Absolutely. He knows he's the only game in town. He knows how much he spent on the bass...and he likes making people sweat a little, just 'cause he can. You can hear it in his voice. He probably spends a lot of time blowing dust off his inventory.
@@MagicalWingLT The shop would get more business if this guy sold it to someone who was honest and cared about the local music scene. You don't have to take every offer but not responding to customers and trying to use the MSRP as the selling price and then acting like you're giving a deal at the normal selling price that you'll find every where is common misleading practice for some of the smaller stores like this. Maybe if he treated customers better they would keep shopping there and he would be able to become a Fender or Gibson dealer, responding to online customers helps as well.
I feel like this episode is ahead of the entire guitar RU-vid game. You could start an entire undercover segment. That was thrilling. Date line Trogly style.
I was waiting on the shop owner doing or saying something totally inappropriate, I get that vibe with all hidden camera stuff, seriously nerve wracking for me!
Active ones sounds great, and are so smoth to play, but they could have some factory issues, minor details, that often dosnt change anything, but sometimes does
They are great and relatively inexpensive for what you get. I would put them side by side with the old Washburn basses in the same price range. It's a great bass guitar for starters too, it's affordable even if you are unsure if you child is going to abandon the instrument, but if they don't they can keep using it for years to come, as it is a quality product.
I always see pretty ibanez basses and I always grab them cuz they look great and usually sound good. But I can't get over the width of the first fret compared to the twelfth fret.
Courthouses always look good until you're standing in front of the judge lol. Really though a good looking courthouse is just a huge waste of taxpayer money.
I've known about Ibanez for at least 40 years, and I've known them to be quality instruments that nobody complains about. Thanks for your expert review here.
@@MagicalWingLT I think he is saying while he sold it for 365 before tax IRL he would not have made as much online even for the same price. It would not be a profitable transaction after the extra cost of Reverb's cut, with selling it in his own shop the cost of sale could be lower.
Yeah, I was gonna say just that. Very mahogany-like grain and color, though I've never seen nato as rich looking as the fancier genuine mahogany. I suspect a lot of Asian-made guitars advertised as mahogany are actually nato. I have a Yamaha acoustic with a nato neck that I absolutely adore. I agree that his town looks like a great place to live.
notwithstanding that you got a commission I think it's pretty awesome that you did a good thing for this guy and his son and took the time to set it up for him. your hearts in the right place man
I love these. Bass is not my strength but I got one of these to have around and play with- I think they’re a great bang for your buck. My electronics are different but are active... the pickups are branded “CAP”. Mine is circa 2011, burnt orange color.
Ahh, dealing with Steve! Lol! You got a good deal out of him! I used to always buy my gear from this store and he lost me when he dropped Fender. But I understand. Bryan isn't a big music town.
I am new to the channel and absolutely amazed at the quantity of well-produced content you churn out. And from the note at the beginning of the video, you have a newborn? I don't know how you do it. Very impressive.
I have the very same one in the Orchid Burst. I am a rank beginner but this one won out over about 30 other models in the shop and it looks fantastic. I'm super happy with it.
Cool Bass, great content Austin, I really enjoy this. Again and congrats, hope you and the Misses are able to get a good night's rest soon. A little time away from home and shopping at a Music Store sounds great, you have a Dream Job Sir!
This was a great adventure, Austin! Way-to-go on getting the bass for your customer! I can see why he wanted that purple burst. It's a beaut of a color! I love Ibanez. I have a Classical/electric that plays great.
Those angled tuners make them easier to work with. I bought an SR300E two years ago, for where the jack output is. I now have two and a 600E. They're lovely basses to play. The only differences between the 300E and 400E are the body woods, the colour and the cost. The tap switch is humbuckers/single coil/single with more bass.
That bass has sweet looks and sound. Like your variety in video’s now, going beyond the somewhat tiring Gibson thing. Good job your honesty and detailed reviews keep me coming back!
