Those "sound effects" come from Brian May's Red Special guitar connected through a treble-booster to the Deacy Amp. Using these, Brian can produce sounds reminiscent of various orchestral instruments, such as violin, cello, trombone, clarinet, or even vocals! The Red Special guitar was designed and built by Brian (Queen lead guitarist) with his father when he was around 17 using mostly items they found around the May household ( i..e. old bicycle' parts were made into a tremolo, the tremolo arm is from a bicycle saddlebag holder with his mother's plastic knitting needle tip, his mother-of-pearl buttons became the frett positions inserts, and a 100-year-old wooden fireplace surround was hand formed to become the guitar neck). Brian's father was an electrical engineer and Brian is wicked smart - he has a Ph.D. in Astrophysics. The Deacy amp was built by John Deacon (Queen bass guitarist) from old radio parts he found in a trash bin. He reworked the electronics creating a guitar amplifier that he fit inside an old speaker cabinet powering it with a 9-volt battery. The amplifier had no volume or tone controls and for most of its history, it was never broken and thus never repaired. John built it to use at home to practice since he left his regular amp at Queen's rehearsal site. One day, John brought the amp to rehearsal to show the band, and Brian was fascinated by it. He asked to try the amp out and they were all surprised by the sounds that the combination of the Red Special guitar, treble-booster, and Deacy Amp could make. Brian used it on most of Queen's songs. BTW - John has a degree in electrical engineering.
@@ellab8897 John has a First Class Honors Degree in Electronics, which is a degree that is awarded to a student who has accumulated an average percentage grade of 70% or above during their years at university.
@@Sassypaws4927- Thanks for clarifying what John’s having a degree in electronics means. I’ve known for quite awhile his degree is in electronics, which is distinct from electrical engineering, but I haven’t really known what John’s degree entails.
John Deacon was an excellent bass player, it’s a great loss that he retired in 97. He was the secret weapon of the band, he didn’t write many songs, but they all are great. Freddie really enjoyed to sing this number and he wanted to match John's imagination so much that he sang during the recording process until his vocal cords started to bleed. Pls, check out John's Spread Your Wings, it's another vibe, a classical ballad.
John wrote over a dozen great songs including some of their biggest hits and even more cowritten with Freddie. His bass lines were iconic even when simple like "Under Pressure". His bass in "Millionaire Waltz" is unbelievable. I saw them in concert and his bass blew your socks off! Some of his songs, "Friends will be friends, I want to break free, You're my best friend, You and I, Need your lovin' tonight, One year of love, If you can't beat them, In only seven days, Who needs you. I believe this song was at least their 2nd biggest seller and hit soul, black, rock, disco, just about every chart there was..
@@davidmacfarlane1763 Oh yeah, they were a massive rhythm machine for just being two skinny little guys! I don't know what Roger Taylor's like now, (apart from looking like Rocker Santa,) but back then he was this aggressive little bundle of energy behind the kit, and Disco Deacy was the king of perfect hooks, custom amps, and fun moves. I understand completely why he retired from public life, but he's still easy to miss.
Deacy wasn't much of a singer, but he wrote two of the most memorable bass riffs in rock music. He and Freddie loved the song, while Brian and Roger absolutely hated it for the disco vibe. Thankfully, Freddie and Deacy prevailed to create the biggest US hit of their career.
@@rosemorris7912, @neuralmute - John’s singing voice was good, but being in a band with Freddie, Roger, and Brian, he understandably wasn’t confident about it. 😕 Thankfully, he was confident in his songwriting! It sure helped Freddie and Deacy prevail about ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ when Michael Jackson insisted that Queen release the song as a single. MJ knew a hit when he heard one! @neuralmute - I’m adding onto your fun and true description of Roger: he was this (adorably cute) aggressive little bundle of energy behind the kit.
Deacon not only wrote this song but also played the instruments in the recording including the funky lead guitar part because Brian said that wasn't a style he was used to. Live he was much more animated but he shunned the camera content to be in the background. His iconic bass lines are still employed by the current incarnation of Queen.
This is the original song the sound effects are Brian’s guitar which he made with his Dad when he was a teenager he still plays it to this day the Red Special x great reaction x Tie Your Mother Down from Montreal 1981, A Kind of Magic from Wembley 1986, Who Wants To Live Forever also from Wembley just a few suggestions x
All the sound effects are Brian's guitar. Freddie sang the song in the studio until his throat bled to get it just right. Michael Jackson talked them into releasing the song, Brian and Roger didn't like it, but Freddie and John the writer of the song did, and they released it and it became a monster hit, big time. Great reaction.
I think it was just one more time Brian and Roger disrespected John, they didn’t value him as a “real” member of Queen. This song grossed more in the states than any other song Queen released, and you wonder why he didn’t go back.
@@nancyblumberg4612 you're right it was a monster hit. I think Roger and Brian respected him, but they didn't like that type of music for Queen, but the band was always delving into all sorts of genres. They liked the song later when the money poured in.🤣
John Deacon (bass) wrote this Queen anthem, that bassline is iconic. It is a top selling song for Queen, I love it! Those sound effects are Brian and John on their guitars. Thank you for reacting to it.
In an interview with Brian May, the lead guitar, he said Freddie sang the song til he bled. It was MJ that convinced Queen to release this song as a single. Became their best selling record.
Freddie would sing every song as if it were his own, that was his job as lead singer, John wrote this one, they would all write and then make it so it suited Freddie and how the writer or writers wanted it to come across, they've all written hits together and individually
Lol when my grandmother passed, we were at the graveside starting to lower her coffin. Someone nearby (not part of the service) turned their radio on and the chorus to this song started blaring. I like to think she was having one last laugh with us.
