we are fighting today. No one wins a war by playing nice. South Vietnam was a much better place than north to live in. Even South Korea and Singapore were not on pair with us back then. The north didn´t won militarily but because they were able to cut the us support by affecting the public opinion in USA, while Soviet and China kept supporting the Hanoi government. As my uncle said: "It´s hard to win a war when you are out of bullets and gas". After the war they started to hunt down everybody who actively supported or worked for the southern government. The common people were sent to re-schooling to learn communist propaganda while they did hard labor (slave) jobs. My fathers´ friend who was a soldier had to clear mines with his bare hands while the higher ranking officers were executed together with their families. My mom told me how horrible these propagandaschools were. People were taught to spy on their fellow citizens because the loyalty to the communist party was way more important than your own parents. You were hit and tortured if you didn´t obey and my mom still got scars on her body to this day. They lived in fear every night because the "secret police" would knock on peoples´ door during night if they had any suspicion that they had any anticommunist beliefs and take them out for a "chat" promising your family that you would be right back. Most of the time they would never be seen again. To say that they didn´t do any crimes is a HUGE LIE! Vietnam has at least open more up now and started to enjoy some of the benefits like more open societies in the west. I am sure we would have prospered a lot more like South korea and Japan if south had won the war a long time ago and be in a much better position today against China.

+Berkan Celebi The regime officially took over in 1976, when Hanoi officially mandated communism/the command economy in southern Vietnam. My parents fled in 1984/1985. They fled the Communists.
