Your comment "a really good Atmos mix folded down sounds better than the stereo master" - I strongly disagree. I've yet to hear at least 3 good examples of that. In fact it's impossible because the foldown is just a stripped-down version of an atmos mix but while when you're mixing in stereo you hear exactly what the end listener will hear 100% of the time while mixing that's why 100% of the time it will sound better. All the panning decisions from Atmos and pan automations won't work on your stereo foldown. If something was moving from the back of the room to the front maybe you'll want it moving from the left to the right 40-50% instead or maybe you'll do some eq automation also there an it will sound miles better than a foldown. Also eq choices won't translate well because when you have separate speakers you won't eq the low mids and lows as much because they're not fighting with the vocal and then in the foldown you'll get crazy frequency conflicts + you can't predict where it will land in the stereo foldown. So it's all a compromise, really big compromise in the quality for a stereo mix + it's much lower in volume (-18 lufs) also so younger people won't be able to crank up their smartphone speakers and show the music to their friends as loud as they would like to. Also how you're supposed to make a proper wide stereo image for stereo if you're hearing something totally different while mixing with multiple speakers? It's all BS. The proper way would be submitting one mix exclusively for Atmos, and one for stereo. Then Atmos is ok. But taking stereo folddown from Atmos and calling it your stereo mix is beyond me
@SyntheticFuture
@SyntheticFuture 25 дней назад
It's like judging 4K image quality on a 720p screen. It just doesn't translate. And since 99.99% of all people in the world aren't using Atmos in any way why bother investing tens of thousands in to mixing for it and making the experience worse for 99.99% of all people. It's such a typical rich people attitude "well it sounds better to me in my highly optimized and specialized environment!". Great. It sounds horrible on my 200 usd headphones. So I don't care about it :x

@Wagaxoxo
@Wagaxoxo 25 дней назад
Guys, either way… you’ll still have the option to listen to music in Atmos or in stereo. Like Colt said, the artists and/or labels still have to sign off on and deliver the stereo master, and when possible he’s using the stereo master as a reference for the Atmos mix/master (which is why he’s saturating and clipping/limiting the stems). Apple Music and Tidal don’t force you to listen in Atmos if you don’t want to, you even have the option to disable Atmos playback completely if you like. So if your device/system isn’t compatible with the format (or even if you just don’t like how it sounds)… then just don’t use it. It’s that simple🤷‍♂️ Remember, Atmos is an additional deliverable to the stereo master. It’s not a replacement.

