Minecraft potions are an interesting case. They require specialized materials, and follow complex, multi-step recipes that nobody memorizes, that can be totally ruined by following a wrong step. The process is especially finnicky to automate, since hoppers tend to drain out the inputs before they're processed. In short, potions are something that everybody has a use for, but typically nobody bothers to make themselves, meaning it's a perfect candidate for capitalistic exploitation.
@lichofhearts7479
@lichofhearts7479 8 месяцев назад
And thus why you have competition. The capitalist system promotes competition and hard work through it to prevent monopoly. Now as every human system goes, it has its flaws, but I think I’d rather not starve to death under a system that promotes laziness through equal pay despite what amount of work you may do, and also the idea of common property which places way too much power within the hands of the government for them to exploit.
@willow5945
@willow5945 8 месяцев назад
@@lichofhearts7479 Minecraft potions are an example of what's called a natural monopoly, similar to railroads or electrical grids in the real world. Basically, the minimum initial investment in terms of infrastructure and expertise is so great, that it's not worth it for most people to even try. Then, if someone actually does succeed in setting it all up, that one network is generally enough to service everybody. So you end up with a situation that really resembles a monopoly, and has all the problems generally associated with it, but which came about without any deliberate collusion from the actors involved, and was in fact inevitable from the hard nature of the technology itself. You see this in the video. The guy was just running his bar. He wasn't doing anything to suppress other people from setting up their own bars. Yet he still faced no competition, because paying his extortionate rates was still less trouble than establishing an alternative. What trust-busting initiatives typically do in these cases is establish crown corporations that basically hold all that infrastructure as a setting for fair play. So in the case of railroads, the tracks and stations would be state-owned, while the locomotives themselves are controlled by private interests. The main issue here is that Minecraft servers generally have little to nothing in the way of centralized government, and the administration that does exist is more interested in rooting out criminal behaviour than fostering cooperation, so something like that would have to come from a grassroots level. I'm thinking about a community run nether wart farm, brewing co-ops, accessible guides and recipe books, that sort of thing.

Turmoil has engulfed the Separatist's Minecraft server. The prices of potions to the playerbase is in dispute. Hoping to resolve the matter with a blockade of deadly lingering potions of poison and harming, the greedy Dexter Jettster has stopped all shipping to the small village on the plains biome. While the mods of the Separatists endlessly debates this alarming chain of events, the server owner has secretly dispatched Obi-Wan Kenobi, the guardian of peace and justice in the game, to settle the conflict…

This is a great example of the relative nature of value in a free market. The potion brewer is a skilled alchemist and has a streamlined supply of materials to brew potions in bulk, so their value is quite low to him. Meanwhile to the other players, they DON'T have the skills or desire to make those potions, but they do have a lot of currency from whatever else they've been doing on the server. They can afford the potions and are willing to pay because they are very useful to them. The brewer thinks he's ripping people off, the customer thinks they're getting a good deal. In fact, both parties have gained from the transaction.

It works better as, if I remember correctly, Dexter's species are known for being impulsive. It's why Dexter used to be a miner, learned about Kamino assassins, and later became a restaurant owner.

Back when I played on Mincreaft servers, I made insanely big cactus farms together with my faction. They were so big that a double chest was like filled up in a minute or so. Instead of selling the cactus 1 after 1 which would take a lot of time. I put my cactus up for sale so people could bid on my inventories and I earned a great profit these farms. I used the credits to buy super hard to get enchanted armours and weapons with modded abilities lol.

Gods, I actually was in a roleplay raid based server as a brewer, ended up in the back of a war mongering fortress that somehow established itself fairly strong being payed by other noble factions to protect or get rid of their problems. I slowly worked my way towards custom commissioned drinks for the richer ilk and because brewers we're rare (The faction I was in totally didn't scoop up almost every brewer they could find and the alchemy zone was filled with maybe 6 people at a time) I was able to squirm my way up to the higher echelons overtime. My downfall was when poisoning became a thing through a food plug in and I was assumed to be the culprit

Stories like this remind me of this one time I joined a server with its own economy system modded into it. Sheets of paper were used to purchase things through the server. I found an abandoned paper factory, like, someone had literally set up this mechanism underground to just generate lots of paper as quickly and efficiently as possible. So, I used it (there was no theft involved, it was self-regenerating) and accumulated a bunch of paper, then I just started buying what I wanted, asking people what they wanted and saying, "Oh, yeah, I have that", and so on. Didn't break the economy or anything like that, I just embraced philanthropy for my entire time on the server, and nobody ever questioned how this random newcomer just always seemed to have everything that anyone ever needed or wanted. I sometimes wonder if something like this could even happen in today's Minecraft, or if I just had this totally unique and rare experience that is now permanently lost to time. I should note, I'm not that bright.

