During World War I, a young nurse in a hospital in German-occupied Belgium is secretly feeding military information to the British. Complicating matters is the guilt she feels when she has to treat the German casualties inflicted as a result of the information she's passed on, and the fact that the local German commandant is falling in love with her.

**No Spoiler** The worst thing about this film is the title which could be pasted on any espionage flick. The film deserves better. Madeline Carroll's face is as legible as a book-- marvelous. I had never heard of her. This film is based on an autobiography. Huge cast. Believable exterior scenes. Involves use of Chlorine Gas during WW1. Absolutely worth watching.

This was of course a fictionalised version of the life of Edith Cavell,a British nurse who nursed British,French and German soldiers in Belgium during the early part of the First World War.She was executed by a German firing squad in 1915. Her story is not the most common in history but is certainly amongst the bravest. She was of course not the only nurse in Belgium to aid both sides of the wounded, simply the most distinguished and now forgotten after 100 years of history.

This is not fictionalised version of the life of Edith Cavell. This is the true story of Marthe Cnockaert a Belgian nurse & spy en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marthe_Cnockaert

As Kate commented. The title is akin to naming Buckingham Palace a building. Beautiful Madeleine Carroll sets the bar high for acts to follow. Thank you for bringing this film to You Tube.

It’s so funny to watch a cultural phenomenon being played out through the medical profession. If we were to see the American version of a nurse in the same year , we would never witness a male nurse playing the same role. Culturally Europe has always been the leader , but America always lagged behind . In 2023 the left has reduced our ability to become leaders in the Arts, science, technology, politics, culture, and now basic freedoms. Watching these old movies gives me a clear picture of what types of influence was being tolerated or experimented through the art of acting in movies. If you want to measure how far we have gone? Just look at our churches, schools, and entertainment. There are no more heroes and certainly there are no more leaders never mind individualistic themes that inspire courage, faith, hope, exploration…etc.etc. God bless us all

How on earth did they get the tracking shot on a stone street without any extraneous camera movement?! There wasn't track on the ground to be seen and gimbals weren't used yet? It's at 14:40. And for 1933 it's an incredible shot. Heck, for 2022 it's incredible.

Excellent film with a heavyweight cast of acting notables---Herbert Marshall, Conrad Veidt and Gerald DuMaurier. Madeleine Carroll is a most elegant (that aristocratic Voice) and capable actress...more than just a "pretty face". One sees the great intelligence Hitchcock recognized and effectively mobilized in his early films. A shame that Her name seems to be falling into a bit obscurity as deserves to be better known among 21st century audiences. I particularly liked her in The General Died at Dawn (36), another war adventure / spy film as the naive daughter of a munitions runner who matures fast. What's so remarkable about Carroll's biography and this film is that she did indeed suspend her Hollywood career during WWII to work as a Front Line Red Cross Nurse. So it becomes almost "biographical". She was highly decorated for her devotion to service. I wonder if these film roles (Blockade, 1938) inspired her that there was more to one's life than being a "glamour gal".

I wonder about the wisdom of blaming all the people of a country for the inhumanity of their rulers. Evil people often obtain power by evil means and hold onto that power the the same means. Evil people are often masters at masking their true nature. Anyway...