I have an SSL 4k and 10 pieces of analog gear on my 2bus. Mixes glue together in 5 minutes on this system while the creativity is still fresh. If I go to ATMOS I have to stop using my console and stop using all of my gear on my 2bus, lose all the glue, and spend way too long on a mix while losing all perspective. That's a BIG NO.
@Chaos-Dynamics
@Chaos-Dynamics 25 дней назад
I totally agree with you on that 😎
@joesalyers
@joesalyers 25 дней назад
The trick is 90% of the Atmos mixes will be heard on headphones. So do your normal thing and mix the stereo session and then bounce stems through your 2 bus like CLA does and then open a new session and pan them around and done. You can start with the Apple Airpods Max over ear headphones since they give a good representation of what Atmos does. All of the Atmos mixes I send out for review are listened too on Atmos headphones by the client. But I would venture to say most Atmos mixes by indie artists are being done on this way with headphones. Use this method until you can build up enough stuff to do Atmos mixes the way you want too.
@Chaos-Dynamics
@Chaos-Dynamics 25 дней назад
@@joesalyers Fair enough but I still have the idea that with the -18 Lufs they take away 4 Lufs of the volume of playback devices. How long before the streaming services change to -18 Lufs loudness target ? 😕
@joesalyers
@joesalyers 25 дней назад
@@Chaos-DynamicsI hear what you are saying and its a pain sometimes. All streaming services have 1 thing in common DR9 the LUFs level is all over the place. So even if you hit the target loudness if you have a Dynamic range of say -6 it will be turned down more relative to the LUFS scale. So its not just LUFS alone. Its a LUFS Target with a Dynamic Range of DR9. So Dynamic range is the most important. They look for a dynamic range of DR9 (plugin alliance has a Free BX meter to check Dynamic range) Here is each in LUFS I have a little chart on my desktop as a reference. Spotify is -14, Apple -16, RU-vid Videos & RU-vid Music is -13 in America -15 in the EU, Soundcloud is -12 to -13, Amazon is -13 for music and Deezer is -14 in America -16 in the EU. A good test is checking in Apple Music. If you use an Apple device just use Apple Music to playback your song with Sound Check enabled in the preferences this will give you a good indication of how your mix stacks up against others. Also the Apple Music app if you right click on your song and chose "get info" it will tell you how much it has been turned up or down in relation to the library. This is just a good test to see where a track stacks up . If you are on a PC iTunes has the same feature. All streaming services are a bit different and set to a certain in house level depending on the streaming service. On RU-vid you can see see how much they turn videos down by right clicking on any video and choosing "stats for nerds" Colt's video shows this notice the DRC (Dynamic Range Content) So he was a little hot and got turned down by -0.6 so there are little tricks in every streaming service to see what they so to the audio. Volume / Normalized 100% / DRC (content loudness -0.6dB) I get it I'm not a fan of Atmos at all, it just feels like a really fake reverb with poor early reflections. If I'm not recording a binaural track with multichannel mics why would I want to fake that sound from Mono, Stereo, & Mid/Side files? Binaural tracks are for visual experiences, like nature documentaries where you here the bird chirping in the tree to your left and above your head but that requires bulky microphones that only places like the BBC or National Geographic have anyway. Recording a bird chirping with a Mono SM58 and then using Atmos reverb too pan it up and to the left is counter intuitive to me. Atmos will only really take off when we change the way we track things and we record it with the intention to be Atmos, not this ducktape solution we have now taking 1 or 2 channel audio and turning it into 10 channel audio.
@dakota-sessions
@dakota-sessions 25 дней назад
@@joesalyers That's the plan. The problem is if that becomes the "single file" the stems will not glue-together with the bus compression. i.e., the kick drum level will not push on the other stems, etc. So far it's been best to avoid ATMOS entirely.

Matching the stereo mix?!! 5.1 did not cut through because we couldn't replicate the stereo mix. I doubt it's possible to create a wall of sound of MASSIVE guitars with atmos, because everything is distributed among the speakers therefore, that wall is gone... if that makes sense. Atmos is clearly an Apple push and that's why you need to add an atmos mix to release in their platform. Another thing though... everyone complains about budgets and all of a sudden we need a gazillion of speakers to have "an immersive experience"... That is exactly what every bs corporations say to sell bs... Just my humble opinion. Thanks for your videos.
@ColtCapperrune
@ColtCapperrune 25 дней назад
When I say matching the stereo mix, I don’t mean making it sound identical. I mean, getting the same vibe across. Getting the same textures to exist in both. It’s never going to be the same, but I do think especially if the client wants it, that we should respect the stereo.
@psmusicpro
@psmusicpro 25 дней назад
@@ColtCapperrune I've mixed in 5.1 and to be honest it was a completely different mix. Just the placement by itself will change the vibe. I understand what you say and I respect that but to me Atmos and Stereo are two different beasts. I honestly believe that Atmos mixes need an Atmos approach when recorded. We can watch a film on a TV or on a massive screen at the cinema. The film will be the same but the experience will be completely different. Steven Spielberg once said "I don't make films for TV, I make them for cinema"... I believe we can apply that here, in this particular case. I don't believe Atmos will survive... just MHO... I saw quad, 5.1, 7.1, 5.1 with 2 speakers (Bose idea and what a joke), all went down the drain and why? Because it's all about demand. Apple is working really hard to chuck it down our throats, anyone can see that but... we will see. Once again, thank you for your videos and feedback as well.

