One thing that is way underrated is the height adjustable stand. I have a display mounted on the height adjustable stand on a desk in my van. The base is attached to the desk when I am moving, and the thing is rock steady driving down a bumpy dirt road. I have used several different VESA arms, and never found one that would hold its position so well.

I've never had an issue needing to raise or lower 27" 5K iMac previously. I couldn't justify an extra $400 just for a height adjustability option. I'm perfectly fine raising lowering my chair and desk need be. I understand you can't always raise or lower the keyboard, but I'm not picky there. I just got the base tilt model Studio Display today for $1,300 brand new. That was mentally the sweet spot for me. If Apple charged $1,299 by default, these would be incredible displays for the price.

Everything Apple is the only safe choice to mate with something else Apple. That said, I hate Apple. But better displays than Apple’s that are made by other manufacturer’s are tuned and tested regularly with Windows running machines. It’s not true that any data transmission format is consistant no matter which devices are transmitting and receiving. Things like changes in firmware, chip substitutions, circuit design, and changes to macos can easily take a device from Mac-compatible to non Mac-compatible within the lifetime of a device. The hours of troubleshooting and reading forums aren’t worth it. The only sure path to lifetime compatibility is to jbuy a 1700 Mac Studio display., and start stacking books to put it on. Not even a visa mount. Apple is a racket.
@BojanBojovic
@BojanBojovic 8 месяцев назад
I agree completely, the convenience with buying this to use with other Apple products is great. Auto brightness and 5K is important for me so I am looking at this as well, however I do not find it accurate enough so you do not need to measure it, it still needs some measurement and calibration. But, the biggest problem for me personally is that I need to think about Windows platform as well, as I need that as well for my workflow and with Apple ARM chips and no BootCamp, together with this display not working well with Windows makes everything really difficult.
@DesignedbyKirk
@DesignedbyKirk 8 месяцев назад
Absolutely, like any monitor, it still is better practice to calibrate regardless. I'm not sure how well Windows integrates with the display, but it may not be fantastic

That's not because the Studio Display is good (for the price) but because Apple has intentionally bricked macOS scaling for standard resolutions (like 4k). Anyways, I support Apple for doing this, because iSheeps will keep buying whatever they do.
@ThomasVanhelden
@ThomasVanhelden 11 месяцев назад
@@Chopper153 Windows doesn't even offer decent scaling on any monitor size... As always, Windows has gone for the compatibility/one-size-fits-all approach. It's half-decent on some resolutions but isn't good on any resolution above 1080p. I use an M2 Pro 16" MacBook Pro as my primary work machine. I built a new 3k Windows gaming desktop two months ago, and I regularly need to use Windows at work as well. I currently have two 4K 27" monitors, and I don't like how they scale with my MacBook, but I don't like how they scale with my Windows PC either. We have massive widescreens at work, and the scaling is terrible on MacOS and Windows. The way I see it, I'm happy that Apple at least offers perfect scaling at some resolutions.

Absolutely right. Looked other monitors for months. Then just went for it. The total package for a Mac mini user is not only great, it is essential. I've scaled it to 2048 x 1152. It just looks perfect. Ideal font size for me and still just as sharp. Colour accuracy has seriously haunted me for the last 20 years since I started photography. No more of that nonsense! The only other options for colour accuracy cost twice as much or more. So the price is extremely justified. I'd say the Studio Display is the one Apple product that is actually competitively priced.

