We call them mountain lions even though they aren’t lions. Common names can work that way.

Same applies here in America. Scientifically they aren’t, but go to any random person around the Americas and I would bet this comes to mind. You’d probably have to say “water buffalo” otherwise to make people think the actual ones.

But they are nothing alike. I grew up watching African wildlife documentaries so from an early age I could recognise buffalos

@@ohhimark3691 I agree, they are distinct. Many people aren’t introduced to them tbh. I think most of the wildlife documentaries are watched by biologists, children, and the elderly. Thusly it escapes most people. I think few of the kids who liked dinosaurs or animals necessarily carry it to adulthood or more young kids like cars and sports and what else than one thinks. I didn’t know it at age 7 or 10 but somewhere along the way I had it pointed out and retained it.

@@coastalcoyote Bison used to have a much bigger range. They’re native to the prairie biome, which has shrunk significantly over the last 200 years. Basically their range has gone from most of North America to only small pockets of population segregated across the nation.

Also a cow isnt called a cow, they are cattle. A cow is a female cattle thats given birth. Heifer, female without calf. Steer, castrated male. Bull, non-castrated mature male. A cow is just any female bovid thats had a baby. Theres also over 1000 breeds of domestic cattle and over 140 species in the bovid family. The closest thing related to cattle, bison, and buffalo are caprines and antelopes. Also a longhorn is a breed of cattle, not a different animal.
