I think Kazuya as a characters has a lot of flaws, but also a lot of positive things in him. And to be fair every character in rent a girlfriend is like that. And everyone has different tastes, but for me this series is very entertaining most of the time.

I’m a manga reader. Despite the memes and hate, I still have fun reading this series and enjoy it. Some people say kazuya doesn’t develop but that’s very false. HE DOES DEVELOP, but the thing I don’t like is that the author somehow finds a way to make it seem meaningless/backwards later on. (Hence the complaints about dragged out story). I like kazuya but not the writing choices

I think a main reason of why people dropped this story other than Kazuya being Kazuya. Is the regressions back to the status quo After major arcs in romcoms characters tend to regress from all development they got in arc just to stretch the manga out. But with this manga, it’s really bad, especially when you have an MC like Kazuya.

Kazuya is an interesting character who yes, in this society is realistic, he's societal commentary to a degree. I think him being a simp and a incel are bad traits but his crux is incompetence. Kazuya starts out heart broken, wanting a girlfriend, rents one, lies go to far, and him and Chizaru commit to it, and Kazuya falls for Chizaru. Then he actually gets a girlfriend who actually wants him ( yes she has her own motivations, but everyone has their own selfish motivation in relationships even at a most basic fundamental level) fulfilling his goal in the beginning but doesn't want her, he's trapped loving a girl who in reality outside the romcom would never be interested in him no matter what he did. Make no mistake, him being an incel isnt what makes him a sad character (infact by definition he is freed from being one by ruka and even if she didnt come along, he could do the work to become better and get out of it) but him being trapped loving someone who would probably never love him back on top of his incompetence is what makes him sad. Him never getting out and cant get out of his situation, him throwing all of his cash away on a impossible situation (again out of a rom com, in reality its impossible) is sad.

The problem was never that kazuya was trash it is that even after so so long he hasn’t changed at all even in manga.AND also another reason it’s hated is that the story is stagnant AF 😩

See the issue isn't Kazuya is too comedic its that his actual serious conflicts are watered down in the anime. This manga is about sutbelty like ALOT of subtlety and the anime blitzs through everything at max speed. Just for reference. Season 1 adapts 50 whole chapters and stops just before Kazuya goes to the play. the trim down the small Mami scenes that shows shes more lost and confused than she is vengeful and evil. they trim down small intiment moments between Kazuya and Chizuru that show their dynamic at full play and why Kazuya is such a good guy. the girls all get center focus while Kazuya only shines through comedy and well "BIG" moments. The anime is not bad but it is more so a companion piece rather than the bases for the story. As it often misinterprets and removes a lot of the events. unintentionally making the series seem more generic and messy than it is. I know I started with the anime too. I remember first reading the manga after season 2 and while the translations for the early chapters are not great I had this exact shift mindset towards him despite already liking Kazuya prior because I felt he perfectly represented depression not just "down bad". But in the manga Kazuya wants something real, genuine. He wants to be better, change. He doesn't settle for being forgiven he wants to actually improve and better himself. He's fighting with the social conditioning his friends and family instilled in him and even tho hes stupid silly and horny beyond belief hes always trying to change and improve. And he fucks up over and over but gets back up. He's literally the essence of growth mindset. " you have to be willing to look stupid even idiotic if you ever want to change". I recall reading an interview for season 2 where the director said "this season Kazuya is the main character" and that's why hes so different this time around. Except hes always been the main character alongside Chizuru. Now, like you said, your just seeing the full brunt of his change. Now hes not renting chizuru to improve himself like he said in episode 5. He's doing it to help her. To be selfless. I don't think the comedic element is really the fault of his character. Rather in some ways its what keeps the story light hearted. And when that light heartedness dies. So too does the narrative become serious. It becomes darker more depressing. So yeah just sharing some thoughts since well like you said. the stigma is wildin with this series.

Of course I agree with you, but I think what adds to bring down his character is that he never seems to progress as a character. Yeah he isn’t a good character at the start, is in a bad place, does bad things, etc. But he does have moments when he has a chance to help others and do good, but after he does that… (perhaps to draw out the series or he’s just a bad character) he seems to regress and just does bad decisions and the cycle repeats (lots of good moments then bad moments then good, so it doesn’t feel like he ever “progresses”). I think many may relate with him because of where he’s at at the start. But I think he messes up so often people may not relate so much or as much over time. But that’s just me (and I did drop it so it may have changed).

i will leave all of you the secret key to enjoy rent a girlfriend: there are two ways to read the manga: 1. read everything. 2. omit everything kazuya is thinking/NOT speaking out loud. you will rather quickly figure out that it completely changes him into a "normal" and supportive character. after he falls for chizuru, he never cares about mami ever again. he never had feelings for ruka. he sees sumi as a friend. for him it was always chizuru and chizuru only. and the man is trying his best to get her. sure, he is on the simp side of things in season 1 and 2, but everything after that, when they actually become friends and more, he is a normal dude and has some truely amazing character moments. and a lot of people always seem to forget that kazuya is usually the one who wants to clear up the situation and it is always chizuru who stops him.

As someone who hasnt read the manga and only watched the first season, I agree with you. And I feel what you said, about him being more comedic and over the top compared to the rest of the cast is a pretty big reason why I didnt like him much. But as much as that's true, the real reason I dont feel like continuing the story is the disappointment I'll get by it being drawn out and not moving on I'll continue watching your videos on it in hopes you're able to break that spell and make me actually watch it again. And tho I dont comment often, if ever, great video as always!

