We are experiencing some rather warm temps over the next few weeks at the end of summer and into early fall here in south-western Ontario. I set out hoping to have an enjoyable and fun evening on the water at my local lake/reservoir, only to find out that the water was overrun with giant algae plumes and slicks. It was disgusting!
I've been paddling this lake for several years now and have never seen the water this bad. Yes, there have been areas where algae would congregate, but nothing like this. I don't know if it has anything to do with the warm temperatures we are having, in combination with the lower water levels? Although the reservoir begins to drain down in September, I found it unusual to see it already down a few feet this early in the month. I have paddled through October and into November with decent water levels, enough to make it a good paddle.
I doubt I'll be back out here until next Spring. It's just that bad!