Wow dude you scored on that Bass guitar! I've been playing an Ibanez soundgear sr500 actually the old SR 500 series and it's been my favorite bass guitar of all time. Mine was made in Korea these new ones are made in China and I really haven't played the new ones but I expect them to be just as good maybe better I see they redesigned the battery control box as mine had none and you have to remove the entire back plate to replace the battery. I also see they redesigned the input jack to be more like that of a Stratocaster rather than an end Barrel Jack it goes bad all the time. However the growl and the play ability of the Ibanez Sr I find it better than my $3,000 precision bass. You rock man if I ever decide to get a new Sr series Ibanez I'll come to you hahaha rock on mr. Troglodyte
So true, in spite of being supported locally our only music store in town closed down a year or so ago. The closest music store is now over an hour's drive for me.
Yeah even the famous Denmark Street in London, which was basically all music shops and recording studios, and tons of people like Bowie and Hendrix recorded there, is dying and turning into coffee shops If you ever are in London you have to go to Denmark Street, it's got one of the richest musical histories of anywhere in the world. Go before it dies
Damn Trog! That is a really versatile bass! Tones GALORE.. it looks very comfortable.. the electronics in the thing are almost scary..kinda reminded me of what l felt opening the rear cover on my DZ LaVoce! I'm not into purple but it is a really nice looking bass.. great concept "Secret Shopper" there.. not bad and pretty entertaining.. it kinda beats watching bubble wrap flying everywhere!😂 Thanks..keep up the creativity.
Work at a small music store, can confirm. Fender and Gibson are impossible to work with nowadays as a small business. Ibanez is the best well-known electric guitar brand for small businesses.
Austin you know i am not real a Gibson guy my hands are way to huge for the scale. You really are a great guy and i look so forward to your show. I have learned so much from you about the history of Gibson. You give so much and often barley make money on some deal. I like guitar of the day at Norms but your creatively edited video are no of the chain. I never miss a show.
I bought an Ibanez SR600 for £500 a year or so ago and it is gorgeous, the neck is silk smooth and is a dream to run your fingers up and down on. I've played bass' that cost six times as much and didn't feel or sound as good. Great budget instruments!
I have an SR300AF best bass I could find for under 400 bucks. Extremely versatile. It can sound like a pbass a Ric or even a stingray. It's like smashing them all into one! I love it!
I own one, bass is not my first instrument but I now know stuff! Thank you and it sounds like someone needs to look at the neck as I have a bit of buzz, cheers Peter
Great episode and really good of you to go to the trouble of sorting this out. I often wonder why so many people in retail are a bit lacking in social skills, but TBH I used to own a few shops and it put me off dealing with the public for life, so maybe it's not that big a surprise. It's nice to talk to knowledgeable people about stuff you're both interested in, but by the time you answer the same dumb question for the 500th time the milk of human kindness has well and truly curdled. Never turn a hobby into a (customer-facing) business. Think of the deals you've had go wrong in your business and how you felt. Now standardise that experience at around one a day.
Ibanez bases are a steal, plus the necks are super fast. I picked up a sr400 for $125 with a case a few years back. Pro tip: pick closer to the bridge when your playing with a pick. It keeps your picking more even and wont fart out when your fretting stuff as easy.
Great video Trogly. I looked at ibanez for my girlfriend got the gibson dc tribute les paul bass for Christmas she likes a short scale but ibanez really has some great stuff at cheaper price points. Worried!
reminds me of a shop we used to have here. The guy was authorized to get just about anything. Most of what was in his store was jay turser guitars and things of the like. I asked him why he didn't carry more (actually ordered a heritage golden eagle through him while i was there) and he said "most of my customers are moms and kids. I make money if the kids take lessons, and mom's happy if the guitar doesn't cost too much". He'd usually have one or two martin guitars, used or new, as he was an AD, but that was about it. The guy makes just a couple of bucks on that guitar, even at 391 with tax, and hope that he does better on other guitars, because floor space for a year for probably $30-$40 of profit is *rough*.
I’m a big fan of the channel but I’m mainly a bassist who plays an SR300. I knew realistically I’d never see it reviewed on here but this is close enough so I’ll take it!
Nato is a sub species of mahogany, afaik. It has quite similar grain structure, is colored like maple and weighs like balsa. Due to these properties, it's what Epiphone used for their Korina Explorer and V series guitars, even though they said Korina in the specs. It was just Nato, painted in trans yellow.