Loving your reactions, thanks! I recommend you check out Queen's performance of White Queen live at Hammersmith 1975 (official video), Stone Cold Crazy live at the Rainbow, and Love of My Life live at Wembley 1986.
Thirteen years ago, I 'discovered' Queen and Freddie Mercury... and I have quite fortunately fallen in love with them. The day I discovered them, I couldn't pull away from my computer. I had no idea they wrote SO many songs we hear pretty much every single day. I binge-watched & listened for THREE YEARS and over the last ten years, I've still not found anything comparable to Queen & Freddie, with the exception of Lady Gaga and Garth Brooks. Believe it or not, Garth Brooks saw Freddie & Queen live and was so blown away by the charisma, that he emulated Freddie's stage presence. If you ever have the chance to check out some of Garth's live performances, you'll be shocked at how Garth runs around, and it'll scream 'Freddie' style. Welcome to the Queen club! *edit: Although you really can't do a reaction video with Garth Brooks' material.. he's pretty big on enforcing copyrights. For a while, it was hard to find anything on the internet!
Freddie wanted JUST that very reaction - "he was feeling it!" Queen had great fun with this live (Wembley, 1986). Bet you also know "Under Pressure" - go directly to that live at Wembly.
Freddie puts everything he has and more into every song or concert! All four are legends in their own right. Study up on Queen and find out more about them and you will be amazed.
Great reaction! When this song first came out Black radio stations played it and folks had no idea it was Queen. When they found out it was Queen they was like “you mean those white dudes that sung Bohemian Rhapsody?!” because that’s all everyone knew them from 🤣😂💀
Steve walks warily down the street With the brim pulled way down low Ain't no sound but the sound of his feet Machine guns ready to go Are you ready? Hey, are you ready for this? Are you hanging on the edge of your seat? Out of the doorway the bullets rip To the sound of the beat, yeah
I love this song!! Both my boys wrestled from age of 6-18. All the boys were allowed a song to come out to and my youngest chose this song. They were both first place wrestlers in the district, regional and state. He loved this song, very befitting for him lol
crazy story. Michael Jackson and queen were friends. Michael really like Freddie. He would go the the LA Forum when Queen Played there to see their concerts. Queen played this for Michael but said they were not going to release it. Michael told them they needed to release it and they did. Michael and Freddie did some songs together but they are demos' because they never got finish them. so they never were released.
Queen Live Aid performance and Freddie's command of the audience is legendary. Please react to the whole Live Aid performance, it's only a few songs. Freddie is at his best👍👍🌟🌟
Besides Freddie’s drop dead gorgeous looks, his moves were out of this world sexy. He drew the attention of the women AND men. Sexiest man I’ve ever seen!!
New to your channel, loving your sincere reactions to The Legendary Queen! Their top live performance you must check out is the « Live Aid - Queen Full Set HQ » and watch the whole 22min, epic, sheer bliss. To realise the extent of Queen’s impact on people, watch “ Green Day Bohemian Rhapsody 2017 “… and wish you were there.
You make me smile so wide watching you dancing in your chair with such a happy face. It's great to know that all that amazing music from the 50's and later from back in the day is still relevant and appreciated decades later.
Queen believed in making the live experience special for their fans. They didn't try to copy what they'd done on records because, as Freddie observed, if that's all they wanted, they could just stay home and listen to the records. As for his strut, one of Freddie's good friends called him a peacock on stage, while Freddie referred to himself as a Persian popinjay (which also struts).
One thing I LOVE in this video is Roger Taylor chewing gum as he drums! The fact of chewing gum is like yawning In a way, if that makes sense....like this is no big deal. I love them all...& your channel rocks!
I think you would appreciate "Rock the Kasbah" by the Clash. Great song, also still relevant today. The video will crack you up. I bought the full Queen, and yes. that whole song was always that long, but for radio broadcasts they only played a smaller portion of the song.
Yep, this was the single version, so would have been what you heard on the radio or music tv. Btw, all 4 band members wrote songs that reached number 1. A feat not even the Beatles could match. This song, unsurprisingly, was written by the bassist, John Deacon.
John Deacon - the bass player wrote this - it went to n. 1 in the charts. They are all menders of the songwriters Hall of Fame! 80.000 get up on their feet!
Hey hey....I love your channel!! ....your reactions. Have you heard an early Queen song entitled "Killer Queen "? I recommended it....just sayin it's a favorite.
Lead guitar and vocals and keyboard is Sir Dr. Brian May , phd< drummer and vocals Sir Roger Taylor > Bass and upright bass and backing vocals John Deacon an electrical engineer who designed and built the amps the guys used. The half mic stand is Freddie’s signature when they were just starting out and struggling for every pence he went to pull the mic free during a show and it broke in half. They couldn’t afford to replace it so Freddie being Freddie ran with it and never looked back.
Hey Greg, I’m new to your channel. I’m not big on subscribing to channels but I did to yours. I like you’re genuine reaction to different styles of music and you’re likable. Not sure if you’ve done these. See what think… 1. In a gadda da vida (supposed to be in the garden of eden) by Iron butterfly. I’m a 60’s kid so psychedelic/ acid rock was big. This one is long but give it your ear. 2. American woman- by Steppenwolf 3. Time ( does anybody really know what time it is) -by Chicago 4. Renegade - by Styx 5. State of shock- Mick Jagger & Michael Jackson (from ‘84) 6. Brandy - The Looking Glass
Very nice reaction. This is the original version and also the official video to answer... Keep discovering Queen and other bands of this time from UK like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, The Police or David Bowie... UK is the best place for music, I'm a real fan. Love from France 🇫🇷😘