Good on him. If nobody else wanted to set up a potion shop then it's their lazy fault that he got to overcharge so much. That's just simple competition, you charge what you can get away with, if you can't get away with it you lower prices until you make more than the competition.

@IridescentKySoul Is there anything wrong with it? Nobody else on the server set up a potion shop, so everybody just bought from him and then cried about him succeeding when they were the ones who enabled that to happen. If they wanted potions but didn't want to pay the exorbitant prices he was charging, they didn't have to buy them and someone else could have just set up a rival business that charged less. It's not like this one guy somehow managed to hoard all the potion ingredients on the server so nobody else could make any, he just saw there was a demand and offered a supply, and without competition he got to decide the price.

On one of my favorite HL2DM RP servers (which now no longer exists) was a very interesting player. He never used a weapon, but at the same time he was always in the top of the most influential and wealthy people on the server. You ask me, "How did he achieve this? Did he really pay for this?". No, there was no DarkRP back then. It was an old classic HL2DM server, there were no service or donations. The server lived solely on the money of the administration itself. But let's get back to the story. There used to be legends about this interesting player (let's call him "Billy") that once upon a time, he was also an ordinary pro player. Billy was so full of his aim and combat skills that he just got bored - and then a very brilliant idea came to his mind: He decided to pay players to kill and rob other players instead of him (and in return they received a percentage of the loot). Billy knew perfectly well which player posed which threat to him and other players, and who was fighting whom, respectively, he always knew who to use against whom. It was always a very generous offer - to defeat your sworn enemy, and even for money. No one has ever been able to refuse his offer. Sometimes, newcomers came to the server. Imagine the picture: You're playing on a regular server, where most of the players just like to shoot at each other for fun. And suddenly, an unarmed man comes around the corner in front of you, and you have a pistol or a SMG with you. And this player is not even aggressive towards you. He can easily be robbed or even killed. Sounds pretty funny, right? That's what many people thought - until an ultra-high reward was assigned to their heads, for which any pro player was ready to hunt for weeks or even months. And I was one of those newbies...

If your making comments of our gaming stories into videos, then let me tell you a story of mine: I first joined a minecraft server with random players who I had never met. I had ambitions to create my own empire, one that could conquer the entire server. however, I could never provide a reason for anyone to join my small hamlet kingdom. for the longest time. I was it's only resident. after a week of playing, I soon gave up on my humble hamlet town and went underground, choosing to simply mine minerals and sell them to players as a lonely hermit. despite my efforts, I could never make a success in that either. so I took off again, returning to the surface world I traveled across vast plains and desserts. looking for a purpose. that was when I stumbled across... an unfinished house. someone had merely set up the frames for what it was gonna be but I assumed it had since been long abandoned. I chose to set up a little camp in between it's pillars of dark oak and cobblestone, feeding off only of the pigs and wheat I grew around the site. I lived there all alone for quite some time, until an idea came into my head during a rainy night. I had been living in a dirt hole the entire time to evade the monsters and was never really confident in my resource gathering and management skills. I mainly played one solo creative mode before joining the server, however I wanted to give building a try. I wanted to do to one players build what i had wished others would do for mine back at my abandoned kingdom. so I gathered dark oak saplings, cobblestone, constructed furnaces and chests, then I began re-construction of the building. I dug out the ground and installed a plank floor, I put up the walls to help finally keep the mobs of the night out, I constructed the second story of the building, assembled the roof and then began planting a garden. the build was large and with many rooms, eventually a second player passed by me on a bright and sunny day. we talked on chat and I told him of my plans and the purpose of the build, he then offered to help me finish it. he was a more experienced designer in minecraft, he helped furnished the interior using minecraft design hacks like creating knight statues or a bath tub and other real world interpretations. after the 3 hour mark, we had completed the house. we planted around it trees, bushes, a farmland and an even more detailed garden with a hedge maze. I jokingly decided to add a little "fun" dungeon with a lady pig named "miss piggy" tied up in it for the one we planned to sell the house to. we sent the message on to chat to offer the house up to anyone willing to pay for it and one player teleported in, offering 13 diamonds for the build and a golden apple. me and my partner made the sale official by posting a picture of the buyer next to his freshly purchased house on the server's discord chat and after that, we went our separate ways. after feeling confident in my skills, I decided to go back and retry building the kingdom of my dreams. however, when I returned, I discovered that the kingdom I remembered once being small was now thriving with players. before leaving the kingdom, I left a little grave at the front entrance. my goodbye on it was "the kingdom that never could be". someone, noticing the grave, understood that finding the kingdom was a great dream of mine. so like how I took up action to fulfill someone else's planned build, they themselves took up action to fulfill my plans on building a nation, and they managed to do it. so much so that it wasn't mine anymore, I may have laid the groundwork but it was they who picked up the pieces, making it their own. so after I gave my thanks and blessings towards the newly established kingdom, I parted once again, but this time knowing that I have had made more of an impact on the server and the people who played on it then previously before. and that is my story.