I’ve not received one complaint about anything sounding weird, and actually have gotten way more notes about how good they sound. My workflow has been getting the mix 60% done in atmos, the switch over to the fold down and finish the stereo mix, have the stereo fold down mastered as you would anything else, and then finalize the atmos mix with the stereo master informing the final atmos mix. ATMOS for the most part is in the trial phases. Surround sound in movies held strong but with a lot of stuff over complicating something sometimes backfires. Kindle came out and physical books were no longer, now physical books sell more then ever. Streaming music and CDs were supposed to kill Vinyl but Vinyl is selling like crazy. Plugins were supposed to replace hardware...the list goes on. As cool as ATMOS is, if everyone does not get on board (small studios, price, complexity) then it will not survive. I know Colt has a lot invested in this so there is some expected bias to wanting to make it work. And I hope it works out. But like most things that take hold and have longevity they start small and affordable and worth trying. ATMOS on the other hand is the most expensive investment in the recording biz in a long time as everything in your studio changes. I guess time will tell.

[imo] I don't think they feel threatened by indie artists. It's likely innovation for the sake of it and to sell more 'atmos ready' hardware devices. Probably to make way for VR/AR devices in the future. Big studios are taking advantage because they can afford it but I don't think the labels care that much. It's more the tech companies that are pushing the change.

Your comment on the number of devices that can decode Atmos is so important. Once devices that can decode it even if the delivery is down to mono or stereo at a very low cost things will change rapidly. The real barrier of this change is Dolby licensing. With that in mind, maybe the evolution of MPEG-H will enable that future for everyone. Love the channel. Thank you

All I hear are circular arguments 1.end all be all FORMAT -Whats wrong with stereo? 2. It sounds "better" -Quite the opposite, the 1:1 translation from stereo to 2 speakers is obviously superior, its like 101 engineering to avoid unknown variables if possible, like listening from the console vs tape playback "back in the day" was not optimal as the tape was more or less an unknown variable 3. Devices are ATMOS COMPATIBLE -Like saying you can write any book on the program Word, it doesn't say much. It folds down to not being atmos experience anymore (some sort of stereo experience, go back to point 2) 4. Film -Yes, but also, why wouldn't STEREO for music be even more advantageous in most cases. The film audio has atmos to divide up, FX, dialogue, foley, enviroment etc, So GREAT IDEA HAVING MUSIC TAKE UP ALL THE (ATMOS) CHANNELS ALL THE TIME instead of taking up like 2.2 channels (stereo)

Back on the topic: An ATMOS studio rig is in short very expensive and complicated to run, and the sound engineers are the ones carrying the costs of the new format. Shameless people. On the other hand, you have made the investments and have the talent. Potentially you have a lot of clients coming your way. Btw, I love your studio. So spacious, so light, and given the voice recording in your YT films, very tight sounding.

I gotta say because it’s a different environment with a different set of space it has to be handled and treated much different and all I can really say is music is made for stereo. so for atoms you’ll need more then what’s produced in stereo. The main issue is no one is going to have that many speakers as he has in that room. Only a hand full of commercial locations or audio enthusiasts will have that. So it’s a lot of work for a small crowd of people who will listen

We as engineers/composers have to keep it up. I paid my rig off very quickly and busy with many projects in DOLBY ATMOS. I did it right and also got the training in the format. 3 years later still working in all types of formats. Stereo Direct Binaural now is much better and will be improved even more. Atmos it’s hitting hard for sure. Don’t agree with the “3.5 billion Atmos capable sold” story tho. I mean sure maybe there’s some truth in that, but is someone going to actually listen to music on some “Atmos” TV speaker and say “wow great Atmos mix”? In my humble opinion the binaural render needs to be miles better for Atmos to stay, because headphones are the most used devices to listen to music. I myself tried Apple Music’s spatial audio on some AirPods Max’s and can’t say I liked them better than a good stereo mix, they’re not bad, but not better either. Different for sure. I hope this can be improved with time as technology evolves! Love the channel!