I think there are chiefly two types of hate that Kazuya gets. Firstly, from men (most likely young boys), who are upset with him because he's not manly enough or whatever and he doesn't fit their idea of a self-insert that would allow them to experience their power fantasy, which seems to be the only reason a lot of people watch anime in the first place. Secondly, from people who are upset with the stalking incident and every other thing they find perverse or disgusting about him, and often lump all those things together, even though there is a massive difference between, say, his sexual fantasies and his bad acts, like the stalking thing. But Kazuya and RaG have been associated with incels and misogyny, which is less about RaG and more about other things, in my opinion. This line of criticism is also often very performative, people feel the need to condemn anything that's bad without trying to understand the character or the context, without empathy or finding joy in fiction that deals in flawed and complex character but doesn't say that such characters are irredeemable. Kazuya isn't the only character who does shitty things in the story, but he's the easiest target for hate, because he's the protagonist, and because he's male, which arguably makes the shitty things he does, like the stalking, more offensive because of the power imbalance and how it's a real thing that a lot of women have to deal with. Not that men can't also be victims. But like it's been said, while the show treats the stalking as a mistake, it doesn't treat it with the creepy realism of, say, a certain sexual situation in Chainsaw Man. It's also the fact that RaG is so popular, with a title and concept that's offensive to many, that makes it more of a target than a lot of other shonen romances that have similar things in them.

I think Kazuya is a genius character. He makes me want to do everything in my power to be everything he isn't. Loving a fictional character is more respectable than what he does.

Amazing video! As someone who enjoys realistic characters, themes and stories kazuya is a real breath of fresh air from recent anime I’ve watched not being a good person but being a bad person doesn’t mean he is bad like a murderer or causing hell in the world because he actually find the courage to help chizuru and we all know that in our lives we have felt depressed and insecure in some way. I think the author just went a little too far as an individual which absolutely affected the series.

I am going to say it again Kazuya and Mami were not the reason I dropped the series, Ruka was, She is Toxic and she is not helping Kazuya's Insecurities at all, She is walking all over him, Kazuya has a lot of Trauma, His own Family don't respect him, He lets Ruka and Mami bully him and walk all over him, no wonder he doesn't have any Confidence in himself, Surely your Family would show support, but nope they don't, It is revealed in the Manga that they do care, but if they keep this up there may be some emotional damage on him,

No, but you are right in terms of tone. His tone in contrast from everyone else in the story is frustrating to say the least, but his entire personality is self-serving. He only acts when he realizes he could lose something and that is put on prime display when he helps Sumi in the bowling alley. The only time he strays from this is when he breaks Ruka's fall since he just happened to be in such close proximity that his normal human reactions took place. I haven't caught up in the story all the way, but even in the part I am in he is still insecure he constantly looks for ways to creep and he is still lying and taking advantage of these girls. He is genuinely self serving.

If the writers of the show could do list comedy more seriousness the show will get better it's just a show can be a bit unrealistic at times but all in all it is a good show in my opinion

i wouldn't pick up the manga, the manga progresses for a bit but then goes into chapter padding mode for what feels like an eternity, i stopped following the manga after the real infamous, memed up chapter so idk if its stayed the same or if it picks up but id say its not worth it if you're not already invested

i don't think he is bad either, you made the points i saw. how he pushes for everyone else, but is maybe too low self esteem to think about improving himself. he takes the bullet drinking to save chizuru from getting drunk, helps her with acting, and helps her with sumi. chizuru helps him to start to change and grow, but i think he also gives drive to the other characters. sumi sees the selfless acts when they date. cihzuru wants to throw in the acting gig but gets the motivation to continue. i think in a way ruka starts to learn from his rejection and devotion to chizuru so she starts to settle down a bit and stop being as crazy. but in the video you said he still acts flustered, but i feel thats its just because he is becoming friends with chizuru and is increasingly in love with her so he is stuck thinking that he has a chance and he is lucky and that everything is for naught. he tries not to show the feelings to not scare her away but kinda can't help it.

I like how you can stop reading this manga and come back to the recent chapter and its still the same where you left it just different context.

You're mostly right. As a manga reader there is a lot of progress with regards to Kazuya, but Chizuru equally has her own major issues that gets explored later in the manga which isn't really apparent earlier on because you are mainly following the MC still. The character development for Chizuru lacks because there is no development for a long time, you only ever see her as the rental girlfriend who is perfect. But things will happen where she is then forced into development. Kazuya is also relatable to many guys because he does some cringy stuff and as a veteran, I have been there a few times with things I regret and feel embarrassed about.

Takemichi is easily one of the worst main characters I've ever seen. I don't see how we are talking about Rent-A-Girlfriend before Tokyo Revengers. It is apparent throughout the whole series that Kazuya is nothing special. In Tokyo Revengers you'd expect to see some actual growth in the main character. Given his situation and the environment he puts himself in.

I hope by the end of the series, Kazuya doesn't end up with Chizuru. I do hope that he goes through a lot more pain, and transforms into being a man that isn't so weak. Maybe in his late 20s or early 30s and develops a great relationship with a girl who is right for him.