So glad I saw this video! I’ve been wondering about what monitor I should pair with my M2 ultra with great distress 😂. As a premiere pro user, I use the rec709 color gamut and I’m really trying to take the color in my video work to new heights. Ik you said you use divinci, but in your experience, do you find that the Studio Display represents the colors in your edit accurately? Did you need to calibrate the monitor before using it?
@DesignedbyKirk

What a great setup! In the future I’m keen to get a desktop to have a more dedicated setup. I can’t speak for Premiere as I use Davinci Resolve and FCPX. Davinci I’ve had to do some tweaking, but I’ve got colours to match perfectly in the edit. But FCPX, it’s set out of the box. I haven’t calibrated the monitor, it’s whatever came out of the factory. But in a few months time, I most likely will, just in case of any shifts

Thanks so much for your quick reply! I should have been more clear when I mentioned “presets”. I was actually referring to Apple’s built in settings for the display under preferences. For instance, their one that’s calibrated for photography. They have others with color and brightness calibrated for video, etc. I guessing by your answer, though, that you used the native, out-of-the-box calibration. I understand what you mean by doing your own grading, I was just interested in your starting point, like when you first import your footage into you computer.

@DesignedbyKirk Год назад
Great question and Thankyou. I really don’t like the look of matte displays. Even the one on the studio one, it really degrades the sharpness of the image in my opinion. I don’t get reflections, but mostly keep my windows shut behind me. They are frosted windows and even before this setup, they are never really flattering to have open. I chose the glossy as I wanted maximum quality, contrast and clarity

This was just what I need. I have had a 27inch iMac for quite a few years and have always loved the display, plus I love the fact that it has integrated speakers., saving the issue of having something else plugged in. From your video it looks like this is going to be the way forwards for me now as I look to upgrading. I haven’t scrolled through everyone’s responses(apologies) but another enticing factor from what I have read Is that the speakers in the display are even better than the iMac , and therefore a another plus for this monitor. Why is that important - well I like to play back slideshows and videos I have created and the iMac does a good job for my needs. I hadn’t thought about the ports on the back of this display so your review highlighted a very useful factor - thank you. I think I’m going to bite the bullet and go for this . The problem now is what road to go down next in my upgrading - Mac mini pro or look at a Studio . Looks like I’m going to have to raid the piggy bank.

Really great and helpful video Kirk! I've literally watched it a few times and read through all your comments and your responses, i think i'm sold here. Yes it's still over my budget for a monitor as someone who's not a photography/videography professional (just a hobby), but all your points mentioned are really the pain points im facing right now with my dell monitor. Also, instead of getting another cheaper option like Benq or LG, i think i'll probably upgrade to an apple display eventually, so might as well go for it now haha! Question, been thinking about getting a trackpad+mouse combo too, what are your use cases and do you think the trackpad is worth getting? Thanks!
@DesignedbyKirk
@DesignedbyKirk 9 месяцев назад
Glad you enjoyed it! Think of it as a long term investment you’ll keep for 5+ years in the end. I’ve been using the MX master combo with the Apple keyboard + numpad and trackpad for timeline scrolling / gesture based movement on my right. The trackpad is pretty essential for me, and I often feel slower when working without it. The one drawback I found with the numpad being on the keyboard is that I have to spread my arms a bit longer to use the mouse which isn’t entirely ergonomic. But apart from that, I’m very happy!

When you use this for work purposes it is definitely worth an investment as it makes getting to work much more desirable, just because you will want to work on that display. Definitely not a cheap purchase, but at apple you don't pay for the product but for value, and viewing it from that angle as a business owner, it has definitely helped us creating better client results and allowed us to work on it for longer without struggling with fatigue.

You know, for colour grading one could get a proper 100% sRGB monitor like one of those ProArt models, which are sold with a colour calibration report, then you can further tune it with a Spyder calibrator. What Apple has going for it is the PPI density which might only be noticeable in text. For images and photography, back in the day photographers were purposely buying lower resolution (not = lower quality) monitors for photo editing. I did like the ASD at the Apple Store but for those starting out I just want you to be aware there are better ways to invest your money so that you can keep feeding your passion till you make the big bucks.

Yes the glitches are nerve racking. I have a Studio Display at my home desk, but still use an HP Envy and Alienware 34DW in my office for work. It constantly will switch window positions after waking from sleep or pick the wrong resolution on the HP Envy forcing me to disconnect the display again and reconnect, or reboot. It's very disruptive and can happen either when waking from sleep or even when I sit down to work and have just connected everything. I'd really like to ditch the two displays and go for a Studio Display for my work office too.