Hey Colt, please forgive the long comment, but I might have stumbled across a way you can use your standard mix bus chain for Atmos. So I came across a video the other day of this guy who was talking about the secret sauce that a lot of big-time playback engineers use to master their individual tracks for Ableton Live. Basically it involves getting your stereo master dialed in then printing that file and using it as a muted ghost sidechain to cause the individual master chain elements to react how it would when all the tracks are running through it. Then you can print your individual tracks as if they’ve been processed through the master bus chain, resulting in mastered individual tracks. Not sure if this applies to the Atmos situation, but if you could use the mastered individual elements for the Atmos mix, it might save you a shit ton of time and headache. Apparently this is a well known method amongst pro playback engineers, but I had never heard of it. I may not have explained this super well so here’s a link to the guys video. I think he plays drums and does tracks for Benson Boone. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qppKy5djSrw.htmlsi=kuKrCwBSnN3Lx4br

I like your analogy, but I’d love to make a counter-argument, drawing a parallel to software development. The reason most people don’t bother porting their games to Mac is not that it’s impossible or that Macs aren’t meant for gaming; it’s because it represents only about 0.2% of sales. This requires a lot of custom programming and testing, and that percentage of sales does not justify the investment for these tweaks. Now, relating this to Atmos: while it's great to have one deliverable, increasing the cost of mixing and mastering significantly for just 1-2% of your audience may not be justifiable. People might prefer sticking to stereo to justify the cost, especially small to medium artists. I believe if there's a quick AI button to translate your stereo mix into an acceptable but maybe mediocre 15-speaker situation, it defeats the point of creating Atmos mixes a bit. It just seems like a ton of effort for a really small audience, and that’s not how capitalism works :( I do really like the format btw, just arguing a bit here.

I’m also yet to hear an example of a folded down atmos mix that sounds better than a proper stereo mix. It’s simply not true. But, more than anything: consumers are never, ever going to listen to an atmos mix as it was intended. Kids aren’t sitting in the playground surrounded by 400 speakers. They’re still sharing earbuds. Or more likely playing it out of a phone. It’s actually vastly more important to make a mix that works in mono. Good luck to those of you who’ve invested but I’ll stick to my stereo mixes.

Great question! That is a giant miscommunication in our industry that I wish could get cleared up. “Stems“ refers to groups of instruments, not individual tracks. You would have a drum stem, a base stem, a synthesizer, stem, a key stem, a vocal, stem, etc., but inside of each of those stems could be just a single track, or as many tracks as you’d like to group together. What’s inside a session before you start mixing is tracks, not stems. Hope that helps!

I've heard some great atmos music mixes that I've listened to on the dub stage but at the end of the day, I just don't spend a lot of time listening to music in a fixed position. How can a format be efficiently downscaled from 15 speakers to 2 ... surely there are exacting standards that need to be met for the 'Atmos' standard so how is this then downscaled to stereo is it a case of we just leave out some of the information that not facilitated by Atmos setups and if so then doesn't this subsequently mean that your end format is not optimised for that specific environment?

@@Dystopian84 what is the future then? Stereo? That’s not progress, it’s just being static in that regard, so again there’s no progress. Yet Atmos is a progress in separating sounds as there is more speakers for the sounds to breathe in. When we are out and about we hear sound from all around us. Not just from two sources in front of us. In stereo there’s simply not enough room to fit all the sounds in a song. It’s simple physics, and logical. The vocals in good atmos mix sounds finally better than in stereo, and I can hear the words and understand them easier. It’s a better way to understand music, the intentions and emotions of each musician as it comes across much clearer. So no, I don’t agree with you, but it’s my opinion, and Colts, and PDPs, and other engineers who listened to atmos with an open mind, and made the choice to go that route. Also the algorithm for the stereo headphones is improving constantly. If atmos can also be played on my bluetooth speaker and it sounds way better and clearer than with a normal stereo file, I think it will only get better. It probably will be a standard. For example, if someone would tell you in 60s and 70s that instead of cash, people in the future will mostly use a plastic card that you will be able to withdraw money from a machine, and pay with it in stores, knowing what we know now, wouldn’t you want to have a piece of that pie early on? It’s an opportunity that no one today would shy away from if we could go back in time, but then it was like - what’s the point of a cash machine if I can just bring my own cash from the bank? So simply put be ahead of the competition and times. In my opinion if you are someone who thinks of this as a business and wants to make a living, this is the way to go, as it’s a better way to listen to the music, it’s progress and it can boost your business. Your mileage may vary, as everyone has a different opinion, but I’m not going to diss atmos, just because others are doing it. If I had the money and health to invest in atmos (though arguably you can start with headphones) I would do it like Colt. Makes perfect sense to persist in it. He will definitely get work this way. He can do both stereo and atmos now. He isn’t limited to stereo only. Peace.

