I’d say congrats for admitting when you’re wrong, but I’ve already come to expect this level of integrity from your channel. It’s hard to think of anyone in the edc community who is putting as much thoughtful consideration into his or her reviews. There’s a place for channels that give you camera views and measurements of every single function. But I come here for condensed bottom-line assessments and I am never disappointed. Edit: Also, the modding content is A+ !

I just got mine today.. just tested it at night. My word.. this is bright and quality the lens and optics have no business being on something this price. The tail cap is squared threads on solid copper. The burst bright mode is so bright it lit up an entire house. I was going to get the i3 t but decided on this instead. Already have the order in for the i3 t now after using the i5t. Amazing EDC flashlight right here. Beats stream light by a good margin.

@@maxlvledc That I would like to see. I don't quite understand how you put a higher voltage 3.7 v battery into the i5R and it gives a lower output than with the 2.4v battery. It must be overloading the circuitry. I bought an i3T Plus as I liked the i3T so I wonder what would happen if you put 2 of the 1044O's into the Plus? Iif they have such a big impact on the i3T it should be doubly amazing with the i3T Plus?

I know this is an old video but i had to add. I own the i3t, the i5r, and the streamlight microstream usb. My favorite is the i5r. Run time is no joke. Im an electrician and I am in the dark most of the time; until i turn the power back on. Average usage for me on the low setting with sometimes using high is as followes. Streamlight is half a day (dont really need high). I3t with a cheap battery 2 days. I5r 9 days and charged it just to charge it. Nice option to run a regular aa if the juice runs out. I5r for the win without hotrodding it. Note to everyone; i try to turn any light off when i dont need it like going outside. The streamlight feels like a toy and the double clip sucks, i had to modify mine to easily clip to my cap. If you just need a lot of light for short periods of time while being small and rechargable this is for you. I3t. Great double clip. Needs to get a stock rechargable version. Good performance for a standard aaa battery. I5r. A little larger. Brighter in stock form (to to the i3t). Balance on a ball cap is good even though its bigger (weight is a bit further back) others are better. The run time is amazing. The biggest perk is the run time. Id get the i5r and get 3 of them.

I'm new to the the flashlights.. but I like the versatility of batteries the i5R can use ! Thats my biggest complaint with Olight.. they pretty much only want you using their batteries in each light, so this is nice. Also.. do you know if the "Fenix LD30" can use a purple label VapeCell 18650 without any damage? The Fenix LD30 has been my main light for months now but I'm expanding my light game.

IDK about the I5r, for $6 cheaper you can get the Sofirn SP10 Pro. It is better in every single way in my opinion. Uses any 14500 battery along with AA batteries plus it's more than twice as bright at 900 lumens and fully reprogrammable. I'm not trying to bash the I5r, I just like helping people see other options in the same form factor and at a similar or cheaper price. It does have a steeper learning curve but I found that once I mastered it (which took about a week) it is very handy and nice being able to change a whole slew of settings right from the flashlight. Great video and I'm always glad to see new content from this channel!

@reveme

And finally it happened: the 2.4v battery left me in the dark without notice. No, that’s really a major fault, it’s impossible to guess the state of charge. It went from 350 lumens to dead in a moment. I’m forced to use the I5R with an eneloop from now on…

I think there is something strange with the Olight 2.4v battery also as I tried it in my Sofirn SP10 and got no output and also tried it in my Lumintop Tool AA and that torch sort of flickered and didn't seem to like it much so I wonder what's going on with that. I also dislike the 12 lumen mode of my i5r 90CRI as it doesn't seem as bright as the 5 lumens from my i3t so again very strange. If you could shed any light on those two mysteries that would be good.
@maxlvledc
@maxlvledc Год назад
It's proprietary and only works in the i5r. You need a 3.6V 14500 for the others.
@geeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzz
@geeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzz Год назад
@@maxlvledc Yes I have 14500s for both of those and was just trying out the 2.4 to see what would happen. Anther strange thing is that my i3t just with a nimh seems also to give out more light than the i5r CRI90 with 2.4v lithium battery so these i5r are definitely a strange beast. Why couldn't Olight just have made a longer running version of the i3t using the larger AA battery. I think that would have been way better than whatever this i5r is supposed to be that they came up with. I guess the i3t Plus is the longer running i3t and I do like that torch especially with a couple of NIZn 1.6v aaa but the i5r is more compact being a lot shorter and I prefer that format. I guess i3t and spare batteries, especially 10440s, is the way to go. I also tried 2x10440 in the i3t Plus (don't think anyone else has) but it seems to be voltage regulated and got stuck on low mode. If I try 1x10440 and 1xnimh then it just comes on as normal with no additional output. The i5r I find is a rather annoying torch compared with the i3t, which apart from run time is surprisingly good and this they could have simply improved with the i5r but well here we are. Could do better Olight and we wanted you to. Who makes the equivalent of a longer running running i3t in short body single battery format using an AA or 14500? Somebody needs to and it isn't Olight.
@craigs7181
@craigs7181 Год назад
I'm pretty sure the reason the Olight 2.4v cell doesn't work in the SP10 Pro is because the low voltage protection for li-ion cells kicks in. The voltage is above the NiMH threshold but below the li-ion cut-off. That's my thoughts on why it doesn't work. I love the SP10 Pro and think it's among the best, if not the best AA/14500 light available. I carry one with me all the time. I changed the pocket clip on all of mine to Olights Baton 3 clip and that made it so much better.

