Empath likely. He is using body language to connect with the people on the other end. In stead if squinting, or furrow brows (which also may be a reaction to not hearing well), leaning in shows more openness. I loved this detail too.

We've only reached 27000 cases of COVID across Australia (a country with 25million people) and even though South Australia is back in lockdown, we have been doing really well... Particularly when you look at America's almost 12 million cases.

bilingual people can usually nails a broader range of accents. Probably because they switch back and forth between different tonal ranges. I have always liked the mainstream australian accent but being a non native english speaker, its 100% out of reach.

Linguists usually break them up into three categories; broad (Steve Irwin), cultivated (Cate Blanchett), and general (Julia Gillard) There are also other ethnolects and associated accents but they aren’t necessarily ‘native’ so people disregard them.

Yeh that’s cause the American accent is actually quite easy to learn (middle American, LA type accent) compared to the Australian which is a mix of English, indigenous, and just weird Aussie words. It’s commonly considered one of the hardest accents to learn for actors and stuff

@Jamie c I wrote my paper on Australian English when I was studying linguistics at university. Yes, I can confirm this. Australian English various accents aren't as vastly different in character as say American of British accents. The variations are more subtle and slight. A good way to define uniqueness would be a South Australian accent but take a Victorian accent. People from Victorian have a more breathy aspect of their accent. Many actors from Melbourne talk with breathy Aussie accents like Samuel Johnson. Also social class effects someone's accent more in Australia than it does American accents which focus more on geographical regions. But yes there are regional differences in accent with each Aussie state.

When you do the Aussie accent, you are always 'smirking' and I think that's how you shift your 'center' (sorry... centre :P) of where the sound comes from in your mouth (in aussie it's actually through the nostrils :P). I can do a good american accent but really struggle with the Aussie, can you maybe make a video or just explain how you 'switch'? how is it different the way you produce the vowels etc?

It's true, I'm good at imitation through listening too. I'm an Aussie but have fooled a native Japanese speaker into thinking I'm Japanese from my imitation of Thier language 😂 it's hilarious, I know very little Japanese, but if I'm asked to pronounce something in another language I usually can. I heard them talking about you on the news actually, and had to do a double-take! (Aussie here). Everyone is still so excited lol Honestly no one has been able to get it so convincingly before, we're so happy 😂 And your accent is not only Australian, but specifically Victorian! (Melbourne) Each state is a tiny bit different- South Australia is a bit more drawling, Queensland is more nasal and they extend their 'oo' sound, New South Wales is more your typical 'Aussie' you hear in movies..

Country NSW is typical Hollywood accent. And the further north you go in QLD, the more nasal and "g'day mate" it gets (born in VIC, have lived in SA, QLD, NSW, and been to ACT). I knew a guy from SA, met him in Far Nth QLD, and couldn't tell he was from Adelaide cause the accent was so similar