Both of these videos remind me of a country roleplay I was apart of I was centered around Switzerland in a Post-Apocalypse, I was using diplomacy to get scattered regions to join me I managed to become the regional power of central Europe, containing the whole of Switzerland, northern Italy and, southern Germany. This went very well with a growing Italian player even joining along and buying pieces of land to reform Italy. This was until a Dutch player got mad for no reason, nobody else was complaining and he started crying and broke the rules of the roleplay by funding a North Italian revolution that he planted Then the German player who just now joined insisted that he had better technology and infrastructure despite my nation being bigger and older providing stability for Central Europe Because I was a nice person, I didn't call up any mods, I decided to play into this, this led to me getting kicked all the way back into just Switzerland and Liechtenstein. I of course didn't think this was fair but it was too late. Eventually the Italian player became a puppet and my people fiercely hated the Germans Still staying in character my nation militarized and shut itself off to most other nations but then the German player got pissy and told a mod to get me kicked because he didn't like that I have never played that game since Long story short: two players broke the rules of RP and then later cried to mods when I started fighting back while staying in the rules

Well, if no one was providing competition, then the prices were the right ones as the players clearly were willing to pay that amount. A thing people need to remember about market economies is that it's all about choice. In that server, all it required was someone else to run their own brewery and sell the drinks at a lower price to deal with his higher prices. Why? Because there are no set prices for things, it will fluctuate with available money in the economy, competition, and resources. Supply and demand.

Just repeat our lies about capitalism, we can’t make it look bad unless we do!!!” Was my ”anti-capitalist” act convincing? I think i got pretty close, personally.

@huntergman8338 7 месяцев назад
@@schnek8927 Yea, you hit the nail on the head. That something that bugs me so much now. People are quick to blame capitalism and markets, yet all they needed to do is to see what needs to be done. To quote a movie from by childhood, "See a need, fill a need."

@@huntergman8338 It is funny when they point out flaws of capitalism where few individuals manipulate the market creating monopolies trough corrupt officials and lobbying. Their solution to that problem is to give up economic freedoms to those officials, creating a legally enforced monopoly, now not as a flaw of the system but as a core feature. 🤦‍♂

bread suddenly became 1000$ and its the cheapest food. and produced only by one company. your salary is like 5000$ and you earn more money by committing crimes. choice between suffer from hunger vs risk getting imprisoned. in both cases these are "not" choices. theyre forced upon to you by the unregulated capitalism. regulations are there to prevent such thing happening.
@libertyprime1614
@libertyprime1614 7 месяцев назад
@@QWERTY-gp8fd That's nonsense. Bread is easy to make even at home, it wouldn't cost 1000$ because too many people can make it or other food making 1000$ bread obsolete. This is a free market right there.

In reality there are many ways to define capitalism not all are bad and yet when greed hits you, it takes many forms. Skins for example an unbelievable stupid idea, where the company doesnt make money with the game content, thats free, but with something unrelated to the game. This sends companiea the message, that they can sell you literally nothing and you pay for it. Consumer shape the market, not them. Minecraft a quality game, survived everything though.

Reminds me when I was banned for creating a coalition of neutral systems that, while still part of the Senatae for both CIS and Republic, we traded with the two sides using our own ships. In the early stages of the war, trade was slightly restricted. But as the war grew closer to the coalition and moves by both sides threatened various members’ neutrality…it was a trickle. Not only was I banned, but the Mandalorian capital was once again razed to the ground, as well as the system occupied by the Republic. Worse was the coalition members all were banned and occupied by the Republic.

This person clearly doesn’t understand supply and demand, if lots of people want the service and only one person is willing to provide it then it is naturally going to be expensive due to supply and demand. He wasn’t overcharging the true price is just very high.