This was a nice video to see honestly, and I think highlights something: You can do better. You have a tendency to form opinions and internal biases before you even have hands on with the product. A simple comparing the back of the boxes of the i5T and i5R would have shown you the substantial performance improvement, something that you said made you like the Baton 3, but you had already made your mind up. This was also shown when you had made up your mind on the Curl and was subsequently surprised how much you liked it. Stop making your mind up before you've actually reviewed the product, you wouldn't have to keep taking back what you say and the weight of your words as a reviewer would increase. If you're going to review something your thoughts should be 'I'm interested in that' and then you actually review it and form informed opinions based on actually handling it. Anyone can have a knee jerk reaction to something online, people tend to watch review videos to see what someone that actually has the product thinks.
@maxlvledc
@maxlvledc 2 года назад
actually this is the only review in which I had something in hand, HAD tested it, but not extensively enough. I'm allowed to give my impressions and observations before I get it in hand. That is not the same thing as saying what IS (which I did in my first I5R, which is why I'm fixing it). In the case of the Curl, its a known quantity, the only thing I wasn't sure of was the pocket clip. I still think it should be $10 cheaper. and without the clip I would have simply said $20 cheaper.

Really, only overly obese people generally have "clip snap" problems. These clips are excellent (for a pocket clip). And if you're turning this model of light on, in your pocket.. you should just stop playing with "big boy" gear, loose some pounds & stick to your cell phone flashlight, that will NEVER accidentally turn on. Of all the Olight models out there.. this i5r has virtually Zero problems with accidentally turning on.
@WilliamsKnifeLife

I've never had an i5T or i5R turn on accidentally & I have slept with them in my cargo pockets & worn them for 24 hours straight. I'm not saying it's impossible, but you have to put at least 5 pounds of force on that switch to turn it on in low mode. I just tested an i5r on a scale. Light comes on momentary at 2.5 pounds & clicks to on at 4 pounds of force directly on the button.

Hi, first of all thanks for your effort in reviewing all these flashlight for us, very appreciated. I've received my i5R yesterday and I'm satisfied. But i want just to point out that every review is a very personal point of view, even when it seems it's just matter of "reading specs", it's more a game of "interpreting numbers". This will be long... Reading specs, you can say "more is better". More runtime, more lumens. More customisability. I've seen the other review where you prefer the Sofirn, with Anduril, and I strongly disagree. I've a Sofirn IF25A and it's an incredible toy, but it's a terrible tool. The UI is too much for real usage, and the driver efficiency is terrible. Same with other AA flashlight you reviewed, so me and you simply have different priority. - for you more lumen is better -> for me more drive efficiency is better. I cannot stand a flashlight that waste energy. Plus, I'll use it mostly under 20 lumens. That's the useful range for me, if I plan to need more, I carry a 18650 light. - for you Anduril is better -> for me a simple UI is much more preferable in real usage... and without memory, please. And starting from low, please :) - I5R new PROPRIETARY battery weights 10gr less than an Eneloop Pro. My I5R weights 60gr with the lithium battery, 70gr with an Eneloop Pro. And it's noticeable. No one seems to point this out. - I5R new PROPRIETARY battery falls short with in one single point, but it's really annoying: it's impossible to guess the state of charge. And once it's depleted... YOU'RE IN THE DARK. It doesn't put a single lumen, it simply refuse to work. This is the single, but HUGE let down of this flashlight. So I'll use it with standard eneloops, even if it weights more, I have less runtime, less lumens (man, I cannot spot a difference between 350 and 300 lumens... it's even difficult to guess if it's putting 300 or 150 lumens most of the time!).. but I'll notice when it starts to be low in charge. And I will have HOURS of 15 lumens light, so I've time to react. Changing the battery, recharging the battery, it depends. With the 14500 lithium I've more runtime... but it will happen for sure to be in the dark when I need it. I don't event know if the 14500 battery has a self drain, probably yes because of the integrated circuit, so I'm not comfortable with leaving a light in a drawer for 3 months not being sure it will work, when with the Eneloop I can leave it in the car for 10 years, if needed. And it will work for sure. So from a practical point of view... I've spent 8€ more just to not having that annoying ramp up in high mode of the I5T :D, and as side effect I've a 14500 backup battery. Thanks for your patience if you've reached me up to this point :D
