I've had my fair share of scary experiences over the last 4.5 years of full-time travel. But what just happened at the American border has just made it to my personal top 3 most terrifying ones. What a start to my Pan-American road trip...

As a native Texan, as soon as I saw you planned to go through Nuevo Laredo, and enter into Laredo, I was concerned. That is one of the most intense border crossings on our Texas/Mexico border. If you had gone through Matamoros, Mexico/Brownsville, TX, your experience would have been much better. Sorry that happened to you. You just happened to pick a very dangerous part of Mexico on your way here. I just found your channel tonight and I love your positive attitude.

This "always feeling under the pressure of time" really resonates with me. When I was 19, and travelled to Europe alone, I bought an old VW van in Amsterdam, driving it as far as Athens and the isle of Crete, and always I felt the urge to move on after only a few days in one place. Along the way I met countless travelers who would find a place they liked, and just settle in there, like the German man in this video. I thought these urges would die down as time went on, but they haven't. I suppose the nomadic soul craves movement, and the discovery of new people and places. Yet in that movement there are moments of pure bliss...

I had a similar experience going to Canada from America at international falls on a fishing trip crossing into Canada and there even worse than the us. So besides the search and alll the bs one guy in our group had pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in Wisconsin a couple months prior and Canada knew that and would not let him in. we crossed at three in the morning Canada said there was a small possibility they would let our friend in but they have to wait till nine in the morning. The supervisor came in and then it would be up to his discretion whether my friend get in or not. So to and our group stayed back in international Falls in one car, and the rest of us moved onto our fishing destinations. Upon speaking to a supervisor at 9 AM the supervisor decided that they would let my friend across the border to go fishing but he had to pay a $250 fine so he paid the fine, and he asked the supervisor what would happen in the future and the supervisor indicated that if he came back to Canada in the next five years the same process could happen again, and a different supervisor could reject him altogether. So Canada isn’t any better than US in fact are much worse, but somehow they have this reputation that they don’t deserve. Every time we caught crossed into the United States they just seem to be worried about once we told them we were fishing. How many fish did you have? How big were they? What kind of fish do you have and a couple of times we got our coolers surged, and one time one of our grove got busted and we had a pathfinder. I’d be interested to know what you think about this.

I'm from Laredo and the border crossing is no joke. It's not surprising the scrutiny that they put you under. That particular crossing is responsible for the seizure of millions of dollars worth of narcotics, cash and cash not to mention people on a daily basis. The Interstate 35 to Interstate 10 corridor is one of the most heavily used smuggling routes for both drugs and humans. The Border Patrol checkpoint that you subsequently drove through when leaving Laredo is also a hotspot for seizures. Laredo is a friendly place as is Texas but we just happen to live in a very dangerous area. Laredo is the largest inland port in the country and is the crossing point for billions in cargo from trucks to trains traveling north and south. The entire stretch of border here is frequently being infiltrated by the cartels. I'm glad you made the crossing through Tamaulipas safe. I've traveled through there and the feeling is not pleasant.

It’s dreadful! The same thing happened to me, but it got worse. They held me in an overcrowded underground cell for 4 days, then held me captive at a detention centre for 3 weeks, and made me fly back to England. I had done nothing wrong! I arrived by land, with a us friend, after volunteering as an English tutor in Mexico. The online us government website stated there’s be a 1-94W entry form to fill out. The guard at the entrance ok’d me to enter the building, next thing I knew I was being arrested for being in the building without a visa!? Absolute nightmare! I documented it on my yt channel and wrote a little book about it (detained, by Dee Lee) on Amazon, as therapy, and to hopefully she’d light and help others avoid such an ordeal! I’m glad you’re ok! @@eg348 Thank you EG. It was unreal, I couldn’t believe what was happening? One minute I was a tourist having a lovely time in Mexico, the next I was being treated like a bank robber! Handcuffed, shackled, locked in a tiny overcrowded cell with 14 other women all squashed together on the floor covered in tin foil blankets that looked like body bags! And that was only the beginning. What Eva went through was the tip of the iceberg, but still very shocked and traumatic. They seem to treat people as though they are guilty of a crime, until they find out they’re innocent, then they let them go, as if nothing happened! I still have nightmares. Hopefully the more people who share their stories, it will help to spread awareness.

So sorry to hear about your experience. I was born and grew up in Laredo. It wasn't always this way but after 9/11 the border became incredibly militarized. Also there is a 5 mile zone North and South of the border where usual protections (like freedom from unreasonable search and seizure) do not apply. Your experience was horrible but far from unusual. I hope your trip gets better. As a friend used to say "the most beautiful sight in the world is Laredo in your rear view mirror." @@morningrosie3684 It is not about blaming but simply choice. Within the European Union, I can travel without a passport (and this is why I no longer have a valid one). During most air trips I took in recent years, I did not even have to show any ID. Sometimes I did have to scan it at an automatic border gate. I can legally work in all EU countries with no excessive paperwork. So why bother about the security obsessed Unites States?

I know it has been a while since this all occurred, but I'm glad you got in and hope you don't have to repeat that experience again at other border crossings. Thanks for the great videos. Chuck 😊

That border incident is all part of being a traveler. Our family which consisted of naturalized Chinese Americans and Chinese Australians decided to go to Tijuana from Sacramento. My family all had accents as they migrated to America after high school or later. When presenting ourselves to border customs we declared we were US and Australian citizens. I got through because I was only 6 years old when I immigrated so I didn't have an accent and they let me enter. My brother and one sister (no passports) and another sister and brother in-law who had Australian passports were held and interrogated for several hours in an interview room before they decided to let them through. This was in the 90's so its worse now.

Thank God it's stricter now. The number of illegals in the US is unsustainable and fks over the citizens here.

My dad lost his cool cuz as a Chinaman we were routinely picked for random security screenings at airports after 9/11. They would literally make us stand aside at the gates and search us again.
