I was reported to and called by the FAA, here's what happened. Also just for the record, I completely understand that the FAA's goal is to help keep everyone safe. I want to do everything I can to fly safely and responsibly, I hope this video will help educate people and help them not make the same mistakes I did. Thank you!

As someone who flies a drone and also flies in small private planes in Alaska, I can relate to both sides. On one hand I'd like to fly my drone wherever I want and film whatever I want. On the other hand I realize that even a 249 gram drone going through a plastic windshield of a Cessna at a critical stage of flight (takeoff/landing) or a small helicopter hitting it at over 100mph can get people killed or at least injured. There is a saying that "regulations in aviation are written in blood" and unfortunately not too many people that have a drone have appreciation for this. The drones got regulated because people flying them were completely ignorant and were doing stupid crap. I've seen people flying a drone in a park right under the approach path of a Class C airport and they didn't understand what the big deal was. So now we get regulated.
@michaelmatthews6421
@michaelmatthews6421 3 года назад
Regulations in aviation are written in blood cause of the deaths. Drone flights have cause literally zero deaths. Literally! Granted some are stupid with their safety when it comes to drones, but same can be said with guns, and yet very little regulation there. They are making rules for "what if" situations, not actual situations. There has been no risk assessment done on this. Technically if you jump you are in FAA airspace. Think about that
@lifeupnorth9385

@@michaelmatthews6421 What you're saying is we should wait until someone dies? Kind of like NASA waited until Columbia crash to investigate ice falling off the external tank which was determined to not pose a real threat beforehand... I once was flying my drone near Camp Smith in Honolulu. It's a U.S. Marines installation and has a giant American flag near the outskirts of the base, which you could see from miles away. Anyway, I never flew inside the installation, just outside of it and wanted to capture footage of the giant flag. I was reported by one of the people living in the area and two agents came knocking on my door and asked me a few questions. I just told them I make music videos of places around Honolulu and they left and I never heard from anyone again. However, I am sure I am on some watch list somewhere.

When you look in windows resource monitor nothing suspicious is going on. They might get a few low res thumbnails, but that would be about it. Dji want to be a respected professional drone manufacturer worldwide, and they're doing really well in all sectors including the film industry. Doubt they'd want a lawsuit that would seriously damage their business worldwide. Anyway, the national security services in all countries will no doubt be all over this already, and if they found anything suspicious going on imports would be banned instantly, and this is not happening!

@@RailFlicks DJI drones save photos regularly during the flight. Whether you take pictures or film or not, at the same time. That DJI is flagged as a security risk is because these images that are saved in a folder that you really have to look for to find, can be uploaded to DJI. Personally, I sometimes fly around outside military areas and nuclear power plants and then always point my nose at the drone away from the areas. In Sweden you can get heavy fines or thrown into jail, if you take pictures of a military base with a drone.

It's kind of interesting. In the ATC tower near my work, when we were given a tour, I noticed a drone detector. When I enquired about it, I was told that it was to detect drones within X KM of the airfield. I imagine that if needed, there would be a way to identify the serial numbers of each individual drone and review their registration (including DJI accounts). I heard of a story of someone who flew within the restricted airspace and had Milipol show up at his house to give him a talk. Where I live, I usually cannot fly during weekdays as I do not want my drone to be eaten by an F35. In my Country, it is definitely worth registering your drones with CASA, getting accredited and learning about airspace. Happy flying.

Birds sucked into an aircraft intake can take an engine out. Even a small drone can do damage to a small aircraft. There’s a magic mini that was recently caught near a helipad while a helicopter was landing in L.A. These things may seem like toys, due to the lightweight construction, but they can be a risk to actual lives. The rules are to keep us all safe, and secure. In my neighborhood in Florida I always see law enforcement and news choppers flying below 500ft, on Flightradar24 they sometimes show flying around 300ft. whose fault is it going to be when a helicopter slams into a drone? It still amazes me how they are allowed fly under 500 ft in urban neighborhoods where someone like me can be flying a drone at around 400ft

Ever been zooming through a street and a small animal runs out and you can't do anything but hope for the best? Well, that's an aircraft hitting a drone except it could have far worse consequences. Knowing these things like air traffic patterns, weather, etc. is something all drone pilots should know or study, and IMO is not a crazy requirement to require drone pilots to know. That being said, the chance at something running out in front of you, much like a drone getting hit, is small in retrospect. Glad the agents were kind and all got sorted out. Great video and hope many follow suit to register their drones and get Part 107 if they are for profit. Always visited Treasure Island growing up and love the area down there!

I get a feeling of Deja Vu with all of this, as it reminds me of the CB radio craze in the late 1970's and the push by the FCC to license everyone. I, like yourself, always wish to be on the right side of the law and so back then I applied for and paid my $5.00 to receive my 5 year CB license. % years later I contacted the FCC to find out about renewal and by that time the fad has died out and they no longer were requiring licenses for civilian CB operators. Sooo- let's see if in 10 years there is any FAA policing of the drone issue??? Also wonder if it weren't for the Covid compplications if they would have had anybody reviewing YT videos to catch "violators"??

Word. I had a CB radio that leaked into some guys equipment. I was contacted by the FCC with demands to get my radio checked out for EMI and power and to have the document sent by a qualified repairman, the same guy who tunes my radio. Turns out that the 1980s had a lot of poorly shielded telephones. Odd that because both my neighbor and I were obliterated by the radio station in the late afternoon. Nothing was ever done about that. If you are a government employee, you've got to spend that money coming down on you or lose your funding.

The goal IMO is that people just need to ignore the regulations enmasse. This forces the FAA to simplify the rules and use common sense. It's like IRS and taxes. The IRS knows if they increase income tax too much, people will cheat and consequentially they will lose more tax money than they gain.

What interests me is what about everyone posting footage who aren't part of the YPP and as such, cannot make money. However, there are still ads on all videos on RU-vid. Does that mean RU-vid is violating federal aviation regulations? Of course they are technically a "platform" not a publisher but the point still stands. They make money off of footage from UASs hand over fist. Edit: yes the written exam is practically the same as the private pilot exam. Lots of stuff to know.