This was my favorite episode ever ever I say ever hahaha no joke forreal trog you're a straight-up Stone Cold 007 and I loved it cool guitar also impressive
I'm not sure about the current models, but the previous SDGR models had issues with the bridges breaking. I worked as a repair tech for a while and the previous models came in all the time with broken bridges. The alloy they used was a brittle composite, airy - almost like a cinderblock. The saddles and edge of the bridge would just snap. No bending, just a solid break like a section of a Hershey Bar. Turned me off from ever buying one.
Recently I got a soundgear Ibanez bass myself and it's awesome, first experience with bass, 5 string active pickups, it was easy to setup and the tuning stability was near good, could improve but not a huge issue by any means
I'm a Bass player, I'm a Jazz bass kind of guy, when I record I use P basses, But I got my hands on one of these basses about 3 years ago, and actually have used this bass in a different color, on more recordings then my Fenders, in the past 3 years. Still LOVE my Fenders, But these Basses Sound Amazing in the Studio. You can almost get that Warwick / Sting ray Sound for a Fraction of the price.
Cool video. I have an Ibanez SR300E bass and I use it on all my videos and music demos. Its my only bass and I find it extremely versatile and sounds awesome recorded direct in a mix.
I own a 5 string similar to that one but flat black. Awesome player. I just shimmed the neck last night due to the saddles decked as low as possible but the action stayed high. All good now.
I don’t think I’ve ever owned a bad Ibanez. I’m sure they exist. But my experience has always been positive with Ibanez. From the 80’s until now. They build consistently good guitars. Everything generally works well and even the pickups are good. I’m mostly a Gibson and ESP player these days. But I would have no problem buying another Ibanez based on past experience.
I have this bass in the dragon burst. I like it; it sounds good. The body shape is nice because it helps with the balance. I don't get any neck dive. I got my used from my local Music-Go-Round. I paid $299. I got a better deal than you did. 😛
Ibanez is a real bang for the buck bass and guitar manufacturer, no doubt. I have had a bunch of both their guitars and basses, great stuff for the low dough, ever since the 1990s. I have an Ibanez AM93 in the vintage yellow quilted top, that I don't play nearly enough. Forget the questionable Epiphone ES-339, get an AM93, much better small body ES guitar for the money, although it doesn't have the coil splitting. The tone, looks and playability are so good, you won't care.
I believe there was a model by Peavey that you could get with a Kahler bass trem, and you can also buy the bass Kahler yourself if you wanna retrofit your existing bass with a trem bridge. Hipshot also make their own bass trem that installs like a regular Strat trem, but requires far more body routing than the Kahler.
Hey thanks folks! I hope I didn't make any of you do any research. I was asking for curiosity sake. I'd never seen one as far as I know. I wonder how I missed Les Claypool? I definitely need to pay closer intention.
Most people Don't realize that a Deal can be a WIN-WIN, where all parties get what they want, you don't have to Brutalize a Seller or Buyer, just because You Can. Great Video and lesson in how to ask for a More Reasonable Price
*My theory of the funky woods used nowadays is that they always been used in asian made instruments, but they used to just call it rosewood and mahogany before the CITES updates a couple years back. I know this was the case back in the day with Japanese made instruments. The wood still looks and has similar tonal properties so it's really just marketing.*
no, you don't have to be nice to a local business that's being disrespectful to a potential customer online, and even goes so far as to talk about said customer to another in store customer. That store has a pretty lousy owner. I picked up one of these a couple of months ago for $300 CAD, which is about $250 USD. But mine is Red Burst, the neck is not stained tho, so the whole neck is light color wood. You also don't need a straight jack to play it, a right angled one still fits.
Got an iron label that's a couple years old. Made of seven exotic woods. Plays awsome. Only thing I wish it had a floyd rose or an upper end trem. Got it for $400 which is great since they retail a bit higher. No it's not for sale just relaying my experience with Ibanez.
I got an Ibanez SR505e not too long ago and it's actually a pretty good bass for the money. The one I have is a higher end but it plays very well and sounds pretty good.
Either all finger style or all pick when you make p/u and EQ comparisons. A pick gives you a much more aggressive attack than fingers do, so you gotta do one or the other for an honest comparison.