@@MichalMikulskiMM There are very very few you tubers who make atmos content and yet the comments on that video are mostly negative . The general public doesn't care at all , most people don't have a proper atmos system so they are more likely to listen to atmos on headphones ... And atmos mixes don't translate very well on headphones ( binaural or stereo fold downs ) stereo remains vastly superior if you don't have a proper system

@@Dystopian84 There is a lot of positive comments, I read them all here, there are many people who just boarded the dissing train and keep liking the negative comments which in turn are more visible, and are shown on top. I just don’t agree with what people are saying, based on my own experience. The algorithm keeps getting better on headphones, and headphones aren’t the only way to listen to content, there are people with systems like mine or better, suited for film, but also good for music. I think saying people don’t care at all is a wrong way to phrase it. There are people which don’t care, but I care about music, and I know there are many people who also care about sound. If someone doesn’t care, why listen to music at all?? Might as well not listen to it at all if someone doesn’t care.

Doesn’t surprise me one bit. There’s no point in having a three-dimensional immersive environment with two dimensional sound.

Still seeing ppl tryin gto push atmos forward OMG... Immersive audio is for video, not for Audio.

you keep talking and talking and talking about atmos but then provide no audio examples of anything. obviously you can't allow us to hear the actual surround mix through youtube, but you have claimed at several points that after stereo fold-down a "good atmos mix" sounds as good or better than a regular stereo mix. you have also claimed that mix elements seem to "fight eachother less" in that situation. if that stuff is at all true then all you have to do is show examples and people won't give you as much pushback. show us actual mix examples or stop yapping

This is a take attempting to convince artists to ONLY have the atmos master. Do away with the stereo all together…because atmos will fold down to whatever format you have. Bad bad bad advice. Atmos mixes at very best sound ‘close’ to the stereo, at worst a phasey, verbed out mess. You CAN NOT fold down multiple, spatialized channels to stereo and expect coherence.

I really love digging into this topic as I think immersive mixing is a great skill to possess these days. There value beyond what is even mentioned in this video. Having said that, and with much well deserved respect, I have to disagree with your premise about the single deliverable. It's not even my opinion, it's a scientific reality that exists like gravity. You CANNOT have a single deliverable (in this case an immersive mix) that is optimized for an immersive setup and a stereo setup in the same way you CANNOT optimize a stereo mix and have it fully mono compatible. If you chase mono too hard when mixing in stereo, you will essentially create a very narrow stereo mix. Most modern mix engineer are trying to get their mixes wider not more narrow, but every time you hit that mono button you lose something. Stereo is only double what mono is, however, when you quadruple what stereo is you're going to lose 4/5 of your content... or you're going to create a crappy immersive mix (and why do immersive to begin with if so). The only way a single deliverable is possible is if a filetype is created that embeds two different master recordings in the same file (one optimized for stereo and the other for immersive). The real art of immersive mixing is not the technical skills but your ability to convince your client to let you do what is necessary to maximize their mix on the immersive platform. At the end of the day you're still relying on immersive to replace stereo like stereo did mono. It might, but they two will never share equal status. Much respect!
