Tequila has decided to preen her human.
** IMPORTANT **
This video does not show a recommended behaviour or trick. This is an experienced person and bird that has been handled by this person for 5 years. Do not try this at home. Do not try this with any parrot that you do not know VERY well.

It's adorable how they are using their preening gland to groom you. 😊

That is how you know the bird cares about you to groom you. The bird will expect it in return.

These birds live longer than the human being. If you are like 30-40 and you buy one as a baby, the bird will spend more than half of it's life grieving you.

iirc they have the same average life span of a human in the west of about 70-80 years

I have a 35 year old Amazon parrot and he has always cleaned my eyelashes, eyebrows, hair and every little thing he sees on my face. It is a gesture of affection that parrots make among themselves, and doing it to their human is a sign of attachment and love. Obviously I reciprocate, with scratches, caresses and a thousand attentions.

These birds are so beautiful. Look at those feathers! But, having said that, and even though I know that the bird likes you, it's still dangerous to have that huge beak around your eye like that. If the bird gets scared for a second, or sartled, you could lose an eye.
@LokeshThakur

their instinct is to fly away, not peck when in fear, worst case scenario it would fly away and take a shit on the fellow.

such trust and special time between Tequila and human. She's very beautiful as well. Does it hurt when they groom? Tequila beak is pretty strong and sharp.
@tequilamacaw
@tequilamacaw 5 лет назад
Sometimes a bit. She likes to nibble at any scab from a scratch etc., so that can smart a bit. Around my face/head, no...she's very gentle adn very precise - she can go eyelash by eyelash. It's a really weird feeling.
@tequilamacaw
@tequilamacaw 5 лет назад
But yes, there is a certain amount of risk. She can open brazil nuts with ease, so if she got angry or spooked, a trip to ER for stitches would likely be in order. When you have a bird, especially a big one, you learn to be calm :)

@@tequilamacaw Yup, learned that within a week of having my Hyacinth. All is good until something spooks them. And mine is still a bit of a scaredy cat, Im working on it but as it stands, it just stood there screaming and yelling at a dust bunny rolling across the floor after it broke loose off of the feather duster. Until I know it's calmed down I aint riskin lettin it near eyebrows or fingers for extended grooming times. Hyacinths are the largest breed and can easily remove a finger if not careful.
@tequilamacaw
@tequilamacaw 5 лет назад
@@Superintendent_ChaImers Indeed. Tequila is a bit on the small side for a B&G. I've worked with greenwings and scarlets, and those beaks can be quite terrifying. I don't know any GWM or SM that I would allow to do this. Still, a BGM beak is ample to break fingers, remove noses / eyes / ears, and leave a person needing reconstructive surgery. She can't crack coconuts like a hyacinth, but she can make short work of brazil nuts.

I wonder can she still fly even though she lost half of her feathers?
@tequilamacaw
@tequilamacaw 4 года назад
No, but since her flight feathers have filled in a bit now, she can fall a bit more gracefully. We're hoping the follicles can recover and that maybe one day she will be able to fly. Tiki loves to get up on high perches and do big wing flaps :)

What happened to her?
@tequilamacaw
@tequilamacaw 4 года назад
Tequila had one owner from 1985-2010. That man died in 2010 and Tequila was surrendered to a shelter. They kept her well, but she was sad and started to pluck. Once she started plucking, it was very hard to adopt her out to a new home. When I encountered her nearly 6 years later the plucking was almost-but-not-quite under control, but it was too late for her yellow body feathers. Now, in 2020, she doesn't really pluck any more, and her wings have grown back in a bit since 5 years ago, but her body feathers aren't coming back.

@tequilamacaw
@tequilamacaw 5 лет назад
That is a risk, for sure. In fact, the truth is that it is generally not a very good idea to have a parrot much bigger than a budgie or cockatiel near your face. Let me state unequivocally - this video does not show a recommended behaviour, this is a trained person and bird, do not try this at home, do not try this with any parrot that you do not know *VERY* well. Now, having said that, this human and I have a good relationship with a lot of trust. Still, I am only allowed to preen like this in very controlled circumstances where there is nothing to startle me. I have only ever bitten this human once, it was kind of an accident, and I felt really bad about it. Fortunately, it was a small bite, and nothing was hurt except some feelings.