I'll definitely buy this monitor but I'm torn about the stand, would you say the adjustable stand was worth it? I'm 6'2 but I can just put a few big books under it with the basic stand. I'm also a little concerned the closeness of the monitor, as in I like it when I'm further away from my monitor and it seems to me that the adjustable stand would mean that the screen would be closer. What do you think?
@frostgodx
@frostgodx 8 месяцев назад
the screen is actually further away with the height one not closer as it would appear when you are in a high or lower setting than the middle which you almost certainly will be, its only a very small difference though. The base stand is not even that low its just according to your own setup. You can measure using the measurements apple provides which is what i did to find the ideal height and how close it was to the base stand. My ideal eye sight was about 4" higher than the base stand allows so i priced out risers and such and in the end said screw it i wanted a clean setup so i paid the extra for the height adjustable one and im happy with that for the past 6 months. This video randomly came in my recommended so im here lol.
@frostgodx
@frostgodx 8 месяцев назад
i had the opportunity to try both standard and nano texture in a local store and the nano was kind of strange looking and the sales person also agreed with my findings on it as well as saying it was very difficult to clean so i chose the standard glass and really its not bad at all given how bright it gets it cuts through any reflections i get with windows behind my work space. I should also note i am 7ft tall (literally lol) so i almost certainly needed the height adjustable but i had to make sure@@mbz5152
@DesignedbyKirk
@DesignedbyKirk 7 месяцев назад
That's right, marginally, when you get to the top height, it does move away enough, I have a desk that's 75cm in depth, and I'm 6'3, with the stand, I keep it at a pretty good distance that doesn't cause any srain

Well presented Kirk. Very informative. As much hate as Apple gets, I don't mind whatsoever paying for peace of mind. Paying for quality. Paying for a product that will work seamlessly with all my other Apple products. The argument that you can purchase x amount of other monitors is mute to me. Ultimately, you get what you pay for. As much research as I've done, I always come back to this monitor or the Pro Display XDR. My only reservation is time. I'd leary of getting an apple product, only to be surprised when the next iteration gets announced. Haha. Any idea when Pt. 2 will come out for this monitor or the pro display xdr? The comfortability features certainly are very nice, but at the end of the day, it’s just a 2017 iMac display for the same price, but without the iMac. Comparing the colors to sub $500 displays isn’t exactly apples to apples. Particularly for color grading, I don’t think I could justify the Studio Display, when there are quite a bit higher quality monitors out there for less money. Part of this sounded to me like you were looking for reasons to like it and justify it, honestly. I'm not saying that is the case, it just SOUNDED like that at times. That said, I think the main thing about what makes this display not for most people is not that it's bad, as it certainly isn't, but the price. For people in Apple's ecosystem that can value all the features included, that especially work well with other Apple hardware, this display has a lot of features that add value. If it weren't for the frankly very high price of this display, I think it could be justified for A LOT more people. I think you get an excellent display here, but you pay a premium for it. It's also the best looking and best built display on the market and it's not even close. I can't even find very many other display on the entire market where the housing is made out of metal, and when they are, they are usually butt ugly.
@DesignedbyKirk
@DesignedbyKirk 11 месяцев назад
Fair points, I believe with any review of a pricey item that you watch or read about, that someone has paid for, there is always a chance of unconscionable bias to justify a purchase. I do completely stand behind the 3 reasons I listed, and out of all the things i've purchased this year, I still believe the Studio Display has minimised the most amount of friction with my creative work. Completely agree with all your follow up points too, the price is really just the hard pill to swallow, but... what else is there that properly compares for MacOS users, I think that's where we can more so 'justify' it. Unlike an iMac, there is no computer in the Studio display, meaning I can see myself using this for many years to come, compared to an iMac where I'd probably outgrow the performance in a shorter period of time
